It didn’t take long for Malus to walk Tobias back to his house, and Tobias was happy to have gotten the trophy that he wanted from the senshi, but something about the encounter just left him feeling…
Unhappy.
Tobias was not the type of person to ever feel guilty for anything...so why should openly flirting with a senshi cause such feelings...or perhaps it was the fact that he had been eating fast food and had been caught, and even if it wasn’t Evan who had caught him, Malus seemed to have a dislike for the fatty, greasy stuff as much as his boyfriend did.
Well. Not boyfriend...but…
Well.
Sighing, Tobias pulled out his phone and dialed Evan’s number, wanting to both confess to his bad eating habits of the day...and the fact that he had flirted with someone else...and perhaps try to once again win the boy over to actually become his boyfriend...because…
...The rejection was honestly starting to hurt his feelings.

Malus had barely made it a few streets over before his phone rang and, horrified, he fumbled to pull it from his pocket. Realistically, he knew it was dangerous to carry his civilian phone while powered, but he knew how dangerous it could be if he needed to contact someone for help—or the other way around. He carried it as a precaution.
When it went off, he expected the worst, but when he realized it was Tobias, he frantically powered down so he could answer it.
“Hi,” he greeted, suddenly glancing between the fountain where he was supposed to meet Michel and his house. He didn’t quite know what to do so stood, shadow-watching, clutching the phone to his face. He tried not to sound like he was standing in the middle of the park without shoes on. “It’s late,” he blurted, “Are you okay?”

“No I’m not okay. I miss you.” Tobias flopped backwards onto his bed, staring at the ceiling. “I mean, yeah I’m physically okay…but I ate fast food today and I had to confess that I did it. Threw some of it away though…so I’m still kind of hungry if maybe you wanted to come over and cook for me? Or I could come over and you could cook for me…?”
He sighed, flopping his arm over his eyes to block out the light that was wobbling slightly from his ceiling fan. “I flirted with someone too and…I’m feeling really guilty about that. It wasn’t a lot of flirting…and I talked about you too so I mean…”
Going silent for a moment, Tobias swallowed. “I want to see you, Evan. I miss you and I just…I want to see you. I love you. I love every damn bit of you, and I just…I know I said I’d wait but I’m…I think about you all the time, and I know I shouldn’t be telling you all of this over the phone but I can’t hold anything back now so…let me see you and let me love you and be my boyfriend for real, okay? Because I already tell everyone I meet that we’re dating…and I love you more than I love anyone else, and I’m starting to think that includes myself, Evan, and honestly, that scares me. Because, I love myself a whole hell of a lot.”

Evan found himself stunned by the confession; his heart was pounding loudly and his blood was rushing so quickly that he almost couldn’t even hear Tobias on the other end of the phone.
He was quiet for a few seconds. For a moment. For an eternity.
It wasn’t like he hadn’t had the thought in his mind for some time now, but he still doubted himself. He’d just mess things up, he knew it. There was a crushing pressure, both with the idea of a relationship and with saying yes.
If he said yes, the chase was over. Everything that made this a challenge was gone. Tobias could lose interest and leave.
Or, things could stay the way they were. Or get better.
Evan didn’t know; he hadn’t ever had a relationship that went well. And maybe that was part of what terrified him.
“Tobias,” he said finally. “…You know I’ll cook for you any time, okay? We can meet at my house. It’s just me, Cambria and Zac are out right now.”
He’d have to text Zac and let him know that he wasn’t going to meet with him tonight. This felt more important than powering up, anyway.
His mouth suddenly felt dry and he tried to figure out the rest of the words. It wasn’t a conversation he wanted to have over the phone and he wound up toeing at the ground, poking at the concrete with his cat-printed sock.
“…I’m not saying no, by the way,” he added after a few seconds. “…To your question. Your proposition. It’s not a no. And I’m not saying I don’t want it. I’m just saying that…I’m afraid that if I say yes,” he was quiet for a moment.
“…I’m worried I won’t be interesting anymore,” he finally confessed. “…And I’m worried I’m going to mess things up. And I’m worried that I’d do something and we wouldn’t work out, and then we wouldn’t be friends anymore, and…”
His voice seemed like it had left him; it was hard to talk and he forced the words out. “…I’m worried I’d lose you.”

