Quote:
You arrive some distance away from the area outlined as potentially having a natural portal, and being to scout things out.

Location:
Roll 1d8 until you gain 10 SP (scouting points) which lead you to the portal area.

1. You notice a group of strange birds. As they fly past, most seem to have two heads. (1 SP)
2. A tree lifts out of the ground, its roots forms two legs as it walks away. (2 SP)
3. There is a flickering in the corner of your eye, as if the channel had briefly been changed on reality. (3 SP)
4. You see your reflection in a mirror. Upon closer inspection you realize there is no mirror, only another you looking back. You blink and they're gone. (3 SP)
5. You find a section of dead grass with odd shaped footprints burned into it. (1 SP)
6. There is something that looks very much like a unicorn in the distance. (2 SP)
7. You feel a sudden, terrible heat, as if lava surround you. (2 SP)
8. Air is suddenly difficult to breath, as if you're very, very high up. (2SP)

You've been given a set of four runic knives to create a barrier around the portal and close it. They must be planted very precisely, one for each of the four cardinal directions. As you plant them, the words to awaken the runes are: borealis (north) australis (south) occidentalis (west) and orientalis (east). When all four are activated, speak the phrase, "A caelo usque ad centrum," in order to finish the process and seal the portal.

Closure:
For each dagger and the closure, the person doing it will need to roll, for a collective 5 rolls.

Roll 2d20

The first die is the prompt you receive. The second die is the damage done to you while your shield comes into contact with the unstable portal.

1-3: You step into the shoes of someone else in your life, either in your past, present, or even future. You are a passive but aware presence in their mind as a memory of your own plays out. You see yourself and your actions through their eyes. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

4-7: You find yourself reliving the worst moment of your life. You are not a passive presence, but an active one. You're able to make things go differently, though the results may not be what you hoped for. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

8-10: You are a future you, a very likely you, and you are dying. You are a passive presence, forced to watch the scene play out but not interfere. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

11-14. You wake up a different you. In the mirror you see changes, small and large, the ones you'd always wanted. The place you wake up in is the sort you'd always dreamed of. The people you wake up to are your ideals, and everything about them is exactly as you'd like them to be. If there was a checklist of everything you'd ever equated to an ideal life, this is it. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

15-18: You wake up a different you. In the mirror you see changes, small and large, and it's as if every single flaw has been increased, made more obvious. The place you wake up in is the sort you'd always feared you'd have to live in. The people there are those who make you miserable, and everything about them is now worse. Like you, every flaw has been exposed and inflated to make existence unbearable. If there was a checklist for your worst living nightmare of existence in general, this is it.

19-20: Wildcard - you can pick any of the above, or create your own vision prompt. When the vision clears, you're able to speak the activation.

The portal seals and there is a sudden air of rightness that exudes the area. Areas that had once housed strange phenomena are back to normal. The air is crisp and clean, and you stand a little taller, as if an oppressive force was no longer weighing you down.

Name: November Nash Flynn

Age: 25

Rank: Beginner Trainee

Promotion Mission Request: Approved.

It was ******** hot.

He stood in the clearing of the small forest with Acheri already summoned, the whip coiled around his feet. Nash wasn't sure he was even supposed to be using it, but he wasn't about to take a chance on an actual mission. And besides that, this was a solo mission he'd been sent on, so if he screwed up, then chances were that his already somewhat disheveled reputation was going to be screwed up.

< Letsssss see if you can actually dooooo ssssomething > Acheri said, slithering through Nash's thoughts. He made a face and felt a wave of heat burst around him, thick and cloying, so hot he was suddenly and painfully out of breath; it felt like his skin was blistering where he stood - which wasn't the center of an active volcano, but sure as hell felt like ******** ******** ********> 2 / 10

The sweltering, overbearing, suffocating heat had died down. Nash trudged onward, wiping sweat from his face and still feeling as though he was about to melt into the ground at any second. It didn't help that all of his clothes now felt sticky against his clammy skin, Nash's long hair pulled back away from his face to keep it off of his neck.

