More than a whole year… It had been more than a year since Brioche has begun his search to find the one who needed him most. Again and again he tried to find the person he just knew needed him, whose very soul called out to him in need. Perhaps the person he was looking for didn’t really need him, maybe he was strong and thriving without any intervention… Yet that didn’t stop the need and desire to try to find him.

Ever since that last meeting with Liryn, where such a scent that felt familiar led him to a certain apartment complex, Brioche found himself lingering about there when he wandered about at night. Sometimes the scene there would be strong, always near one door in particular, sometimes it would fade away too quickly and it would feel like it was weeks before the scent came again. Just how he couldn’t manage to find him was discouraging.. What was going wrong?

In that time that had passed, any kittens he had once cared for had grown and no longer needed him, and no more seemed to wish for his care… His nights and days were far more lonely than the old cat had thought this life would be… Even the senshi he had awakened seem to be few and far between these days… And while he could call Liryn, there was a small bit of fear in his heart that his affections for the other would not be enjoyed… For these, and other reasons, Brioche decided to spend his nights stalking the area, hoping that he could find the one he could call his own Senshi.

And on this night, he sat on the front stairs of the door that the senshi’s scent always seemed to waft from… Tonight it was faint, but there, and his fur stood on edge as he waited there on those steps. He was willing to wait all night if he had to.

Quote:
Arian as it happened, didn't power up at the apartment and neither did he power up in general vicinity-

Or at least he tried not to - because he and Orah had a general rule about such things.

Because whilst glamour was a powerful thing - powerful enough to hide civilian identity from even relative and friend - it was also, in some ways, very fragile…

And Arian knew enough, had been around enough, to know that one could never be too careful.

He had headed over to a nearby coffee shop to pick up some hot chocolate for his planned patrol as Athene and it was by chance that he happened to pass back by the apartment on his way over to the nearby park where he planned to henshin up.

It was also chance that he glanced over at the apartment steps and spotted the cat sitting on the top of them and then he had to stop and do a double-take, because the star marked the cat as a mauvian and it was one that certainly wasn’t Liryn.

Quote:
Eyes were felt suddenly on him, causing Brioche to turn his head and wonder just what all that was about. To his surprise, the eyes remained on him and he curiously turned completely to face them, tail swishing lightly against the concrete step. The person didn’t really smell like the scent he was tracing. Actually, he smelled nothing like it at all, smelling more of a faint sweet smell, most likely from the cocoa in his hands.

It wasn’t exactly uncommon that Brioche found eyes on him, after all, he was a mound of fuzzy cuteness and seemed to be much fatter than he really was. To top it all off, he had the poofiest hat one could imagine, so he wasn’t exactly subtle that he was a strange one. Still, most stared and kept walking.

This one, however, had gained his interest as well, and he left the stairs to paddle up to him and look up at him curiously before giving him a soft mrow, just to see what he would do. But first… He smelled Liryn on him and beamed in the best kitty fashion he could.

“Excuse me! Do you, by chance, know the one named Liryn? His scent clings to you.”

Quote:
It seemed his staring had caught the mauvian’s attention as brown eyes shifted from perusing the the apartment steps in favour of staring at him instead for a few moments before the other got to its feet and padded down the stairs and over towards him.

Arian was in the process of freeing a hand from the coffee cup in order to hold it out gently toward the other, because whilst Liryn was fond of scriches and being petted, it didn’t mean that the same would necessarily be true for this mauvian…

And then he found himself blinking when the other mauvian spoke up and asked about said mauvian in question.

"Yes" he said quietly, his voice a little wary as he took in the mauvian who appeared to be beaming at him, because he wasn’t sure just how the other knew Liryn. Adding "I was about to head to the park across the way - want to talk there?"

Because in front of the apartment wasn’t really the best place to speak to a talking cat, even if it was kind of quiet.

Quote:
The moment the hand was offered, Brioche pressed his head against it, immediately letting out a comfortable purr as he rubbed against it. His fur was so poofy and soft, making him to be much fatter than he really was. Perfect for pets, not so great for people who liked to wear black.

Brioche had a problem, and this specific problem was that the ol’ cat talked too much. He was a horrible example of how to keep a low profile, and readily spoke to people when they were on the offer of going to the park, he nodded far too quickly.

“Yes, yes, that would be wonderful, thank you! I’ve not seen him for a while, is he well?” He wasn’t exactly quiet with his words either, walking close and nearly under the feet of Arian as they headed that way.

