After a certain point the pain became a constant throb in the pit of Strychnos’ chest. What was once unbearable became a familiar trait. The betrayal of his sister was beloved by the pack who had stolen him away from what he liked to imagine abnormal life might have been like. Still, he could not find it in him to lash out at the last familiar face he recognized from earlier years. ‘Nine has become a painful reminder of how weak he was, and who knew how much longer it would take before the great war hound snapped. For now- to further preserve his sanity, The great fawn colored dire roamed the outskirts of his pack’s territory. He had his excuses all lined up in case a fellow member stumbled upon his drifting path. Scouting for expansion he would tell them. Heavy paw pads left their imprint in soft soil as he walked without a destination in mind. Wandering on autopilot while his busy mind screamed with troubles.

This smell was familiar and welcome. They were also what the female dire sought. There was an ominous feeling in this valley, one that made her fur stand on end, and yet there was also kindness to be found in such a place. Her leg still bothered her, the wound from her fall still evident through her pale fur. He told her to never return, warning her of the dangers that lurked here. Still, she felt the need to return - in fact, she had not left the valley before she turned back. She had tried to shake some sense into herself, fully aware that she did not belong in this place, but it was clear that she failed to do so. She wondered how he would react to her blatant disregard for his caution. Hopefully he did not decide to kill her this time. She bit her lip with the thought.

She soon found the impressions of his paws in the dirt, large and deep unlike her own, small and shallow. He was walking slowly, which worked in her favor for she was not moving as quickly as normal - which was still quicker than your average wolf. Not too long afterward did she find the silhouette of the strapping male. "Strychnos," she called out softly, hoping there was no one else around to hear them.

Oh how right she had been. Such a clever girl who avoided confrontation with the help of her Wiley wit didn’t belong in a crater of death and bloodshed. It seemed compatible to that old human’s tale. The one about the tiny blonde youngster who tumbled down a rabbits hole. Now, while Strychnos was aware that falling down rabbit holes was in no way plausible, he did understand that stories meant for children were a comfort. However, instead of dropping into a brightly colored world where everything seemed backwards the she-wolf fell into a place more comparable to hell. At least through Strychnos’ brazen blue eyes it was such a place. While he may not have recalled much about his previous life before this pack he did sense the ghost of a feeling. A sensation that occasionally pulls a deep sense of overwhelming longing. A happiness that perished long ago. The solidly built hound kept his pace sloth-like yet steady. That is until he was dragged from that faded recollection of happiness and pulled into a state of confusion and focus. Those once lifeless eyes that had been staring straight ahead at nothing in particular as he placed imagines in the back of his mind had transformed into something dark. Something on alert and ready to target any moving thing. With his guard up the dire spun so quickly on his heavy paws that he nearly got whiplash. Immediately, as if set as a defense mechanism the wolf crouched low, looking prepared to lunge with drool dripping canines bared as a threat. He was ready to attack, and yet, when his sights fell on a familiar face his heart stopped. It was the damsel in distress. That stupid little dame who tumbled down the rough side of a cliff. “You,” he practically growled the word out from the pit of his stomach. Such a bellow rumbled in his broad low chest, further adding to the illusion that he was going to attack as he took firm and streaky steps towards the girl. She must have hit her head on that fall from the rocks.

He was less aggressive than he was during their first meeting. Then, he charged at her the second her scent wafted in his direction; now, he simply sauntered towards her. He was still an imposing and intimidating sight, no doubt, but Seika did not see the same kind of intent that burned in his eyes that flared during their first encounter. Something troubled him, something more than her return. "'Nos," she whispered, unfazed by his predatory approach. Perhaps it was unwise of her to allow the distance between them to close, but she did not feel that a malicious heart beat within this dire, despite his appearance. "What troubles you?" she finally asked, head tilting to one side.

Strychnos took his powerful stride with pride, and yet just as he was about to close the remaining ten yards between them she uttered a nickname that sent ice running along his spine. It had enough of an impact that his fur began to bristle and stand erect along the ridge of his back. One might mistake this as aggression if not for the stunned and haunted expression that hung off the muzzle of the stud. He seemed lost in a thought, trapped in a nightmare of sorts, and in one way that was exactly how it was. Strychnos has a flash of very intense visions. Not ones that were solid like memories. No- these seemed almost as though they were a fragmented figment of his imagination. Perhaps they might have been particles of a shattered mind trying to piece back together what he once loved. Nobody in his pack managed to conjure these feelings, but then again nobody called out to him the way this shewolf had. Despite the falter in his steps and that brief moment of being flabbergasted, the dire carried on, his remaining steps lighter than before and far less ominous. “What troubles me is the fact that you’re still here. I thought I had told you to get out,” his tone was harsh and unforgiving, and yet the intention of his words was not to insult. The only reason he was chasing the girl away was because he knew what use she might become to his alpha. He could not picture something so small and fragile undergoing the wrath of such a beastly dire. “Are you hard of hearing, or just plain stupid, girl?”

