Caroling has been a tradition for years, so it’s really no surprise when you hear a soft chorus from outside. What is a surprise is the fact that it’s three in the morning, and the moment they start singing you feel a chill in the air. It’s a song you’ve heard a hundred times before, but something about this version makes you go cold. If you move to the window, you will find no carolers, but the song is loud enough that you know you should be able to see them. They sing one song, and then there is silence. An eerie chill lingers, and your dreams are haunted by strange voices. You’ll probably never be able to hear that song again without feeling a chill.
Why was she still awake? Delaney sighed and pushed back the covers on her bed careful not to disturb the small animal that was curled up somewhat comfortably on her duvet. Delaney watched Itsuki slumber before padding softly out of her room. She had snuck the feline into her home with her parents none the wiser. The teen shuffled towards the kitchen in order to try to see if a cup of tea would soothe her mind.
As of late, since Itsuki awoke her Delaney had found that her life was now spinning out of control and she wasn't keen on the direction it was taking. Setting the kettle on the counter and plugging the device in Delaney leaned against the counter and propped her elbows on the surface and stared out into the darkness of the living room before the click of the electric kettle startled her. Going about the process of steeping a bag of orange pekoe tea Delaney was startled to hear the faint strains of a song coming through louder with every minute that passed.
Cocking her head to the side the girl checked the clock on the stove and frowned. Her farm was private property. Why had carollers come onto it? And why near three in the morning. Growling softly under her breath Laney paused before determining that the music was coming from the front side of the house. Keeping her footfalls silent the teen edged closer to the music and could start to make out various words. Her brow furrowed. Really ... not even a traditional carol? No these carollers were singing Mariah Carey. Cringing Delaney made her way to the window that was near the door and pulled back the fabric to scowl at the group outside ... only to find that no one was there. Peering around Delaney could not pick out any signs that people had been standing around in a group. And yet as she let the curtains fall back into place and grab her tea she swore with certainty that she could still here the singing continue.
Walking back to her room Delaney's ears were working overtime as she knew the song was still being sung. It sent a chill up her spine even as she placed her cup of tea on her nightstand to bring her duvet up and around her. This was so beyond strange. Even as the thought went through her mind that maybe she should wake Itsuki the music suddenly ceased. Delaney stared at her window waiting for another song to start up but all she heard was the subtle creaking of the farmhouse as it settled in the cooler weather. Shivering softly the teen proceeded to shake of the foreboding sensation that washed through her as she sipped at the tea. It's warmth flooded through her but it could not completely chase the chill that had worked its way deep into her bones.
Tea finished Delaney sat up for about an hour longer before letting her eyes close. She didn't know at the time just how much she would be affected for the rest of the night as she tried to slumber. Her last waking thought was to mention the oddness of the encounter to Itsuki when she woke up.