“He is a sweet cat, yes, he is. He is wonderful in so many things and I can only dream of meeting him again, yes!” For the moment, the original reason why he had come to this doorstop was lost on him. “Oh, yes, you seem very calm right now, yes, not surprised at all for me to be talking. Well, surprised but not VERY surprised, mind you. I take it you are familiar with Liryn then, yes? Are you a senshi as well, my friend? Or perhaps a knight?”

Quote:
Arian couldn't help but smile slightly as the mauvian pressed his head against his free hand, because the other certainly didn't seem to be shy about asking for strokes.

He petted the other gently, noting that the mauvian's fur was as fluffy as it looked, as he waited for an answer to his offer.

It wasn't long in coming and Arian nodded, giving the soft fur a few more strokes before straightening "Yes he is well" he said quietly - and Liryn certainly had been well when he'd seen the small mauvian in the morning...

But it was also Liryn and so who knew what he was getting up to - although Arian was really hoping that it wasn't trouble given that the small tabby bobtail seemed to have a knack for finding it.

Arian had expected the short walk over to be made in silence, but his mauvian companion seemed to be something of a chatterbox.

Miraculously however his luck seemed to hold up as the streets remained deserted, but Arian was very relieved when they were able to slip into the relative privacy of the park.

Still it didn't stop him from looking around to check that the coast was clear before he admitted "You're not the first mauvian I've met" he continued "And I do know Liryn."

It occurred to Arian that he should probably get on with henshining up, before he continued talking - because he didn't really want to keep stretching his luck...

And the last thing he needed was to be caught as Arian talking to a talking cat.

Quote:
The pets and strokes were more than welcome to Brioche, and he purred loudly at them once more before going on his way alongside the other.

“Ah! He is well! That makes me happy, so very happy! Call me a silly ol’ cat, but I find myself worrying for him. So friendly and kind he is, but I still do worry. Though, from what I understand, he’s been awakened much longer than I have. I’ve only been around and assisting for perhaps a year or so. Ah… And in all that time, I still feel lost… but no matter, yes, let's get you powered up!” Once they finally arrived in the park, Brioche quieted down, finding a nice cozy and isolated area where no one would see the other.

Patiently, he sat on his hind legs and waited for the other to power up, though it was nearly painfully obvious he wanted to talk more. After all, this was a senshi who was walking near that door! Near the one that seemed to have his senshi’s scent on it every now and then. Maybe he could have information in regards to where his senshi might be.

What a wonderful night that would be, were that the case! Just the very thought had Brioche swishing his tail faster, eager for more information. But he wouldn’t rush it. Oh no, rushing would lead to irritation, and he wasn’t quite the sort who enjoyed irritating people, even if his ramblings were nonsensical most of the time.

Quote:
Arian found himself blinking at the mauvian's comment, but he had dutifully set down the hot chocolate before withdrawing the bronze and jade henshin pen with the lighter jade wings and taking the opportunity to power up into Athene.

And a part of him couldn't help but feel a bit relieved when the ornate finery of Athene replaced the serviceable jeans and sweater that he had been wearing as Arian - because whilst it was strange for a mauvian to be talking to Arian the civilian, it wasn't so strange for one to be talking to Athene the senshi.

His lips quirked into a rueful smile as he reached down to pick up his cup of hot chocolate and cup the still warm cup in his hands at the mauvian's comment about worrying about Liryn, because truth be told the small mauvian worried him too at times…

Because whilst the tabby bobtail was undeniably brave, he didn't seem to understand that he was just a small cat and Athene had lost count of the number of times that the other had managed to land himself in trouble.

"He didn't mention it however, but instead smiled slightly at the mauvian with him as he said quietly I should probably mention that I am Sailor Athene when like this - but you're welcome to just Athene."

And whilst the flare of his aura would mark him as an eternal, Athene had never been one to stand on rank.

Quote:
“Athene… Athene…” The Mauvian tested the name on his tongue, finding it warm and sweet like honey, and almost a little familiar. Had he heard Liryn mention the name before? Ah, either way, that did not matter. What mattered was that he was powered and willing to talk.

In his excitement for any shred of information he could get, he came closer to Athene, pressing his head affectionately to the other’s ankle. Why was he so warm and cozy? It was familiar, so familiar. The thought passed him again and he just sat down, tapping the grass with a paw to encourage the other to do the same for now. He never was the best at walking and talking when there was far too much on his mind.

Quote:
Athene looked bemused as the mauvian plopped himself down and looked like - for all intents and purposes - as if he was making himself comfortable–

And he was even more bemused when said mauvian patted at the grass with a paw in what appeared to be a clear hint that he wanted him to sit down too...