His body and face told two different tales, one of aggression and another of agony. She could not help but feel a twinge of sadness in her heart for him as he remained in this place where he, too, did not belong. She shook her head, unsatisfied with his answer. "Perhaps that is a part of the reason, but that is not its entirety." She held his gaze firmly, her expression one of genuine concern. A scoff escaped her. "Unfortunately for you, I am neither," she retorted. "But I did not come back to talk about me," she continued, taking a step towards him. "Something is the matter, and I am worried for you. What is it? You can tell me."

Her worry was laughable. Why would such a fair hearted girl ever have reason to worry about a murderer? Surely she caught wind of this place. Perhaps she would connect the dots from possible stories that would be told and the encounter she had with the warhound. However, his actions did go against everything his reputation would pave for her. Strychnos was an exception. Surely, had anybody else stumbled across her path they wouldn’t have batted an eyelash at the thought of sinking their teeth into her throat and painting the grass in crimson. What a fortunate happening she came across the one and only merciful soul in Aeterum. “You? Worried about me? What a stupid thing for that daft kind of yours to come up with, short stack.” He could laugh at her naivety if not for the possible danger she was in just by being a step inside this hellish land. “I believe you lack any common sense, girl. If I were you I would have taken my advice long ago and head for safer grounds. Do you have any clue what they would do to you? What- /he/ might do to you if he learned that you were lingering around? Shoving your nose in places it does no belong. My own troubles are in no way your problem. If you had any ounce of a brain in that empty skull of yours you would have hobbled your way out of this valley.” What cruel words from a wolf who only wished to protect this girl. What else could he be expected to do? Strychnos has no intention of laying a claw on her beautiful coat, and yet he planned on chasing her off with wicked words dripping from a sharp tongue. Even his tone sounded spiteful and harsh. However, in those baby blue eyes was a hint of concern. A longing to see the girl safe and out of reach of any danger.

His words, though intended to harm, slid off her like water on metal. She continued to hold his gaze, patient and undeterred. His sharp speech did not conceal the solicitude apparent in his gaze. She recognized it because it was the same gaze with which she observed him. Once he finished, she sat down, tail curling around her paws. It was an act of defiance to clearly demonstrate that she had no intention of leaving, not now at the very least. She already went through all the trouble of limping back, extremely cautious to not be detected by the other residents of this valley. She was lucky, for it seemed that their numbers were small for the time being, especially considering the one before her did not have the kind of malice in his heart which he seemed to imply festered in the hearts of the remaining members of this pack.

Seika did not speak for a few, lengthy moments after Strychnos finished. "Are you finished?" she finally asked, a small smirk tugging on the ends of her lips. "Like I said, I'm not stupid – quite the contrary, in fact. I was not graced with your immense strength and size, as you can see, so I've had to rely on other talents to make it in this world." She paused to allow her words to linger in the air, and so that her next words would have a greater effect on him.

"I know you're trying to scare me off so I leave and never return to this dreadful place. I appreciate the concern – believe me, I really do, even if my actions seem to say otherwise." She bit her lip, then, trying to find the appropriate words to describe her feelings, brow furrowing with thought. "And yet, I wonder why someone with a golden heart like your own lingers in such a horrible place amidst even more horrible company. I can't shake this confusion, I have. Perhaps concern is a better word..." Her voice trailed off, and she shook her head to clear her mind. As she stated earlier, she did not return to talk about herself.

"Please," she said, eyes finding his once again. "Even one of your mettle cannot carry the weight of the troubles that plague you. I came back to help you just as you helped me. I may not be able to remedy your situation, but the least I could do is give a safe outlet for you to vent. Even if you're not a talker like me, you would be surprised how much good it can do for you." She paused once again, hoping the dire could recognize her sincerity. It was not often she was genuine with others, and the feeling brought her a level of discomfort, one she was willing to endure for his sake. "So please, will you give me a chance?"
