Yuuri stared down at the bag in his hand thinking, not for the first time that day, that this was a horrible idea. It wasn’t as though he knew Lauri that well. It wasn’t as though they were friends or anything. They were packmates yes. Aue had helped him with training, had taught him some things about the negaverse, had been generally decent as a person, but that was it.

Oh, and he’d also rescued Yuuri at least once, freeing him from being stuck in a fence in the rain, and also helped patch him up from various injuries not just as Lauri, but as his apparent previous identity as Pasi.

But other than that, it wasn’t as though there was any real ties between them. Packmates was a pretty important thing, but… that didn’t mean Lauri had any desire to be around Yuuri outside of Negaverse stuff, right? Maybe Yuuri was overstepping. Maybe he should just turn around and start heading back to his dorm. He would just drop off what he’d brought and leave because at that moment his heart was pounding away in his chest and he was going to have to sit down for a while to try and calm himself down.

Purposefully, he lifted his hand and knocked much too quietly on the warehouse door. See? No one was home and if there was, no one would hear him.

No. He could do this. It was just Lauri. He’d regretted not reaching out to Pasi after they’d crossed paths just a couple times, and while Yuuri knew Lauri didn’t remember his life as Pasi, he didn’t want to lose this chance to at least show his gratitude for not kicking him out in the rain or dumping him off at the hospital like he easily could have. Pack was important to Lauri, or at least enough for him to show mercy to Yuuri.

Sure, Lauri was… rather intimidating, but he’d never been outright cruel to him. Just… scary.

They would say hello and Yuuri would be on his way. There were finals coming up and he could always spend more time studying. He could maybe even call Adrien to see how he was doing.

So instead of taking a step back to flee, Yuuri bit back the nervousness he had just enough to be able to knock louder… and to also reach over and ring the bell.

There would be a pause between the knocking, the buzzer, and the door clicking unlocked in a manner that said it was being opened automatically rather than by a hand. Indeed, the one that greeted Yuuri wasn't the resident Finn himself, nor his erstwhile ginger feline companion, but rather the striped Mauvian b*****d who seemed to spend a rather inordinate amount of time at the Warehouse himself.

Probably because Lauri had set up beer on tap and allowed the Mauvians to order pizza for themselves as they pleased.

"Heeeeey, Perfect timing. Get in here." Tiberius marched outside, shoved his giant body against the back of Yuuri's legs and began pushing just in case he got some stupid idea about escaping. As much as Tibs enjoyed the human drama of playing with Lemons and his 'pack', he did have other places to be, a Mistress and a job to do for her. There were other things he could be doing - he did like the b*****d though, so he hadn't wanted to just abandon him on this most glorious of anniversaries. Or something.

But the kid was here, so. Now he didn't have to worry! Wouldn't have to worry, as soon as he determined that Yuuri would stay the hell put.

In the kitchen, Metallica could be heard. Nothing else. Blue and white candles were set on the counter-tops. Tiberius kept shoving until Yuuri was in the Warehouse and the door shut behind them. "Aw, it's really sweet of you to drop by, what ever did you bring me, sweet stuff?" Now that Yuuri was inside, he could stop herding him so forcefully and instead make more pleasant feline figures about his captive's ankles in a greeting that mimicked shackles.

"You're gonna stay, right? I mean, you wouldn't just...abandon us...on this important day. You know what day it is, right? That's why you're here, isn't it?"

He would just hand over what he’d brought and leave. It would be fine. He would just do that and it would be done in less than a minute and he wouldn’t have to worry about anything else.

Yuuri swallowed nervously as the door was opened from the inside, but it wasn’t Lauri who greeted him. Instead it was -

“Tiberius??” Yuuri squeaked in surprise and then again as he was suddenly pushed from behind, making him stumble his way into the warehouse. Wait, this wasn’t right. Lauri was supposed to open the door, Yuuri was supposed to give him the bag, and then he was supposed to leave. That was all. He had a bus to catch in, like… thirty minutes. And if he wasn’t by the stop when it showed up, he would have to wait even longer to get back to the dorms.

“Not quite,” he mumbled nervously when asked if he was going to stay. He didn’t have any reason to stay. As for asking him if he knew what day it was, Yuuri just frowned down at the cat, insulted that he would think he’d just show up on a whim with no reason.

