Toby was not an especially happy kid these days...He'd seen someone die not long ago, powerless to help. It was terrible, and it still filled his mind with dark clouds in quiet moments. Even before he met the talking cat Bernard, and found out he was a senshi, he had resolved to train himself. Run farther, longer, faster, figure out how to fight (he hadn't, yet, but he knew someone he could get in touch with for martial arts classes), and generally be more capable of defending himself and those around him. Now that he was a senshi, that was far more possible to accomplish, of course. To that end, he decided to take advantage of no school for Thanksgiving to combine one of his favorite activities with a new training regimen--He set out on a hike into some woods outside of town, and then once he was fairly sure he was away from everybody, he powered up, and took took to dashing hard and fast, jumping up into trees (whapping into branches most awkwardly fairly often--this was not something he was good at). He was at it for a while, when he felt... something. He didn't know what, all told, he had only the barest of ideas how this whole 'aura' thing worked, but there was something unusual nearby. He had to go see, of course. There was no way anyone in such a brightly colored outfit as Nix could be in any way stealthy, so he didn't really try...though he did advance cautiously. Once he was about as close as he dared, he peered though the trees and spoke, possibly too quietly, "Is...someone there?" he paused. "I know something is over here..." The boy was not in any kind of attacking posture, just...cautiously curious, mostly.

Lurking in the shadows might as well have been one of Caedus’ favorite past times, given how often he seemed to do it. His solitude had given him ample time to perfect his methods, but even now it seemed like he was weak to a Senshi calling out for him. For a moment, nothing seemed to move, and then a strange, hooded figure seemed to part from the darkness just slightly. He stayed in the safety of the trees but had at least made a small effort to make himself locatable. “I find it best to assume someone is always there,” Caedus replied. His voice was quiet and sounded tired, but the oddest part was the faintly metallic echo that reverberated within each word he spoke. It was faint, but distinctive. Once, his voice had been thick with gravel, and while it was still prominent, he at least sounded more human. Or, at least, less alien.“I did not mean to startle you,” he added. “I am usually around these parts.” He did not say he ‘lived’ here; this place was not home to him. It was a source of slight comfort and safety, and it was better than where he had been in the Rift. “I will not be offended if you choose to leave. I understand my presence is not always welcoming.”

Nix couldn't help but let out a strangled yelp in surprise. He took a few deep breaths, though. The hooded figure didn't threaten him or anything, so that was good. Once he had a moment to recollect himself, he said, "Well...I guess that's good advice. Always something around, right?" He laughed nervously at that. He considered a moment, and remembered something he'd read in all the information on the senshi phone. "Wait, are you that alien guy? Uhmm...Kale? No, Caedus!" He grinned. "I've never actually met an alien!" He paused. "Wait, I guess the talking cats are aliens, aren't they...?" A shrug, then. "Oh well! Uhm...anyway. Sorry, did I intrude? The forest is really a great place to hang out, and just, you know, take in nature." He smiled wistfully. "I love it. So many different things here like, oh!" He looked to the side, quite a moment, possibly realizing he was rambling a bit, but pressed on anyway. He collected a small green tree frog off his collar and said cheerfully, "Ran into this little guy on a tree a few minutes ago! I guess I'm kind of his senshi...frogs are cool, aren't they?" He held out an open hand toward the hooded figure, with a little frog almost matching his glove moving slowly upon it.

For a moment, Caedus was quiet. It wasn’t a hostile or unpleasant silence, but he seemed to be taking a moment to contemplate Nix’s words. “You are not intruding,” he said slowly, as if it were necessary to reassure Nix that he held no claim to the forest. Still, he seemed entranced by the creature the Senshi presented, and he stooped forward a little more to examine it. “Senshi of Frogs?” he prompted. “I suppose they are interesting. But then, all of Earth’s creatures are. How do you get him to stay so still?” He craned his head just slightly, keen on keeping his hood drawn but too impressed with the docility of the frog to miss out on the opportunity to examine it.

Nix was quite pleased he had the...what would he call Caedus? the alien? Seemed a bit off to say, but, details, right? Anyway, had him so intrigued by the little frog. "Ah, well," he started, considering. How it was so docile wasn't actually something he'd considered too carefully. "Well, uh, it's a tree frog, right? So it climbs on stuff. And I'm not being threatening to it. I picked up this little guy real carefully. Probably helps that I'm a bit warmer than the trees, and my gloves kind of feel like a frog." The frog was moving around on his hand, and he adjusted his hand some now and then, or let it crawl to the other hand so it wouldn't hop off. Still, he extended his hand, frog on his fingers, out to Caedus. "Here, see, if you move slowly, he'll probably stay on you for a while, too!"