Tobias had vaulted himself off of the bed the moment that Evan invited him over, snatching up his car keys from the dresser and making a beeline for his flashy vehicle. Though, when Evan continued, he paused, swallowing. “There’s nothing that you could do that would make you uninteresting…you…” He reached up, rubbing at his eyes, finally just giving a rather defeated sounding laugh. “You are just…unimaginable. I will always be your friend, even if a romantic relationship doesn’t work out…I just…you make me crazy, Evan…”
The laugh escaped his throat again and he slipped into the car, closing the door. “I’m on my way. I’ll be at your house soon…I just…I love you, Evan. I don’t know what else to say, and it’s driving me crazy, I’m not normally at a loss for words so…”
Letting out a breath, Tobias started the car. “I’m on my way. I’ll see you in a few minutes, Evan. I love you.”

Evan realized that he was going to have to hurry home if he was going to beat Tobias; he didn’t want to rush him off the phone but Tobias was going to know that something was up if he heard Evan panting for breath while he ran on the other end.
He didn’t know how it slipped out, either because he was feeling absentminded or because it was what he wanted to say, but he replied, “Love you too.”
It took a few seconds for him to realize what he had said and his face suddenly began to burn. “Hey, I’m going to get something on the stove, so I’ll see you when you get here. Just let yourself in, okay? I’ll be in the kitchen. Talk to you in a minute.”
He didn’t give Tobias the chance to refuse; he had to get home, fast. He didn’t even have the wits to power up before he charged towards his house, bolting through any shortcut he could think of. He didn’t care that he didn’t’ have shoes, or that he would usually be so nervous that he only stuck to the illuminated areas.
Right now, all he could focus on was getting home, fast, and hoping that he didn’t mess anything up.

The phrase had Tobias speechless, and when the phone call ended, he simply stared at his phone for a moment before swallowing, placing the device on the seat next to him and driving to the nearest ‘fancy’ grocery store. All of the florists were closed at this time of the night and now he had to bring flowers so after spending no more than fifteen minutes in the store, he finally returned to the car with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a gift card for five hundred dollars.
He hoped that Evan would like having the money to explore around the store and not worry about how expensive the things were…
...but he also hoped that Evan wasn’t going to think of this as a bribe or anything, because it wasn’t.
By the time the blue haired male made it to Evan’s house, his palms were sweating and he felt almost as though he was going to throw up. This was not normal. Not for him. Not at all.
Tobias almost knocked on the door, and then just pushed it open, kicking his shoes off at the entrance and making his way to the kitchen, swallowing. “So...you love me, hm?”
He tried to sound poised and cocky, but his voice was breathy and there was far too much hope in the words to sound even remotely natural for Tobias. He wanted the words to have been true, wanted it more than he could have articulated.

Evan had managed to make it to the house and, once there, he texted Zac to let him know that Tobias was over. To which, Zac had texted some snarky response, but Evan hadn’t even replied yet. Zac was teasing, he knew that much, but he didn’t have time to think about Zac and Tobias right now.
Instead, he was in the kitchen, trying to whip up something to eat while simultaneously trying to catch his breath. He had been so trapped in his thoughts that he didn’t even realize when Tobias entered and jumped, nearly dropping the mixing spoon he was holding. He caught it, barely, and clutched it tightly as he blurted, “Tobias.”
That was it. There wasn’t much more than that.
Just, Tobias.
He didn’t know what to say or how to respond; his eyes found the flowers and then shot back to the taller male’s face.
“Well,” he said after another few seconds. “…Obviously. Yes. I mean,” He faltered and swallowed the lump in his throat. “I just…I’m sorry I haven’t said it before or anything. You’re really important to me, you have been for a while. But the whole relationship, the whole love thing, I guess it’s just been really intimidating. It still is, don’t get me wrong, I just.”
His brows knit and he looked up at Tobias almost helplessly. “I can’t say no forever. It’s gotten really hard recently. I mean, I don’t know what to do about any of it, and I’m still scared and intimidated by it, but…I just…I couldn’t keep saying no…”