Yuuri didn’t work like that. He needed a reason, otherwise he would just… never show up anywhere. Avoiding social interaction was one of his specialties.

He had every intention of trying to shuffle his way back to the door before Lauri noticed, hoping the music from the kitchen was distracting enough that he wouldn’t hear Tiberius talking up a storm.

“I came over unannounced. It would be rude of me to intrude,” Yuuri insisted, trying desperately not to trip over the cat as he wound his way around his legs, but ended up stumbling a bit anyway. “I just… here. You can take this for Lauri, okay?” he offered the bag with the box inside. Maybe if Tiberius was distracted by food...

"Oh, it's fine. Really." Yuuri kept trying to offer him the bag. As though Tiberius had hands with which to take the offering. The Mauvian puffed up and turned so that Yuuri had no choice but to follow him over to the kitchen, "He's upstairs getting a flag or something."

Tiberius sniffed, hopped onto the counter, and then turned so he could stare at Yuuri. "Sweetness, you realize you keep trying to give a cat a bag? I don't have hands you precious little darling." He chuckled and licked one of his paws in a manner that was obviously meant as a not-so-subtle cut in Yuuri's direction, which was pretty much how Tiberius operated when purposefully trolling and/or being a direct d**k at someone.

"So how about you put that cute little gift for your not-boyfriend on the counter and set it out next to these garish goddamn candles and wait for him to come down so you can present that gift properly. It's rude to not at least say hello, y'know." The Mauvian's tone had ceased to be cutting, and was more conversational - even somewhat conspiratorial, as though he and Yuuri were the best of friends and were in on this very large and important secret together.

"Not every day Finland celebrates it's hundredth anniversary of independence, after all." Tiberius was walking a fine line, a very fine line - he didn't want to upset Yuuri enough to leave, but neither did he plan his presence being required either. The Mauvian knew what Lauri had planned for the day and wanted no part of it - the last time he'd hung around, he'd ended up getting nothing done and had required a thorough bath before even attempting to return to Stroud's apartment. He did not want a repeat.

If someone was going to end up in that position, stuck entertaining the Finn? It wasn't going to be Tiberius. Nope. He nominated Yuuri. "Oh, heck. Darn." Tibs glanced at a clock and made his entire body droop despondently, "Yuuri, I hate to do this, but I really gotta run an errand for my Mistress. You know, she's super demanding. I'll be back later, no worries. If you could just keep Lauri company until then? I'd be super grateful!"

"You're the best. Thanks!" Before he could argue, Tiberius ******** zoomed though the kitchen and open floor space over to the 'cat space' and out the special cat door.

Down the stairs came a metered thudding, the sound of one man descending with whatever prize he'd managed. "Found it!" Lauri held a medium sized Finnish flag before him as he came padding barefoot into the kitchen/sitting space; he'd expected to find Tiberius waiting but instead there was a rather...distressed looking Yuuri with a bag.

"Yuuri." The Finn greeted his packmate with slightly more warmth than usual, cheeks slightly pinked. Clearly, he'd been drinking...and perhaps something else already that day. "Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää, Suomi!" He waved the flag a bit, and then tossed it over his shoulder so he could grab a step stool. "I wanted to hang it." Normally, he wouldn't have bothered explaining; he rarely did.

In fact, Lauri's explanations were usually 'it's my house', which applied to just about anything, including his penchant for walking around in nothing but underwear, as he was doing on this fine day.

He squeaked and mumbled any kind of excuse he could think up as he was herded into the kitchen, trying to figure out a way to escape without being horribly rude. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He was just supposed to be there and drop this off and then leave, and now Tiberius was making rude comments like how he’s a cat and Yuuri was frowning at him in distress because Tiberius wasn’t a normal cat and could open a door and knew how to corral humans, apparently.

But before he could even figure out a way to leave, Tiberius was leaving!!! That little-- he was up and leaving Yuuri there on his own with Lauri upstairs or something and he was left standing there holding his bag and --

He could run for it. He could leave right then. But he could already hear footsteps and Lauri was making his way into view in only his underwear and he was smiling and obviously in a good mood and saying his name with that damn accent of his and Yuuri was just standing there like an idiot.