But it wasn't as if Athene had to hurry off to be somewhere and so he took the hint and sat down on the grass near to the mauvian.

Quote:
“You are a very strong Senshi, i can tell! Look at those wings, very impressive! And such lovely colors, just as Liryn’s are. Are you the one whom he is bonded to?” Brioche looked about around them, wondering if the other Mauvian would be nearby, and really hoped he was. But when there was no sign of his little friend, he just sighed and looked back to Athene.

“Yes, yes, bonded, those that belong with us, who need us, whom we need as well. I’ve been searching for such a long time, Athene, a long time and I keep tracing that scent back here.” He paused, trying to straighten up his thoughts again to make more sense. How he wished he were calmer! Perhaps then he could keep his thoughts in place properly! “That is, someone is mine, someone is here, or was here, that I need to help. I can smell them. I think… Maybe a long time ago, I had met them before, perhaps back during a large battle, and I knew they needed me, but I could not find them, but that scent, it stuck.”

He dipped his head low, his curly ears flattening against his head even more so as they normally did, nearly disappearing into the puffiness of his hat.

“I keep searching, day and day and night too, for this person, but It’s hard. The city is so big, so large, so huge for me to search, and I cannot search always, no, there are others that need me too, but they are here. They linger here, they come here so often and that door I was in front of, they seem to stop there often as well. This entire area is has that scent, but it lingers at that door. I cannot just break in, but I never seem to be able to find them…. So I ask you, Athene… Have you met a senshi around here somewhere? They smell of warm, fresh bread and feel like the warm glow of a gently rolling flame. They are mine to protect and help, but I have not found them..”

Quote:
He nodded at the other's question about whether he was the senshi that Liryn was bonded to "Yes I am" he said.

It had been something that Liryn had been pretty insistent during their first meeting and the small tabby bobtail had spent a lot of time sticking to him like glue.

Although the circumstances of their first meeting may have had something to do with that.

And Athene still hadn't managed to work out how Liryn had managed to keep sneaking into his cousin's apartment - particularly since Saffy's apartment was in a building with a no pets policy.

He listened as the mauvian spoke about searching for his own senshi and a part of him couldn't help but feel a little sorry for him - in part because he sounded so sad and in part because it sounded like the other had been searching for a long time.

At the mauvian's next question however Arian found himself shaking his head "I'm sorry" he said quietly.

"I don't have the benefit of scent like you have, but I haven't come across a senshi like that."

Well Athene didn't think he had.

Quote:
Brioche’s heart sank to his paws when Athene replied to his question, and he could just feel a pained ping in his chest. He honestly, truly thought that his search would be over tonight, that he would find the one who belonged to him and when that proved to be wrong, he was distraught.

“B-but, Athene, dear sweet Athene, they’re here! They’re always here, except only whenever I’m not here but I can tell, they come often!” Without asking permission, he lept up, landing gracefully on Athene’s shoulder and pointed with his paw back at that apartment door.

“They come and linger, they stay there, I can tell, they are fond of that door… Athene, you MUST know something, yes? Who lives beyond that door? Please, I beg of you, tell me!”

His words were frantic, and he desperately pressed his face to Athene’s cheek rubbing and doing his best to try to coax the other into talking. Yet… Brioche knew it wouldn’t be Athene’s fault if there was no information to be had and maybe, just maybe, this was a wasted effort, no matter how much he didn’t want to think that would be the case.

Quote:
Athene wasn’t able to hide the startled look that flitted across his face because he hadn’t been expecting the mauvian to just leap up onto his shoulder like that, although his hand came up belatedly in an attempt to hold the other steady should he need it.

Although the mauvian, and Athene knew that he really ought to find out the other’s name, seemed to be fine - if frantic...

And he couldn’t help but feel sorry for the other, especially as he didn’t have any information for the other - at least not any that could help.

"Well I live there" he admitted in answer to the question about who lived in the apartment. A slight frown of thought flitted across his face as he continued "And so does my flat mate - although I doubt that she’s the person that you’re looking for since she’s the senshi of Orchids..."

And the mauvian had specifically mentioned bread and flame - neither of which really applied.

He sighed as he admitted "And whilst this isn’t my usual patrol ground" because Athene didn’t really have a 'usual' patrol ground "I also haven’t seen anything out of the usual."