For a moment, Caedus simply observed the creature. Then, he drew away slightly, and announced, “No.” The refusal wasn’t harsh, but it was reserved. He paused, and it seemed as though he wasn’t going to expand on the declination. And then, suddenly, he changed his mind. “I am not a welcoming host, I am afraid. I have had my time with strange creatures. Forgive me for my discrimination. I am colder than you, and have no welcoming gloves. I would be uncomfortable for him. And I think I may scare him away.” His eyes drifted from the Senshi and the frog as he skimmed the area around them. Always, he seemed on edge. “I welcome what company I have. I would hate to offend your friend. Besides,” he gestured to his rags. “I have many places for him to get lost. It would be most inconvenient if he were to find himself lost upon me. But I thank you for the offer. I would pefer to watch him where he is, thank you.”

Nix was briefly disappointed by the denial, but he nodded his understanding. It didn’t take more than a moment for him to get over it, and he let the little frog off his hand and onto a nearby tree branch, where there was enough sunlight to make it a pleasantly warm spot. “Yeah,” he agreed with a little nod, “guess that wouldn’t be fun for anybody to have smooshed frog guts caught up in your uh, cloak thing.” He glanced around a moment before asking, “Is your only company the forest?” He rubbed his chin. “Guess it could be worse—I like hiking through the woods a lot, it’s nice to just be in the quiet to watch and listen but…all the time? Gosh, that might be tough. Dunno if I could handle being out here all alone with nothing to do all the time.”

Caedus seemed temporarily distracted while he imagined the inconvenience of a crushed frog lost somewhere within his clothes. His eyes seemed faraway for a moment and he hummed thoughtfully before he managed to draw himself back to a more present train of thought. “My company is the forest,” he confirmed, “But also everyone who comes to visit me. I am not alone so very often anymore. Sometimes I am brought presents. Food, crystals. Energy. And good conversation. All of which I appreciate. But I am alone sometimes. Here, I do not mind. I move frequently. I do not like to be in the same spot for long. Trapped in the Rift for so long has left me anxious. I am trapped on Earth still, but I have room to wander. I like to watch.” His sentences were short; Earth may not have been his native language, but in the time he’d spent here he seemed to become a bit more comfortable speaking it. When he stumbled upon a topic he was passionate about he seemed to either speak endlessly or in quick, short sentences. Now, he seemed like he had found a topic he could talk easily about. “The Earth is a fascinating place. You have changed so much since my first visit here. I like the sounds of the city. I wish I could see it closer but I know it is too dangerous. My forest is safe for me. I am fond if it. I am beginning to know it very well.”

“You were here, uhm…like a millennia ago, right?” Nix asked, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. “I guess things probably weren’t how I think they were, you know, given this stuff,” he gestured vaguely to his own outfit, “But…yeah, that’s a long time. This place was probably all woods then.” He considered a moment, then added, “But if you wanted to see the city closer, you could watch some videos of it—or other cities. Or just look at pictures, like, uh…” Nix paused a moment and reached down as if into a bag and pulled out a completely mundane smart phone. After activating it, he said to it, “Downtown Destiny City.” After waiting a moment, he tapped the screen, then presented what was probably one of those glamor shots to make the place look as nice as possible. Light, puffy clouds, just the right amount of light reflecting off buildings, cars in the streets…the whole deal. “A little sliver reception is just enough!” He would happily spend a while showing different pictures and clips…if the alien wanted to see, of course. Would require the occasional putting the phone in different spots in the air to get reception, but that was okay, far as he was concerned. The Space Cauldron I figure if he's receptive to looking at the little phone there's no real reason to actually go into detail of what they look at...and if he's not, well, works anyway!

When Nix produced the phone, Caedus’ eyes were immediately fixated on it. It wasn’t the first phone he had seen, but he was so impressed with their capabilities that every time felt like the first. He was excited, eager to see what Nix had to show. He leaned in close, either oblivious or uncaring that the light from the phone was enough to illuminate his features from beneath his cloak. His skin looked an even more eerie blue when met with the glow of the phone, and his eyes seemed to glisten with more fervor as they danced across the screen, eagerly devouring every image he could find. “I do not remember a ‘Destiny City’ when I first arrived on Earth,” he confessed enamored with everything. The technology, the architecture, the art; everything was so vast and impressive and different and he couldn’t help but stare. “I remember the Capital City. I remember the castle we were to meet in. The castle we met Beryl in.” His tone soured when he said her name, and his lips pursed together shortly afterwards as if he had some foul taste in his mouth. “Perhaps there are relics of her castle here. Or, perhaps they are elsewhere. I do not know how the Rift lines up with Earth.” He cared only that he had escaped it. “All worlds are not like this, though,” he said after a moment, almost sadly. “It is a shame that so many worlds out there have been stripped of life. Earth is fortunate to be spared, especially with such Chaos plaguing it. What of your world? Was it spared, or has it fallen?” Fallen, like so many others. His voice seemed strangely sad when he asked, as though he truly cared about it.

