Quote:
Your Christmas cookies turned out great for once! There was no burning or dropping of the batter and now you have dozens of cookies just waiting to be eaten or given out as gifts. However, as you leave the cookies to cool and go about your business, the smell of gingerbread seems to follow you, no matter if you made gingerbread cookies or not. A strange feeling as though someone is watching you takes over and from time to time you swear that you can hear a strange little voice saying the same thing over and over. “You can’t catch me”. The feeling passes after a few hours, but it might be best to avoid gingerbread for the rest of the holiday season…just in case.

Okay, so maybe Clementine wasn't exactly a master of the oven - or a master of anything even remotely kitchen-related, even - but she had been sure she could handle one measly, measly little gingerbread-making class, because she was in high school now and she had adult sensibilities. She was too old for Easy-Bake Ovens (that managed to catch on fire, but that part obviously wasn't important, since it totally wasn't her fault at all in any way, shape, or form). She was too old to pretend she was happy with store-bought gingerbread that totally tasted like cardboard.

Okay, maybe that latter one had been for building gingerbread houses, but that didn't mean it was supposed to taste different, right? Right. That was definitely, absolutely, factually how it worked and nobody could convince her otherwise. Clementine was a budding genius of the cooking world and in fifteen years she'd be starring on Cupcake Wars! ...if she could manage to prevent things from burning to a crisp or undercooking or just turning out plain flavourless. That last one she couldn't even blame on the noodles themselves; it was still a mystery how they'd turned out tasting like Generic Food with no particular flavoring at all, though. The mysteries never ceased.

But even with the pairing-up with another, younger girl - Sabrina, according to her nametag - Clementine personally thought it had all gone just fine. Even if Sabrina might have been dampening Clem's latent, untapped genius. Sometimes that was just how the world worked.

"How long do you think they're gonna take to cool," Clem whined to Sabrina, about ten seconds away from starting to cry at the absolute injustice. "We made those cookies and it's not fair there's not an insta-cooling thing you can use on them, right?"

Sabrina had planned on doing this Christmas cooking class with her close friend. Though sadly she had ended up getting caught up at the last minute. She knew she had signed up to go and while it might be kinda lonely she figured she might as well.

While her dad had owned a hotel she had totally wanted to do something to help. and while they did have a chief who was brilliant. She wanted to help. Now she had never been in a kitchen before, and just watching the cooking channel she had to admit she was a little nervous.

As she walked into the class. She noticed she had been paired up with a much older girl - named Clemetine from her nametag. Which was something she hadn't expected, but she looked nice as far as she could tell. They began the class and while the girl didn't talk much. She could tell she was definitely fired up. So she helped and tried to be more helpful than not.

That was when she finally heard her talk, and she responded kindly with a little laugh - "Yeah that would definitely be cool. Maybe someone could invent one on day." She was actually totally serious about that too. Since that would be awesome, the whole staff at her fathers hotel could use something like that. It would making cooking things so much quicker. She thought before continuing.

"Though good news is there is only 1 minute and five seconds left and they are all ours."
She ended with a smile. Before realizing she hadn't introduced herself yet, "Oh and I'm Sabrina by the way." holding out her hand politely. awaiting the reaction of her new cooking partner - well cooking partner for today anyways.

"Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh." Clementine's not-quite-irritation was almost a solid presence in the air around her; sure, she knew how baking worked, but she was of a mind that if you wanted something to bake faster you could probably just increase the heat? Well. She thought she knew how baking worked. Whether she actually did or not wasn't particularly important to her; she was no chemist, and it was undoubtedly chemistry. Probably.

"No, like, I know there's insta-cooling stuff, now that I think about it? Blast freezers or whatever, I dunno. But they're probably super pricy." She frowned, tapping her fingers together. "Or they don't work most of the time, or both? I saw them in a cooking show once but it was Australian, I think, so maybe it's an Australian thing 'cause it's super hot all the time over there." She blew a raspberry at Sabrina, having apparently been distracted from her impending breakdown by the ability to ramble. "And it's on your nametag, 'course I know what your name is. I know lots of things. Except how baking cookies works, I guess."

It was endearing, for a certain value of endearing; as Clementine spoke she twirled one of her pigtails around a finger, absentmindedly, idly.

Sabrina just listened as she spoke. This girl was definitely interesting. She was a little different from everyone else she had met. More head strong and she could already tell she hated to wait. She could wait to tell her best friend about her and her adventure today. All of the sudden the girl started speaking about the insta-dry stuff and she listened even closer.

Wait did she just say there was something like that out there? ...Hmm was there really stuff like that out there? that's amazing. She would definitely have to tell her dad about that. since maybe the kitchen staff could use that to make the guests experience better. After all anything to make the guests experience better.

"Probably would be really expensive. Since it is like the cost of convenience," she said with a nod before laughing at the raspberry, "Oh your right. I guess i'm not used to wearing a name tag." she really wasn't since even on her field trips they never even wore them. but there is always a first for everything.

Then she finally heard it! The ding! Finally the cookies were finished and they could taste there creation. "looks like they're finally done," she said happily as she looked over towards the cookies and then at Clemetine. "would you like to try the first cookie?" she offered kindly.

Clementine set her hands on her hips and nodded triumphantly, clearly feeling validated by Sabrina's statements. "Duh." She moved to take a cookie, grinning, and then - stopped. Scrunched up her nose, a little. "Hey, wait. Do you hear that? Sounds like someone saying 'you can't catch me' or something. They do smell really good, though."

Sabrina watched as she picked up the first cookie. It looked and smelled delicious. She couldn't wait to get her turn to pick one up and take a bite.

That was until she heard a whispering voice say you can't catch me.

She gulped and nodded her head, "Yah I do...but who said that..."

She looked around the class and everyone seemed to be busy with their own projects. The only people near them were her, Clementine, and the cookies.

"you don't think..." she said glancing down at the cookie in Clementine hand, "I mean that's not possible right..."

Clementine squinted pointedly at Sabrina, disbelieving; she thought about her henshin pen, though, tucked away safely in her backpack, and suddenly it seemed at least a little more plausible that they'd accidentally imbued the cookies with some sort of horrible recreation of life. Transformation magic and breathable atmospheres on asteroids were real, who was to say that this wasn't a totally normal thing they'd just never noticed before? It was plausible. Well. Maybe it wasn't plausible, but it was at least possible.

"Uh. I'd like to say it's not possible, but, uh, you remember those giant crazy bats at Halloween? Some really weird stuff happens around here with holidays, and it's been like that for a couple of years, so." She gave the most suspicious glare she could muster to the cookies. "These smell super delicious but I'm not really in the mood anymore? I don't think I am? I'm kind of freaked out right now, honestly."