Yuuri frowned at himself, unable to look at Lauri. This was stupid. There was no reason for him to feel nervous around Lauri. There had been plenty of times the other man could have shut him out or told him to get lost, but he hadn’t. Not yet at least.

“Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää, Suomi,” he greeted quietly in return as he shifted from one foot to another, ignoring the way his face was suddenly and stupidly turning red, and instead hoping that he didn’t sound like a complete idiot. Watching YouTube videos on how to properly say something could only get one so far. And he had never attempted Finnish until, well… recently. He’d had no reason to learn before.

“I wasn’t sure if you’d be around. I, uh… got you… this…” he said, still refusing to look at Lauri, especially since he was only wearing his underwear, and instead staring down at the bag he held in his hand. “I was told it was mustikkapiirakka… but I think it might just be blueberry pie… the American version I mean,” he rambled awkwardly, wishing there was a sudden sinkhole that would appear below his feet and swallow him whole. It would be easier to deal with everything that way.

“I mean, I know it’s kind of pretentious of me to… pick some random… thing… that you may or may not like… so… if you don’t like this or… oh… you’re not allergic to blueberries are you? Ah, I didn’t think of that,” he mumbled, visibly deflating the more he spoke.

Maybe it was best if he just… turned around and ran for the door while Lauri was distracted hanging the flag. Tiberius’s favor be damned. Oh, or he could power up and teleport out of there. That was an option too.

Yuuri's pronunciation was quite good - Japanese sounds were pretty close to Finnish in many ways, after all - and Lauri was pleasantly surprised. Whether he would have been sober was a whole other thing, but lubricated by the day's festivities and vices already indulged, he beamed. "Very nice."

He also laughed because...really, where else would he be? But Yuuri was Japanese and wasn't often direct. It required some sort of translation to get to what he was saying. He was as indirect as Lauri tended to be direct, generally. The gift drew his attention, though the Finn moved to turn his music down so that talking - and understanding what was said - was easier.

So when his packmate mentioned one of his absolute favorite dishes, he perked and sidled over with intent. "Yuuuuuriiiiii" Lauri drew the name out as he peered down at the bag, setting the flag that had been on his shoulder down onto the counter instead. "You brought my favorite for Independence day. How did you know? Did that garbage cat tell you?"

He took the parcel and pulled the pie out and set it on the counter, admiring the crust and the way the colourful fruit looked baked. It was very tempting to just poke a finger in as he might have as a child, but he was an Adult, so no. "Too early for pie." Lauri actually sounded...mournful. "Ah, but we should eat something now. You're staying for dinner, of course. To celebrate."

Of course he was. Yuuri had brought the dessert, so naturally he'd be staying. Was it possibly a bad idea to allow the Finn to cook while obviously under the influence of multiple mind altering substances? Yes. Very possibly. Thank ******** he'd already put on the stew in a crock pot the night before.

He didn’t have a chance to run. Lauri was already making his way over to him, smiling and laughing and he was… very clearly intoxicated. Not horribly so, or at least Yuuri didn’t think he was, but it was enough to make him not his normal grouchy self. Not that Yuuri minded that side of Lauri. That side was more predictable. This side was… very much not.

Yuuri made to step back as Lauri reached for the bag, quickly surrendering the offering while staring intensely at the flag Lauri had placed so he wouldn’t do something stupid like stare. He didn’t know if he would ever get used to it. Adrien walked around without clothes on too. Maybe he was the abnormal one.

The mention of the pie being Lauri’s favorite pulled his gaze away from trying to count the threads in the flag and up at Lauri’s face in surprise. Was it really his favorite? He had no idea.

“I… looked it up online,” he admitted rather sheepishly, having not thought to ask Tiberius what Lauri might like, and instead took a wild guess and hoped for the best. “It seemed the easiest to find somewhere, so… --”

Wait, he was being told he was going to stay for dinner?? Yuuri gaped helplessly, because it would be horribly rude to decline the… he supposed it was an offer… but he also didn’t want to intrude. But if Lauri was telling him… and it was an important day. It’s why he brought over the pie, after all.

