Lilly was being tutored again. Sighing heavily into her sleeves, she gave doe eyes to the caretaker, Nuka. Nuka… she’d seen around. He wasn’t an official teacher, just one of the ones in charge of keeping an eye on the freshlings. Which was fine by her. Except, he wanted her to do homework and she hated homework. Pouting, she buried her face into her arms, which were folded on the table.
”I don’t wannnaa,” she whined pitifully under her breath. She was tired of constantly trying to do homework. It sucked. She wanted to have fun, not be indoors all the time. Though, the cold weather did make indoors more appealing…

Birkita rolled her eyes and began unpacking her backpack, pulling out textbook after textbook and, finally, a folder containing all her assigned homework. She got to work neatly setting them up on the table before looking at Nuka expectantly. ”I’m ready to start, even if she isn’t,” she told him with an eye roll towards Lilly.
Sure, they were in different houses but it seemed Lilly insisted on clinging to her like a leech. And so, Birkita had to put up with her. But that didn’t mean her studies needed to fall behind. She was prepared to graduate, with or without Lilly.

Nuka smiled enduringly at the two freshlings, sitting on a chair across from them. He picked up the papers Birkita had set out, scanning them over, before looking towards Lilly. She… still hadn’t unpacked her book bag. Oh boy. Nuka smiled inwardly, reaching over to tap the space in front of the rebellious freshling. ”C’mon Lilly. We should get this done so we can go play,” he urged in a whispered tone, as though this were a secret suggestion and they were bending the rules. Freshlings loved the idea of breaking minor rules. Nuka certainly did. ”So, let’s get this done, alright?” he chirped, tilting his head playfully.

They were going to play afterwards? Lilly gave Nuka a suspicious look, weighing the chances that he would lie to her. Not likely. Nuka didn’t seem the type to lie. He was too nice. ”Alright,” she decided in a whisper after a moment, before looking at her paper. Just looking at it and thinking about it exhausted her. Sighing, she picked up the pencil, ready to start writing.
But, she was yet again distracted. Her foot accidentally kicked at Birkita and she looked up worriedly. ”Are you alright?” she breathed in a mumble, placing down her pencil to grab a candy from her bag. She held it up to the other student in offering as an apology.

Birkita rolled her eyes and began paging through her textbook, reading it. She was ready to completely ignore Lilly in order to focus on her work. Usually, when she came to the library, she was alone. Not today, however.
She was beginning to neatly write down an answer when… something hit her leg. Her pencil slid across the page at the shock, mucking up the pretty work. Birkita gaped at it before turning a deep glare at Lilly. Of course the other freshling had to mess things up! She sneered at the candy that was offered at her before turning her attention back to the paper, ready to erase. ”I don’t want it,” she bit out.

Nuka looked worriedly at Birkita though the worry look slipped into a smile once Lilly offered up a candy as an apology. What a sweet child, willing to share like that! He began fretting again, however, when Birkita refused the candy coldly, wringing his hands. The relationship between these two friends was… rather odd. It unnerved him. Freshlings these days sure had spunk!
”Maybe,” he began, laying a hand on Lilly’s shoulder. ”You should offer up an apology? And promise not to kick again,” Nuka suggested, smiling encouragingly at Lilly before turning that smile to Birkita. It was obvious advice but sometimes, freshlings needed a bit of guidance.

Lilly’s face fell as Birkita refused her offer. She didn’t want it?? Who didn’t want candy?! It was insane. Pouting, she unwrapped the candy and slipped it into her own mouth, sucking on it while she thought. Birkita sure was strange. She didn’t like talking, loved studying, and didn’t want candy. So very strange.
When Nuka placed his hand on her shoulder, Lilly peered up, listening to him thoughtfully before nodding eagerly. Had she not apologized? Whoops. ”I’m sorry for kicking you, Birkita. And I’ll try not to do it again,” she told her friend earnestly, before tilting her head to the side. ”Do you like candy?” she asked bluntly.

