A brown dragon left a young man at Vanaryn’s weyr. He was carrying a baby, the poor thing couldn’t have been more than four months, and it was screaming its displeasure. The young man looked equally distressed. Almost like he wanted to sit down and scream himself; he clearly hadn’t gotten much sleep in the last few months, dark shadows under his eyes showed that.
He knocked at the weyr. “Vannie. please help. I dunno what to do! He’s been screaming like this for a sevenday. I know you don’t want to see me...”
She never did.

Vanaryn looked up when she came to the door, a little surprised to see him since she hadn't gotten a letter saying he'd be by. "Oh. Alright, come in," she said and moved. It wasn't so much that she didn't want to see him, it was more that it was painful to see him. She had made so many mistakes...
Shaking herself a bit, she checked the baby over. "He's got a fever, Jace," she told him and busied herself putting the right herbs and a drop or two of fellis in a bit of sweetened juice. "This should help. You won't be able to go home until he's well. Between is not a good place for sick babies."

Jacepi offered her the fussing baby, looking distressed. "He's sick?" he asked. Good thing they'd flown straight, then. He hadn't been sure how between would affect the infant. He looked at a loss. "I don't want to impose..." he began. He looked a bit awkward.
"I'm sorry, Vannie... I just... He wouldn't stop crying and I panicked. I know how good you are with kids."

She nodded and took the baby, rocking him slowly. "He'll be fine in a few days." Vanaryn offered him a small smile and shrugged a shoulder. "Don't worry about it. I'm glad you thought of me," she said softly.

Little did they know, Jacepi would not be leaving in a few days.
Jacepi nodded, slowly, reassured by his former lover's calmness. He took a breath and looked around. "Jarah, come meet your little brother."

Jarah wandered out of his room and smiled to see his dad. "What little brother? Is mama gonna have another baby?" He had two younger siblings already and wasn't entirely certain how he felt about that.
Vanaryn snorted softly as she continued to bounce the baby in her arms. "No, it's your dad's turn to give you a sibling," she said before sitting on the couch to let Jarah get a look.

“Nah. This one’s premade,” Jacepi promised. He reached out and ruffled Jarah’s hair. “I heard there’s a Hatching soon,” he said. “Are you excited?” He’d only seen one hatching himself, but seeing the baby dragons emerge from their eggs was a wonder everyone ought to experience.
He looked to Vannie and Jacel. The infant seemed much calmer now, and Jace smiled in thanks. “This is Jacel.”

Jarah laughed a little and hugged Jacepi before going to see his new little brother. "Jacel, huh?" he said and peered at the baby. "Yeah! I'm really excited. Mama's finally letting me come see one!" he said with a bright grin.
Vanaryn chuckled softly and shushed him so he didn't wake the baby. "Mmhmm, Sonin and Xibora are jealous. They're too young, still," she said.

Jacepi returned the hug and smiled. “Maybe I’ll stay to watch it with you,” he offered. “You know, I only ever got to see one when I was about your age. I’d like to see another.”

"Can he Mama?" Jarah asked hopefully. He knew they didn't have the best relationship, but he wanted to spend time with his dad while he could. Especially now that he had anew baby brother that would take up more of Jacepi's time.
Vanaryn smiled a little. "It's your dad's choice, Jarah. Jacel likely won't be well enough in time to go home until after the Hatching, so I don't see why not."

“Can I, Vannie?” Jacepi asked, just as hopefully as Jarah. He smiled when she said it was up to him. “Yay!” He put his arms in the air, playfully. He loves spending time with Jarah. It was like being a kid again.
“We can see it together!”

Jarah cheered and then gave his mother a sheepish look when she hushed him again. "Oops. Sorry, Mama," he said, then went to hug his dad again. "I can't wait!"
Vanaryn couldn't help but smile at their enthusiasm. She was glad they got along so well despite the way she and Jacepi often fought.

They didn’t have to wait very long for the hatching to take place. In the early hours of the morning, between sunrise and the still gray darkness, came the warm sounds of dragons humming. It startled Jacepi awake; he’d been dozing in a chair, sleeping infant held to his chest.
“What is it?” He murmured, rubbing his arm over his eyes as if to remove the sleep from them. ...The hatching? At this hour?! “Jarah, get up,” he called. “Vannie!” He called, more softly. He didn’t want to anger the woman, not on hatching day.

Anath rumbled her pleasure, waking her rider gently as she began to hum with the others. Vanaryn mumbled, hearing Jacepi and Jarah moving around. "Already?" she yawned and went to pull her clothes on. "I'm coming!" she called to Jace.
Jarah was up and fully awake, bouncing around as he waited for his parents to be ready. All three of his younger siblings would be taken to the creche before they went to the Hatching. He couldn't wait! "C'mon, hurry, let's go!!"

Jacepi pulled on his pants and tunic, grinning at Jarah’s excitement. He could feel it in him too, he was like a kid again. “Come on, let’s go!” He teased.
The younger three were taken to the crèche, and Jacepi helped Jacel select a spot in the stands. “We’ll be able to see everything from here,” he said. An egg wiggled, and then another. A candidate was knocked to the hot sands by the dragonet that emerged from the first. A mauling? No. Impression,
A blue emerged from the next and seemed to be taking his time. It paced the sands.