Nix couldn't help but notice the amount of interest the alien showed let him see what was really under the hood...he did his best not to stare, but definitely spared some glances while going through the images. First time he saw a real, non-demonic, alien, after all! "A lot changes in a thousand years," Nix replied thoughtfully. "I guess that's not true where you come from? A thousand years ago, there were entirely different civilizations, this place," he gestured in the direction of the city, then to the images on his phone, "Was probably nothing but forest, or a little encampment that had nothing to do with Destiny City...our country here's been around for not even three hundred years, you know." "I dunno where that capital would be, honestly. All this stuff makes me question how much we really know about Earth's history." He rubbed his chin, considering briefly, before his thoughts turned to the question of fallen worlds. The question briefly confused him, and he replied, "Well, it's..." he looked around, about to say, 'no, we're still here,' but then realized the question was not about Earth, but rather Nix."Honestly, I've never been there," he said instead. "not, uh, 'this life,' anyway. Guess I was there way in the past, as somebody else?" After a shrug, he continued, "But I guess it'd have to be pretty abandoned for me to be here, right? I should probably go see it some time. Maybe there's a way to bring all these worlds back."

“Maybe,” Caedus agreed. He sounded optimistic but it may have simply been wishful thinking. “But you will never know if you do not try. Why have you not gone to your world?” he asked; there was no caution in his voice and it was clear he meant no ill-will of it. He was a curious creature and Nix had been kind enough to converse with him on a topic he was genuinely invested in. “I can see the appeal of Earth. It is flourishing. But in my youth I had difficulties staying in one place for too long. My time here on Earth has not soothed my wanderlust.” It had worsened it, but caution and a fear of being trapped further away from his home prevented him from accepting any trips to homeworlds. At least here on Earth he could gather energy, but out there? On any number of dead worlds? He could not justify the risk. “A thousand years is enough time to see much change. I hope my world has changed like Earth has. I will be very proud when I return, though. No matter what has happened.” But, he had faith. He trusted that they would have persisted and flourished in all this time. “You will have to tell me what your world is like. When you go,” he insisted. Polite, but eager. “I should like to hear stories.”

"I guess I just hadn't thought about going yet," Nix admitted. "I mean, going to visit another planet sounds cool...but...there's so much to do here..." he trailed off. "I should do that. Yeah, definitely." He smiled at the old alien. "And if you haven't gone home yet, I'll tell you all about it!" A nod at that, as if to punctuate the idea of it definitely happening. Planning a trip to the place in space called Nix was something he'd thought about, certainly, but more of an abstract, 'something I'll do eventually' type idea. He started thinking, then, about who to talk to to figure it all out. Themisto, probably, and the cats. They'd all know. But then his thoughts returned to right where he was, and the man he was talking with... "Hopefully you do get home...and everything is better than you hope!" He grinned. Ever the optimist, even when things were looking terrible. It was just easier to think that way, as far as he was concerned. "And then you'll probably come back to visit, and then I can tell you about it. I'd love to hear about what your home is like these days." He was a sappy kid, and he knew it.

Caedus almost seemed to smile; his face was still concealed by shadows, but his eyes seemed to close just slightly and his demeanor softened once more. "I should like that," he confessed. "I have missed my home. There are many great things to tell of it. When I return," because it was more than a thought, it was a promise, "I will tell you more of it. When the Negaverse has been handled, when your Earth--the universe--is safe, and we have we may speak at length in the peace that follow. And you will tell me of your world and all of its wonders.” He was hopeful with an optimism that didn’t seem quite befitting of someone who seemed to hold such pessimism in other aspects. It seemed though, that his love of worlds—and their secrets, their adventure, was enough to inspire him. “I hope, one day, you can all see your worlds. I would bet that even now you will find untold beauty. And strength. My world always gave me strength.” His hand rested over his chest, as if to soothe some ache, but he sighed and lowered it back to his side.

Nix raised his eyebrows ever so slightly at such a definitive proclamation about the Negaverse's future ('handled'!), but he smiled and nodded all the same. They had to prevail eventually, no question there! Hopefully it didn't take forever. "Oh, I'll bet it'd be really cool to zip around space in a big ship, or Stargates! That'd be pretty great, wouldn't it? Being able to visit everywhere. How'd they do it in the past, I wonder...? Did everybody just pull out a phone thing and teleport?" He shrugged. "What ever the case, I really do wanna hear about your world...and maybe see it, too. At least like this." He gestured to his phone with the pictures of Destiny City. As he did that, he also observed the time. "Mm...I should probably get going...we've been sitting here a while. Thanks for talking to me, Caedus, it was nice to meet you!" He grinned broadly, and held out his hand to shake it...not at all thinking about the fact that an alien might not like that sort of gesture. The Space Cauldron It's only been 7 months since this started, lol. A nice, quick RP! <3