Birkita rolled her eyes before favouring her paper over talking with Lilly. She’ll try not to do it again. Sure. And when she did it again, she can just brush it off by saying that she tried not to. Really now, she should just focus on getting her work done and not pay attention to any of those currently at the table with her. It’s not like she needed help from the caretaker. She was at the table first. Lilly just happened to see her and decided to invite herself. With Nuka in tow. Nuka was there to make sure Lilly did her work, not to watch Birkita do it.

Nuka smiled at Lilly complying, combing a hand through her hair once he had pulled back the hood of her onesie. She really was too adorable. Bright eyes looked over to Birkita, expecting a reply. And he waited… and waited… Was she not going to answer Lilly? Nuka’s smile was a bit more unsure, head tilting to the side. Did she… not hear? ”Birkita,” he called her uneasily. ”Lilly said she was sorry. And was wondering if you liked candy?” he tried gently, wanting to nurture communication between the two. Surely Birkita had heard him now. His hand fell down to Lilly’s shoulder.

Lilly grinned toothily up at Nuka over the petting before she picked up her pencil, staring at a question. When Nuka began talking to Birkita, Lilly leaned back, homework once again forgotten. ”It’s okay, Nuka!” she chirped cheerfully in her whispery voice. ”Birkita doesn’t like talkin’ much. She always doesn’t hear what I say. Or at least doesn’t respond.” Lilly nodded to confirm what she just said, grabbing her bag again. Her candy had finally melted. Time for another one. Snaking a hand into the bag, she pulled out another mint, popping it into her mouth and sucking at it contently.

Birkita gave a heavy sigh and placed down her pencil. She counted to ten before looking up at Nuka, a small frown on her child face. ”I don’t like sweets. I’ve told Lilly this. I don’t want to keep saying it,” she explained with a note of tiredness before picking her pencil up. ”I want to work in peace and quiet. I can’t concentrate with you and Lilly chattering constantly,” Birkita went on with a frown, before turning back to her work. She would get it done soon. If she didn’t… well, if she didn’t, her whole schedule would be thrown off.

Nuka’s eyes widened as he listened to the two girls talk. Were they… really friends? He wasn’t so sure. If they were… well, their relationship was certainly weird. They were dormmates, apparently. Not a very common thing, sharing a dorm with someone from another house. But Lilly probably had insisted.
Pulling out a chair next to Lilly, he sat, smiling uncertainly at Birkita. ”What… what do you like to eat, Birkita?” he asked curiously, sure that there had to be something that she’d like. And attempting to draw the young girl into conversation. Perhaps talking about things she liked would help her open up.

Lilly listened curiously. It hadn’t occurred to her to ask what Birkita liked. What an interesting idea.
She took up her pencil again and, instead of beginning to write down answers to the questions that remained (which was all of them), she began doodling crudely drawn dinosaurs, waiting for Birkita to answer the question. What did she like? Lilly knew she didn’t like dinosaurs. She had already tried asking and then tried arguing that dinosaurs were the best things ever. Birkita had disagreed, however. It was the same thing with most things Lilly liked. It just seemed that Birkita was bound to dislike everything that Lilly liked.

Birkita sucked in a deep breath. They weren’t going to give her peace. They wanted to chat and play friend while she was trying to work. She grabbed her bag and began to shove her textbooks and papers back in. Neatly, of course. ”I like being able to do homework in peace,” she muttered, smoothing out a paper and neatly putting it into a folder before adding that to her bag. ”I’m going somewhere else,” she told the two, zipping up her bag. She stood up and gave both of them a peevish glare before turning and walking away, disappearing among the shelves.

Nuka stared as Birkita packed up her bag and left. Just left. Just like that. He blinked before giving Lilly a sidelong look and a hesitant smile. ”Well,” he murmured before petting her hair. ”I suppose it’s just you and me, sweetpea,” he told her decidedly with a grin.
He… was very curious about how the dynamics of their relationship worked. But he was also cautious. He didn’t want Lilly getting hurt one day… or Birkita, considering how unaware Lilly is about social cues. He sighed, before tapping the doodled paper on the table and giving her a sweet smile. ”Come on, L’il. Let’s get this done, yea?” He can worry about their relationship after this, he supposed.