Tobias hesitated for a long moment, simply staring at Evan. Finally he crossed the distance between the two of them and kissed the younger boy with as much passion as he could muster, groping for the counter and laying the flowers atop it, finally wrapping Evan in his arms as he deepened the kiss.
When it was over, he broke away and rested his forehead against Evan’s. “I utterly adore you, everything I know about you just makes me love you more and more, and I’m so sorry if I pressured you into loving me, I didn’t want to do that...I just…”
He drew in a breath, shaking his head. “You mean the world to me...and I just...want you to know that I’m never going to lose interest, at least, I don’t see myself losing interest. You’re not a prize to be won, you’re a person to be loved, and you are the most loving, gentle, kind human I have ever met, and...and you honestly make me crazy. Utterly crazy. But in a good way...and I mean...if you keep saying no, I’ll keep coming back. I need you in my life. The thought of losing you makes me want to throw up, so don’t worry about that...because I hate throwing up.”
Tobias smiled rather weakly and moved slightly, burying his head in the crook of Evan’s neck. “I just want to be yours…”

There was something dually exhilarating and frightening about the way Tobias kissed him; for a split second he felt a rush of fear, a rush of entrapment—and then it melted away. He felt safe, and warm, and loved.
The kiss had stolen his breath away, so when Tobias broke it, Evan just shifted positions so he could rest against Tobias’ chest. “If you keep saying such nice things like that, you’re going to make me cry. I mean, I’m really grateful that you’ve been so patient with me for so long, but if I say yes now, I just don’t want you to think that everything is going to magically just going to change. I’m not going to be any better at opening up, or talking about my problems, or kissing, or any of those things. But if you’ve been patient for so long, maybe…I mean, you made it to me saying yes, right? So everything else should be easy, right? Like, you already made the run up the hill, everything else is downhill. But I just want to make sure I’m open with you about things like that. Because, there are still things I’m not really so good with, and I don’t want to get better at them. Yet,” he corrected quickly.
“Change is just hard for me. I need a lot of time. But I guess you already knew that about me.” He closed his eyes and relaxed against Tobias completely. There was a lot he could be worrying about right now, but with Tobias so close…
It was hard to focus on anything but him.

Tobias’s whole body relaxed when Evan’s did and he sighed happily, his hand going up to entwine in the male’s hair. “You are more precious than I can begin to say, Evan...thank you. I don’t expect things to change...I just...I mean, it’s really just what I call you...I get to say that you’re my boyfriend now and not feel guilty about it...because…”
He looked almost guilty and pulled away a little bit, hands slipping into Evan’s as he did so. “I brag about you all the time, and I’m not sorry for it. You’re...everything that I didn’t know I needed...and this isn’t the end of everything, or even the finish line...I don’t think there is a finish line. This is just the start of something new...the beginning of a whole new adventure...and I’m excited that you’re by my side…”
His face was red and for a moment he seemed too embarrassed to speak. This was the sort of crap that was in Hallmark greeting cards, not the stuff that came from Tobias’s mouth.
Clearing his throat, he pulled the gift card from his pocket and held it out, now unable to meet Evan’s eyes. “I got you this. It’s five hundred...I thought you could go wild in the spice aisles of that fancy store you’ve told me about...and not worry about how much you’re spending on coriander.”

