Safe inside his pod, Kenton Rudolph Polk the Fifth... twitched, just a little. He'd been doing that a lot this past week, lost forks of brain lightning prodding at his comatose state even in the absence of his weapon's call. His fits and starts were no real threat to his overall unconsciousness, but they might have been a little creepy had anyone noticed them. Luckily, nobody had.

He twitched again, though this time the subtle jerk of his fingers was accompanied by several sharp shifts of his eyes beneath their lids: left, right, left. There was another stretch of stillness before they cracked open and he swallowed, tasting fire and ash at the back of his throat. It didn't take long for him to recall what he had done, and though there was no regret in his heart, he was a tad miffed to find he hadn't awoken to a party. Had he known that no one had ever even seen him twitch, he would have been even more disappointed.

After shifting his weight from foot to foot to test the strength of his legs, Kent raised his arm, pushing at the smooth window in front of him. He was awake, barefoot, chilly, and surprisingly tired for someone who had been asleep for weeks. His stomach rumbled. Hungry, too. He took a step out into the world. Now all he needed to do was find the SCP Cafeteria.

Gretchen didn't often find herself on pod duty, though she wasn't entirely sure why. It wascertainly included in her list of available duties, along with any number of patrols or watches, it just seemed as though might have been assigned those things a bit less frequently than her peers. Made her wonder if it had to do with her leg, despite having proven by now that she was more than capable.

Or, perhaps they just needed her in the Death offices more than anywhere else. There was, after all, never a shortage of paperwork to go through.

A point that was made all the more obvious by the small stack of mission reports sitting on the desk beside her, and the look of worn focus she wore as she read through them, dividing them into different piles.

Until an alarm sounded and, with a startled jerk, she sent one of the piles spilling of the desk and onto the floor. "Gosh darn it.". No time to pick them up, however. Gretchen grabbed a clipboard from the other side of the desk and hurried off down the long line of pods, hunting for the source of the alarm.

Someone had apparently woken up.

Someone very tall and thin, with dark hair and a tired, perplexed look on his face. Lips pressing together at the sight of him already stepping out of the pod, Gretchen moved quicker, until she could reach out a steadying hand for his arm. "Easy there, Mister..." Gretchen glanced at the name plate on the pod. "Polk. Jus' take it easy, a'right?"her voice was a sweet southern drawl.

He leaned on her just a little, enough to look appropriately helpless but nowhere near what it would actually take to support him. "Right away, miss," he replied, mirth in his eyes and his soft, scratchy voice. The shape of his mouth remained curiously devoid of the same emotion, lips parting slightly in mild wonder instead. Kent's pale eyes took in every little thing, the nearby pods and the millions upon millions of wires holding his interest for longer than anything else.

"Is this Deus? Has my death been extravagantly faked? I'm looking forward to reading all about it." He did smile then, peering down at her almost impishly. "This is supposed to be terribly official, is it not, with barracks and push-ups and monsters? If that's the case, I should introduce myself properly. Kenton Polk. Kent. Though you could continue calling me 'Polk', if you're so inclined. Very militaristic."

Following his smile he had gone back to looking around, and when he lost track of his equilibrium, he steadied himself on Gretchen's arm, for real this time.

Gretchen blinked at him, honey colored eyes going briefly wide at the question. "My, you've got a better handle on the situation than most do right outta the pod." They usually came out with their memory being a bit fuzzy on the details. Clearing up in the first few weeks. Clarity right out of the pod wasn't unheard of, just a bit, well, rare.

She smiled gently as he leaned on her, straightening up to keep her balance centered over her good foot.

"Makes my job a little easier, I suppose. Saves me having to explain where you are, or see if you remember who you are." She chuckled, grin brightening. "Kenton Polk. I'm Gretchen, and I'll be happy t' answer any questions you might have about the island, or your role on it."

It wasn't as if he was all there. If he had been, Kent would've waltzed this girl around the room in celebration of this new chapter of his life, creepy unconscious audience or no. Parts of his mind were very clear, his agreement with the woman in white particularly sharp. When he made a deal, he didn't forget it. Other bits were decidedly foggier, lit by raging fire and drowned in ragged screams. He wasn't sure he ever wanted to fully remember those.

"I'm glad I sound passably knowledgeable," he said, smiling faintly again, more polite than sincere. "But those few things are all I am sure of, to be honest. My... role is a mystery to me, beyond monster hunting. And I don't know the first thing about how to do that or where to go to get food or a bed or shower. Or... socks. Where do I get socks?" He looked down at his feet, smirking more genuinely as he wiggled his naked toes. His face fell a moment later when he noticed her leg.

"O...oh." Maybe no waltzing after all. Kent shifted to reclaim some of his weight. "Forgive me." He hoped his duties didn't involve losing limbs because he... liked his. "Is that... did that happen here?"

In truth, it was a bit of a relief that Kent seemed aware of how he'd come to be there, and at least the very basics of why. It meant there would be no doubts bred by unawareness. No regrets. Or, she sincerely hoped not, not yet at least. There was plenty of time for things of that nature later.

"Monster hunting is right, though it's not quite that simple." She blinked as he shifted his weight off her, head tilting curiously before she followed his line of sight down to her leg. "Ah. No, that happened when I was thirteen. Bad car accident sent me through the windshield." There wasn't any sadness to her voice when she spoke about it, not any more. She'd had almost half her life to adjust to the loss. "Don't you be worryin' about me, though. I'm jus' fine."

Gretchen looked down at her clipboard, then back up again, smile lingering. "But if you're ready, we can get to answering all those questions, and finding you a pair of socks." The last came with a chuckle.

The fact that she hadn't lost her leg since she'd been here sparked a burst of momentary selfish relief, but that feeling soon shifted into something less certain. Had people lost limbs here in general? Because that was rather exciting, as long as it was happening to someone else. Pushing aside this slightly more morbid reaction, Kenton smiled once more.

"Good to know, and I'm glad you're all right now." He let the silence stretch just past uncomfortable before he added, "Socks, yes. And I'd be grateful for any explanation you could give as to how exactly I'm meant to help."

Hopefully the man had a few pairs of socks in the bag he'd brought along with him upon recruitment. Assuming he had even brought a bag. She hated to think the few clothes he had currently on his person were all he had. But it, if he had a bag, would be waiting for him in the room assigned to him, along with his new coat.

"Did you bring a bag with you?" [i]Oh please say yes.[i/]. Otherwise he'd have to ask the quartermaster for extra clothing. If that was even something the quartermaster handled.

"Well, clothing can wait. First thing you'll need here is your weapon. Z