“Are… are you sure? I wouldn’t want to… cause any problems,” he stammered, his gaze inadvertently drifting downward from Lauri’s face to his bared torso, before immediately slingshotting back up to his face while Yuuri’s ears and neck burned. This was stupid. He needed to stop reacting like this. It was normal and he was making things awkward and there was nothing wrong with Lauri not wearing clothes. Yuuri just didn’t want to be rude for staring like an idiot.

If the Finn noticed Yuuri staring - or anything other than the offered gift at all - it went without commentary, possibly without notice due to Lauri's obviously intoxicated state.

"Mustikkapiirakka," The Finnish word came out like music, like a sigh, like happier times when Lauri wasn't Lauri and could remember perhaps things from childhood that had formed the memories that caused such an intonation to happen at all, "has always been my favorite." He frowned momentarily at the golden crust, thick brows drawn close, "I think." Then laughed again, "Not that I would ******** remember!" It was quite funny to think about it, a whole life that he didn't understand, forming his likes and dislikes, right down to the way he preferred to jerk off!

Fantastical, really.

"Very good guess." Lauri smiled broadly at Yuuri, the words accented heavily, drawn out so the 'very' was more like 'werry' with that 'r' rolled like he'd forgotten where the syllable was going for a moment. Then Lauri turned to get two bowls down from the cupboards, thunking them harder than he meant to because his limbs weren't as easily managed as usual.

"What? It's settled already, I tell you." Was it time to eat? Kind of. The stew was ready anytime though Lauri hadn't planned on eating until later, but Yuuri's pie kind of changed things. He wanted to eat it sooner rather than later, which meant eating stew sooner rather than later. I feel I'm forgetting something... Oh yeah, the flag. "You can serve two bowls, yes? I need to hang this."

Without waiting for an answer when he was pretty sure that Yuuri was competent enough to manage moving food from one container into another without supervision, the Finn picked up his flag and grabbed the ladder that was waiting so he could hang one side and then the other; he only nearly fell three times and toppled the whole thing once, laughing and cursing the whole time because he hadn't locked the damn thing into place and it had gone arseways at the first step.

He would barely even bruise from that!

Yuuri might have been competent enough to move food from one container to another, but he was concerned about Lauri’s current ability to not hurt himself by falling off the ladder. Not that Yuuri was going to say anything about it. Hearing Lauri laugh was strange, but also very nice. And he laughed so freely as well. Yuuri supposed that with inhibitions lowered, since it was clear that the Finn was intoxicated from a day of celebrating, it was no surprise.

And Lauri’s good mood was infectious, alcohol and whatever else induced or not.

Still rather flustered, Yuuri did as requested and ladled out the stew into two bowls. Once that task was completed, he took the necessary steps out of the kitchen to where Lauri was finished hanging up the flag.

Still in just his underwear.

“Tiberius said he would be back later, maybe,” Yuuri decided to inform Lauri, a hint of amusement in his voice now that he had time to calm down and realize that maybe this was okay. With Lauri like this, and with drinking involved, it was almost surprising that Tiberius wouldn’t want to stick around. Maybe there was something Yuuri was missing.

It was difficult not to stare. While it was no secret that Yuuri found Lauri stupidly attractive, as he knew countless others did as well, he knew better than to let it get to his head. Because Lauri was Lauri and Yuuri was, well…

I like how you look, had been said to him before when he was feeling especially unappealing, but the voice in the back of Yuuri’s head reminded him that Lauri, and pretty much everyone in his life, was out of his league.

“Would you like me to put the ladder away so you don’t drop it again?” he asked, a quiet tease, the corners of his lips twitching upwards.

Lauri stepped back to admire his work once the flag had been secured, arms across his chest in a manner that suggested satisfaction. There were reddened splotches along his torso and skinned areas on his legs from his tumble, but the Finn paid no attention to such things - it had flashed pain so briefly to warrant no concern.

"Did he?" News to the Finn. As far as he'd understood, the shitcat had other business to attend to that day, but the inner workings of the benighted Mauvian were not his to contemplate. "Maybe we will be lucky and he will be stuck in dumpster." Eyes the colour of a storm-washed sky went from flag to fieldmouse, narrowing thoughtfully.

