Lilly had an important question to ask Birkita. And it just couldn’t wait. It was about their assignment. Sure, they may attend different classes due to their houses, but that didn’t mean they didn’t get generally the same home work!

Smiling happily to herself, she busted into their room, the door hitting the wall behind with a solid whack. She was quite satisfied with the noise. Her voice didn’t go very loud so any noise she could make otherwise was a thrill. ”Birkita!” she shouted. Well, as loud as her raspy voice would go, which was a normal talking voice for most people.

Her homework involved studying the periodic table and, specifically, the element she was assigned to. It wasn’t too hard. In fact, it was easy and interesting. Her concentration was broken, however, as the door slammed open rather loudly. She jumped and she was sure her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. Proverbially, of course. She didn’t think it was actually possible for that to happen in reality.

Sighing, she leaned back in her chair. Well, there goes her homework for at least the next hour. How did she become friends with this girl again? Birkita honestly couldn’t remember. ”What?” she asked surly.

Lilly grinned, moving quickly over to the chair. Immediately, she looped her arms around Birkita’s shoulders, leaning heavily on her and peering to see what she was working on. On her desk was assignments, pencils, pens, highlighters, textbooks, sticky notes, and erasers. Lilly sighed dramatically. ”You always do such booorring things,” she commented with a sigh before nuzzling her cheek against her friend’s.

”Do you want to help me out with my homework? It’s due later today. I’m supposed to decide what I want to do when I grow up,” she told Birkita with a small frown. ”And I don’t know what to put!”

The girl was so insistent on touch and affection. It drove Birkita crazy. The geist tensed as she felt the arms circle her shoulders. She could put up with this, she could put up with this, she could put up with this. She repeated the mantra in her head.

But when Lilly called her boring and rubbed her cheek against her’s, Birkita decided she couldn’t put up with it any longer. Quickly, she shoved away from the dryad, standing up out of her chair. ”Don’t do that!” she said in a snap, putting some distance. ”Figure it out yourself!” she growled.

Lilly frowned as her friend darted out of the chair, deciding to take her place and sit there instead, straddling it. Her chin landed on the back of it and she pouted up at Birkita, miserable. ”I don’t know what I want to be, Birky,” she mumbled almost inaudibly. ”I need your help… I-It’s more than the grades. I don’t know what I want to focus on.” For once, Lilly was serious, not smiling, not joking.

Her eyes stared forlornly at the floor, her mood wilting even further. She knew she had to grow up eventually. In fact, it was more that expected at her age.

Birkita stared at her friend, unsure what to say. She wasn’t used to the excitable girl being so… well, so depressed. She was uncertain how to react, how to respond. She never had to comfort Lilly before. She didn’t even know how to go about comforting the one person she thought no one in the world could bring down. And so, she stood there, dumbly. Staring. She wanted to leave. But this was her dorm too. And, as much as she hated to admit it, Lilly had grown on her. Just a little bit. So she sighed.

”Only you can know what you want to be when you grow up,” Birkita told her with a roll of her eyes.

Lilly stared at her friend, wishing and hoping that Birkita would be of more help. She didn’t want to grow up, not ever. There was too much to think about. She just wanted to have fun forever, to never stop having fun. But that wasn’t how life worked. And so, she sat there in silence, her eyes moving back to the ground.

She didn’t like this feeling, this feeling of utter hopelessness. She didn’t want to think about it. Btu she needed to focus. She knew she couldn’t be a freshling forever. ”Bir… help me?” she tried again, a bit pitifully.

Lilly was being pathetic. Birkita knew she shouldn’t give in, knew that Lilly was basically reaping what she sowed. If she had paid much attention, she would have an idea. But she hadn’t.

Still, when the plea came out, Birkita knew she wouldn’t be able to hold onto her resolve to remain passive. And so she sighed, looking away with a grumpy frown. Just because she had decided to be somewhat helpful, doesn’t mean she was going to be happy about it. ”Why not work in a museum or something? You like dinosaurs so much… you can study them there and teach others about them,” Birkita supplied lamely.

When Birkita spoke, Lilly was surprised it wasn’t more refusal to help. In fact, what actually came out of the hybrid’s mouth was… something helpful. And thrilling. Lilly’s head whipped up to look at her, eyes wide, mouth dropped. Working at a museum? With dinosaur bones? That would be…. That would be amazing, actually!

Quickly, she spun around in the seat, pulling out paper from the drawer and a pencil. Time to answer the question! She just knew that was what she wanted to be. Her heart felt positively warmed by the idea of Birkita’s insightfulness. The hybrid really was a great friend, despite how she acted. Lilly grinned as her pencil began moving. Lilly was so focused on the paper now, she had completely forgotten about Birkita being there. Whoops. But her pencil was flowing across the paper in a way that had never happened before, it was hard to stop.

Well… it seemed to have motivated Lilly. Birkita’s cheeks warmed when she realized how readily Lilly was to rely on what she said. Or was it because she knew Lilly too much? Regardless, it was embarrassing. Now, standing there awkwardly behind Lilly as the dryad works at the paper, Birkita was at a loss of what to do. She had been doing homework, after all.

Frowning, she sighed. ”I’m going to get us some snacks,” she called out to her friend. Lilly was so focused on the paper, she hadn’t even heard the mention of food. It was… a first. Well. Best to leave her to it. The silence was a bit lonely, however. Shrugging, Birkita stepped out of the room, while she began to ponder what she wanted to do. It was odd, being able to answer Lilly’s. And she had berated her to about her unpreparedness. But… Not even Birkita knew what she wanted to be when she grew older. It left a hollow pit in her stomach. Perhaps it was about that time to start thinking about career options and schooling. It was never too early, as most people said. She was so focused on her own problems regarding her future that Birkita had passed up the vending machines.