Quote:
“Oh… You live there… But you are not mine, not at all… You are sweet and kind but not mine…” He knew very well his person would not smell of flowers, as surely that’s what the Orchid senshi smelled of, and this unique and almost… It was hard to describe what scent Athene had, but it wasn’t his, even if it smelled wonderful.

Brioche visibly slumped, finding his heart hurting more and more and only finding a little comfort in Athene’s touch, his face pressing against the Senshi’s hair and letting out a soft, frustrated sigh.

“I’m so tired of searching, Athene…” He said softly, his voice almost laced with a crying crack. He wouldn’t cry, of course, but he surely felt the exhaustion for searching so long. “I’m not a strong mauvian… I’m tired and old and almost lost… It’s as if this Senshi doesn’t want me… But… “

Pulling his head away slightly, he moved more so that he could look Athene in the eye, curious and imbalanced on the other’s shoulder.

Quote:
A part of Athene couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the mauvian, because his voice sounded so sad, his hand gentle as he reached up to pet the other's floofy fur "I'm sure that that's not the case at all" he said and his quiet voice - whilst firm - was as as gentle as his hand.

"I don't it works quite the same way as it does for you" he said quietly "We don't have scents or anything like that to go by."

Although he did know that the small mauvian that lived with him and Ida had been looking for him for a while before they finally crossed paths - because Liryn had told him as much.

Quote:
“I wonder if they want you… Or perhaps your flat mate? If their scent is there, then… Then maybe they will come back. I know it’s a burden, and I know it may cause trouble and for that, I deeply and truly apologize, but could I bother you to stay for a little while? Just to see if that Senshi returns?”

Quote:
Athene’s cheeks reddened slightly at the mauvian's comment about the source of the scent maybe wanting him, although he shook his head because it seemed unlikely and then he found himself blinking startled at the mauvian’s next request, a part of him not sure that he’d heard right.

"You want to stay with us?" He made it a quiet question.

Quote:
“I do…” Brioche said softly, a little shy in his request now that the hand that pet him gently seemed to soothe his frazzled nerves just a little. “It won’t be for long, I promise… Just… Just for a little while, just to see if that one returns so that I may find them and not feel this pain anymore.”

Again he nuzzled against Arian’s cheek, a soft sad sound coming from him again. “Would you be so kind to do this for an old cat…?”

Quote:
"I don't personally have a problem with it" Athene admitted, "But it’s also not just my decision to make."

Because whilst he couldn’t see either Ida or Liryn having a problem with it, he also knew that any decision made would still affect them. "However I can talk to those I live with to see if they are okay with it..." His voice trailed off as he realised that he still didn’t know this particular mauvian’s name. "I’m sorry I never did catch your name, but would that be acceptable?"

Quote:
For the most brief of moments, Brioche had a little hope that Athene would be able to simply say yes and allow him the honor of staying at that home, just until he found the one who needed him. But it was dashed, and quickly he was discouraged, hopping down from the Senshi’s shoulders.

“I am sorry, so sorry, I am sorry, Athene, it was a foolish request and I am so sorry…” he said softly, pressing his flat face to the ground in a bout of despair. “I won’t bother you with that, no I won’t, I can’t, I shall not, because you are right, it is not your decision alone. I would not, cannot, do not want any sort of problems to arise between you and yours…”

If this cat was nothing else, he was certainly dramatic, even if he meant everything he said in earnest.

“Ah… I am sorry… I was far too caught up in my own little selfish desires that I did not provide you with that… My name is Brioche… And again, I am sorry… I will continue to search on my own as to not bother you, dear Athene…”

Quote:
Athene couldn’t help but look visible startled at the mauvian’s reaction to his counter offer - because whilst his answer hadn’t been a 'yes', it hadn’t been a flat out 'no' either and honestly hadn’t been intended as such either.

"I didn’t say it would be a problem Brioche" he said and his quiet voice was gentle in an attempt to try and calm the fluffy mauvian down - and as far as he was concerned it wasn’t - because he was pretty sure that Ida and Liryn would be okay with the other’s request.
"I just said that it isn’t my decision alone - which is why I’d have to talk to those I live with." He reached out gently with a hand with the intention of giving the mauvian a gentle pat if the other would allow it.

Once done Athene straightened "And the offer is still open, but for now I wouldn’t mind so company on my evening patrol if you’d like to keep me company?"

He made it a question, although regardless of the answer Athene knew that he would have to head out on patrol soon.

But he made another mental note to ask Ida and Liryn about Brioche’s request regardless of the other’s answer - so that at least if the request ever came up then at least next time he would have an answer.