Yuuri was smiling, just a hint of curve to mouth suggesting play.

Was he being sassed about his ladder? "It has a taste for blood, like most of my tools." Lauri chuckled and left the ladder where it was in favor of fetching beer. "Instead, get bowls and spoons. We eat." Secure in the knowing that Yuuri would bring food, the brunet moved to the sitting area where he waited expectantly, folding himself up onto the couch cross-legged like a heathen. Both beers were set on the couch beside him, safely resting in the crevasse formed between cushions.

The faintest breath of a laugh escaped in response to Lauri’s hopeful comment about Tiberius. Yuuri was smart enough to keep to himself that he hoped the same, but the thought of Tiberius suffering just a little was, in Yuuri’s opinion, well deserved. The cat was a menace, to put nicely, and Yuuri didn’t trust him farther than he could throw him.

Obediently, Yuuri resigned himself to collecting the bowls and spoons from the kitchen as requested, although he cast a wary glance towards the ladder as he passed by. Once he returned, he did his best to keep his eyes averted from how Lauri was sitting on the couch, feeling his face burn from cheeks to ears to neck as he handed over a bowl and spoon.

“It must be strange to experience things again for the first time,” Yuuri observed, knowing very well that he’d made similar comments before, but it was the first thing that came to mind that might have distracted Lauri from how obviously flustered he was. And it did still surprise him how resilient Lauri was to have forgotten a lifetime, and be able to pick things up as though he hadn’t missed a day, right down to the celebrations of his native country.

Part of him still wondered what he would be like if he had his memories erased. Would he be more confident in himself? Less jumpy for sure. But at the same time, he couldn’t imagine wanting to lose the memories of some of the people he’d met. Everything he’d experienced made him who he was, for better or worse.

Lauri, thankfully, didn’t seem to be too different from Pasi. Yuuri had only crossed paths with Pasi a few times, both as a civilian and as Aue, but Lauri seemed as though he had a little less of the world weighing on his shoulders.

There was another moment of hesitation before he turned to sit on the couch, almost uncomfortably on the edge and against the arm so as to give Lauri all the space he wanted. And this way, Yuuri could focus on keeping the bowl set carefully on his knees instead of paying attention to how Lauri was sitting. And if he just happened to glance in Lauri’s direction, it was only because he was trying to be polite and not look as though he was ignoring him or being ungrateful for the extended invitation to share dinner with him.

“This is good,” Yuuri said quietly as he took a small bite, unsure of what to expect. It seemed as though cooking was one more thing Lauri could do, but Yuuri kept the compulsion to offer additional compliments to himself. Another compulsion was to thank Lauri for letting him stay for dinner, but that was also squashed, knowing Lauri would probably just wave him off or grunt noncommittedly, or both.

Yuuri couldn’t help but try to be polite, since it was all he ever knew, but he also knew that politeness to Lauri wasn’t the same kind of politeness others expected. In that sense, Lauri was less stressful for him to be around, since he didn’t have to worry about offending him by not complimenting and praising every little thing. It was a relief to sit in comfortable silence with him, as much as it was to exchange playful banter.

“Did you leave yourself a cookbook when you left yourself notes of your old life?” Yuuri asked with another glance in Lauri’s still underwear only direction. “How to be Finnish; a memoir,” he half teased.

Tiberus was an indubitably s**t cat. Lauri doubted it was even an exaggeration to say that he was probably the worst that the Mauvian species had on offer, and that was when he was dead-a** sober. When he was more generously lubricated, as he was currently, this status was an absolutely surety.

Regardless of how elegant the Mauvian might have looked, he was genuine, bonafide, grade-A garbage.

Yuuri's supposition that things were strange to experience for the first time again had the Finn nodding his head a little to acknowledge that he'd heard and understood it again this time. "It's....different. Things are vague familiar. I think willingness makes it so." He'd forgotten a great deal, yes, but there were also many aspects of his life that were wispy and ticklish along his memory; familiar to his body and mind in strange ghost-like ways - it didn't always feel like he was doing things 'for the first time again' but more like he was doing something again he hadn't done in ages (even if it was something he'd done yearly as Pasi, such as celebrating Finland's independence).