Something flew past him. His head snapped up, immediately alert, and something else flew past a second later in a flurry of wings - and then another, and another, and another. A whole flock of birds, all careening towards the barren treetops.

Not ravens. Not crows. Not...well, not anything Nash was used to seeing. They looked strange, even from a distance, but at least two were sporting multiple beaks and a third multiple heads. It wasn't exactly the most comforting of things to notice.

< notttt unusualllll jusssst sssstrange > Acheri observed.

No, that's pretty ********' unusual, Nash thought back.

Did you see that?

Nash's head swiveled in the direction of the disturbance; he couldn't tell what it was on first glance, his mind not wanting to make sense of whatever it was that was happening. Acheri thrummed in his thoughts, silent for a moment as they both observed.

Something was flickering. Something was warping the air in that corner of the forest, but he couldn't tell what; like a badly tuned television set or a strange radio that kept dipping in and out of focus. Nash's gaze narrowed, his fingers tightening around the whip handle.

What is that?

Silence.

The heat was back.

It was claustrophobic in its intensity, sweeping around Nash like a fist that clenched tight around him. Breathing felt like almost an impossibility; every time he gasped was like shards of glass into his lungs, breathing in hot air and ash and pure, liquid heat.

Keep going. A few more steps.

He was asleep.

He was awake, and he didn't want to be. He was alone, surrounded by nothing but the gaping empty rooms of an abandoned house, forgotten and left behind. He was stuck in a box, forced into words, forced into labels, shoved into this tiny, fruitless, easily forgettable existence. He was trapped here, and there was no escaping, no changing, no fixing it.

No.

No.

He couldn't hear anything.

No one could hear him. No one wanted to hear him.

He was so very alone.

He was not alone.

The house wasn't large, but it didn't need to be. It was just enough space for him, just enough room for the dog and himself and -

- the figure beside him felt real, real, real. He wanted to wrap himself in warmth and security and remind himself that it was allowed, that this was allowed, because he'd never had that before, he'd never really been given the chance for that before.

But now he could.

It was -

....

Nash slammed the dagger down.

"Borealis."

The memory swept over him.

It was warm and safe here. It wasn't so much a memory as it was the recreation of everything he had ever wanted and everything he had never known he'd wanted. Strong arms that wrapped around him, a laughing, teasing voice in his ear. The box, opened, letting him out, letting him walk free, letting him live as he pleased.

He wanted it so badly that his heart felt bruised by the wanting.

His vision wavered. Nash's fingers clutched the dagger; it sank into the earth with a sharp thrust, cold ground meeting his skin as he drove it in deeper, teeth gritted together against the onslaught of emotion that he didn't want to face.

"Australis."

He was not himself.

He was himself, except he was taller, leaner, older. He was October Flynn, brother and occasional friend. October Flynn, neuroscience and engineering major with a mind that worked faster than anyone he had ever known. He was October Flynn, calm and serene on days when the anxiety wasn't so bad that all he wanted to do was sleep.

He was October Flynn, and he was standing in front of his little brother with an arm outstretched.

Don't touch him.

"Occidentalis."

He could barely breathe.

The memory curled around him, twisted through his lungs, overtook his senses. He was October Flynn again, and he was slashing a sword through the air, feeling the hiss of the blade as it careened towards the testing dummy. He was October Flynn, he was November Flynn, he was neither, he was two people in one, and he couldn't breathe -

"Orientalis," Nash gasped, slamming the dagger into the icy ground.

And then he collapsed.

From behind Nash, someone said, "A caelo usque ad centrum."

The barrier daggers lit up, exploding into life. The air, frigid at best, began to calm, relaxing into something much more atmospheric, much calmer and relaxed. It felt breathable now, easy to move, easy to see everything around them.

October sank down next to Nash's limp form, a hand reaching out to press against his shoulder. Gloved fingers moved to brush the hair out of his face, and then curled in the fabric of his coat as October's other hand rummaged beneath his scarf and jacket for his phone.

"Time to go home," he said quietly.