Evan wanted to smile. Really, he was smiling when Tobias began speaking. But then, he had to bring up money and suddenly he looked a bit green, horrified again at how much Tobias had spent on him.
“You didn’t!” he insisted, eyes darting from the card to Tobias’ face. Guilt flooded through him, combating the excitement he was feeling. He didn’t want Tobias to think he was doing this for money, and in his heart he must have known that wasn’t the case.
But, Tobias knew him very well. He wanted to go shopping immediately, wanted to cook Tobias something amazing. Wanted to be worth all of this. Almost playfully (but partly seriously), he swatted at Tobias. “You have to stop! I don’t need your money! You—you are good enough for me! Besides, soon we’ll have the food truck up and running, and I’ll have enough money to buy all the spices I could ever need.”
He was determined on that, even if he still hadn’t entirely settled on his menu.
“But—are you sure? Tobias, the card is still in your hand, you still have a chance to change your mind it won’t hurt my feelings. But as soon as you give it to me, know that I’ll already have my shopping list planned. But I’m going to go stir the food I’m making and give you a few seconds to think about it, okay?” he prompted, slipping from Tobias’ arms so he could tend to the food before it burned.

Tobias let Evan go, chuckling softly and moved behind him, slipping the giftcard into the back pocket of Evan’s Jeans and resting his hands on the boy’s shoulders. “Relationships aren’t about holding back cards, Ev. You show your hand to the person that you’re in love with, and I know you don’t need my money, but I don’t think you can understand how much I like to see the expression on your face flit from excitement and panic and then finally settle on this utterly adorable mixture of the two, with excitement always wining out in the end because…I mean. It’s food related, and I know that’s your passion…so…”
Leaning down slightly, Tobias pressed his lips to the back of Evan’s neck, grinning. “So I’m going to keep giving you gifts, not to buy your affection, but to gain amusement from your reactions. They’re not bribes, they’re just…it’s like spending money on myself anyway. You make great things with my gifts…and how is it much different than dropping the money on a fancy restaurant? Or Fast food? At least…spending my money on you makes you happy and me happy and keeps my stomach full. So it’s literally the best thing I could do.”
He pulled away but kept one hand on Evan’s back, trailing down it. “There’s no need to think about it. There’s never a need to think about it. I love you.”

Goosebumps speckled Evan’s skin and he couldn’t help but squirm at the kisses, at the closeness. He grumbled something incomprehensible—probably muttering something about fast food and chastising Tobias for wasting his money on such things—but he spoke with little investment on the matter. His head was swimming too much for him to focus on anything, much less being mad.
He let Tobias hold him and didn’t complain about the hand on his back; he just flopped his forehead against Tobias’ chest.
There was a lot he should say, but nothing specifically came to mind. His thoughts all felt like liquid sloshing around in his head, and every time he tried to latch onto a single thought it just slipped through his fingers.
He closed his eyes and a soft laugh fell from his face. “I don’t know what to say,” he mumbled into the taller male’s chest. “Everything you said is really nice, and I can’t even think of one thing to say back to you.” He tried again, but the results were the same. Instead, he offered, “I can finish cooking for you, though. Do you want to spend the night? We can put on a movie or something, and make a nest, or, you know, go shopping for spices and cook all night…”

“I think the first option sounds perfect...and maybe tomorrow we can go shopping and cook for the rest of the day, if you’d be interested. If not, well...we can do whatever else would make you happy.” His hand found it’s way to Evan’s hair and pulled his head closer, grinning. “For now though...if you have a few moments to not stir whatever that is...I would like to just stay like this for a second...This is nice.”
Everything about this was nice. Especially the part where Evan sort of said yes to dating him...or at least...he hadn’t said no.
“Really quick though Evan...you do want to go out with me, yeah? I think I sidetracked you with the gift card and that wasn’t my intention...but...regardless, I want to spend the night and all the other plans we made. And also, regardless...I love you. And we’ll always be friends, no matter what happens with any romantic relationship...Promise.”