"Mmph." Lauri accepted the compliment on his culinary skills with ill grace, "Good ingredients. I just toss in pot. Nothing done." Even so, it was pleasant to hear that Yuuri liked it as well; he was picky in many areas that Lauri was not, so even if the Finn liked it, that didn't mean anyone else would eat it.

A cookbook? The Finn snorted and ate a few bites, eyes crinkled up at the corners with amusement. "Joo, that's exactly what I did." Lauri waved his spoon at Yuuri and winked. "More than that too. How to be me."

Yuuri stared at Lauri as the color in his face darkened. It wasn’t so much the wink that made his stomach twist and flutter as it was Lauri’s entire expression, his relaxed demeanor, playful and carefree.

For a moment, Yuuri forgot that he needed to breathe. Once he did remember, he quickly glanced away from the unfairly handsome man next to him, and back down at the bowl resting on his knees.

“And how exactly does one be Lauri Virtainen?” Yuuri asked quietly, swallowing down the nervousness welling in his throat.

No. It wasn’t nervousness or anxiety. He was comfortable around Lauri in a way that he rarely felt around anyone else. No, this was something different. Perhaps it was because Lauri was still only in his underwear and winking at him and being cheerfully intoxicated.

Yuuri noted that his hands weren’t shaking, even as he gripped the bowl and spoon tightly.

“Throwing good ingredients into a pot to make meals. Collecting tools with a taste for blood. Celebrating Finnish holidays. Rescuing damsels in distress,” he listed out, but paused after the last one, frowning as he wondered how many others Lauri had helped in that self-sacrificing way that he did.

Lauri would deny it, but it wasn’t difficult to notice the way Lauri put others’ wellbeing before his own. Yuuri had experienced that twice for himself, as a complete stranger to Lauri, and to Pasi.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 06, 2018 6:25 pm

There he went again, going red. Yuuri's mixed blood did him no favors with hiding the way blood rushed to his cheeks be it by embarrassment, arousal, or fear. Even stoned Lauri knew which option was most likely - Yuuri was s**t for hiding his feelings, despite knowing the sort of thing he plainly dreamed of was entirely out of the question for an aromantic b*****d like the Finn. He preferred to imagine it was a physical thing only, which was much easier to fathom, especially at points like the current one when holding onto deeper thoughts was exceedingly difficult.

"Build things. Drink vodka. ********. Be Finn." He nodded as he spoke, spooning another bite into his mouth and chewing thoughtfully until he was distracted by the delightful flavors and completely missed how engrossed Yuuri was getting in some train of thought or others.

"Being matter of courses celebrating Finnish holidays." Like this one, which was important. "Holidays mean pie." Thus eating, though Yuuri kept pausing in his eating. "You are thinking too much. Today is a day for not-thinking." Was he going to have to get Yuuri stoned again? He was, wasn't he. That was fine, they had an entire pie to split, the stew was done and could be consumed at will, and it wasn't as though Americans celebrated Suomi's Independence...if things got dire take-away was always an option.

Lauri gestured at his packmate with his spoon, expression still unencumbered by the usual stern grump; "You need to relax. I will get you stoned again."

He knew better than this. Knew better than to expect to get and keep everything he wanted, which was why it was so much easier to just shut up and do what he was told. It had worked well for him in his past eighteen years of life. It at least kept him alive. Somehow, no matter how horrible things got, Yuuri wanted to keep living. Even he didn’t understand why sometimes.

Other times, knowing why was as simple as looking at the young man sitting cross-legged on the couch beside him, wearing nothing but his underwear and a relaxed expression that was so rarely seen, despite how endearing Yuuri found Lauri’s typical scowl.

Yuuri knew better than to expect to hold onto moments like these forever, but he also knew he would regret not enjoying them while they lasted.

Lauri’s comment had him pausing again, but for a different reason this time. Instead of dwelling on Lauri’s threats, Yuuri leaned forward to place his bowl on the coffee table. He turned to push Lauri’s spoon held hand to the side as he twisted to kneel halfway onto the couch, and leaned forward to kiss him.

It took almost everything in his power to not think and to also keep himself with his less than stellar core strength from losing his balance and knocking Lauri’s bowl out of his other hand.
