Beth tried to use her time at the Prytaneum wisely. She began to learn how to cook. Or, bake, rather. She rather liked the sweeter side of food making, and she found her presence more tolerated when she brought cakes with her. She grew, if not as skilled as Elias, at least proficient, and her results were almost always edible. Furthermore, she took it upon herself to welcome new comers whenever they came to her attention. Whether that meant she bumped into them on the way to the various buildings on the grounds, or having one of her friends mention someone she hadn't met yet, she kept track of them and personally welcomed them to the Prytaneum with a made-from scratch cupcake. Which is why she was knocking on the door of an Ares Chosen, holding a little plate with a top over it. The rose frosting hadn't come out quite right, but she hoped that it was yummy enough to overcome the lackluster presentation. And that this Lukas was a chocolate guy. Bringing food always had possible drawbacks--food allergies and distastes being the big ones--but the way to a man's heart was through his stomach, right?

Unfortunately for Beth's nerves and her own stomach, silence answered her knock and drew out for a full minute and a half. Just as leaving started to seem like a good option, however, a gruff voice came through the door, slightly muffled but not unpleasant or rude. Not necessarily rude, anyway. "Hold up. I'm comin'." Then the door swung open and Beth got an abrupt and rather more revealing eyeful of the newest Ares recruit, object of her cupcake offering. Well over six foot, damp from a shower, and only half dressed. Lukas regarded the pretty, tiny little woman on the other side of his door with momentary bemusement for a moment. His dark eyes took in the expertly done hair and make-up, the stylish clothing, the cute face and curves, and the deer-like surprise in her eyes - all in a swift up and down glance, assessing and appreciating but stopping a few steps short of a leer. A slow, crooked smile tugged up one corner of his mouth until he was smirking faintly at her. Then he crossed his arms over his bare chest and leaned one shoulder into the door frame. "Well, hello." His gaze glanced at the plate in her hands. "Welcome wagon?" he suggested dryly.

Beth tried to keep the flame of optimism alive as a few seconds turned into a minute or more. She shifted her weight from one foot and then the other, eyes darting around for any sign of change from the door, ears straining to hear if someone was moving about the room. Just as she was berating herself for not checking to see if he was even in his assigned abode, she finally heard a response to her knock. She had enough time to affix a smile back to her face before the door opened. To her credit, she was able to keep her eyes from wavering too far down when the man answered the door, despite his lack of dress. She did have to blink a little rapidly in surprise. She thought she had left the days of being surprised by half-dressed men back in college. His glance and smirk made her face warm, but she strictly told herself that there would be no temptation here. She could be disciplined! “I guess you could say that!” She chirped back. “I'm Beth, a Hera Chosen, and it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the Prytaneum!” She paused, clearly not sure where to take her little speech from there. “So, um, welcome!” She held the plate out towards his (bare) chest, bouncing up a bit with the movement. He was quite a bit taller than she was, even with her Louboutin heels.

"For me?" Lukas neatly rescued the plate from her grasp before it could either collide with his chest or bounce the cupcake into disaster from her nervous-seeming motion. Not that he minded her little hop-in-place as it did fascinating things to her anatomy. He grinned a bit wider, though, said nothing about it, and ducked his head. "Thanks. It looks great." Then he took a step back further into his room, not quite decided on which direction he wanted to go with his manners (or lack thereof). "And you're a hell of a lot nicer a welcome than I'm used to. I'm Volkov. Well, Lukas Volkov," he corrected. Military habits and testosterone training died hard. "Ares got me, for better or worse." He chuckled. "Nice to meet you and, if you don't mind a mess, you're welcome to come in while I swallow this cupcake whole."

Beth beamed at his compliment. She had been trying to build her repertoire, attempting more and more complicated recipes. This was her next challenge and she felt heartened by the fact that its recipient didn't mind the imperfect frosting. Of course, the real test was ahead. Her eyebrows raised at the smooth turnover plate, impressed by his physical control. If she had tipped the cupcake off and onto the ground, she probably would have cried, and she wasn't sure that was the kind of first impression she wanted to make. At least now she knew why Briiva's recommendation had come with a frankly alarming amount of eyebrow wiggling. "Oh, thanks! Pleasure to meet you, Lukas. I hope you like chocolate!" She hesitated a moment to consider her response and then followed him into his room. "I've never been in the Ares dorm before, so I was curious." She thought back to the ornate openness of her own patron's dormitory. "This is what it's like, huh?"

"Yep, guess so." Lukas followed her gaze around his new home. He imagined it through her eyes and felt a growing sense of amusement. Beth clearly came from comfort and money; the simple bedframe with its dark blue linens, the strictly utilitarian dresser and bedside table and desk, and the glaring lack of any decorations on the wall aside from a calendar and his great ax probably had her head spinning. He glanced covertly towards his untidy pile of well-worn books tucked away in a box beside his bed, only proof of a human being living there. The overabundance of weaponry outside made his choices seem even more stark. He grinned crookedly, suddenly. "Pretty much like a centerfold spread from Ancient Greek Soldier of Fortune out there, isn't it?" With a gesture, he offered her the chair at his desk. It was basic but he figured she would be more comfortable there than sitting on his rock-hard bed. "Have a seat, hm? What's the Hera dorm like?"

Beth's eyes couldn't help but be hooked by and then widen at the sight of the great axe on the wall. She was still looking at it as Lukas made a quip about a centerfold. "All it needs is the naked warrior with a conveniently placed shield draped across the bed." She then realized that she might have taken things too far, especially since her new acquaintance was only pants-and-underwear (hopefully he was wearing underwear) away from being the subject of her joke. This time her eyes couldn't help but flutter to his bare chest before fluttering away just as quickly. She took the offered chair, automatically smoothing the skirt underneath her as she sat. It wasn't nearly as cushion-y as the one at her desk, but she was grateful all the same. Though walking to the Ares dorm was not the same as walking to, say, the Demeter dorm, it was still hard to do in stilettos. "Oh, um, the Hera dorm is, uh, a lot of marble and peacocks. Lots of pillows and curtains." She tried to think of it not as a denizen who saw its beauty every day, but as a newcomer, still dazed and dazzled. "It's like the inside of every wedding magazine you've ever peeked into." She murmured, small smile stealing across her lips.
