Al was sprawling lazily atop one of the very few patches of grass that survived the training fields and keenly watched for anyone coming or going.

He perked up and sat straight up as soon as he thought he saw someone and made sure to stare at them expectantly as he got to his feet.

Oliver had been intending on training anyway when he arrived on the field, but he didn't expect to find someone already there, with an intense stare as though just waiting for the invitation to be extended.

"Um, a-are you here f-for sparring?" Oliver asked hesitantly.

Al nodded eagerly at Oliver and summoned Nuru to his hands. He was wearing as smile as big and bright as the sun. It was someone he'd never sparred before but certainly seen in passing before.

"Here to spar too, or did you lose something else?" He sounded almost disappointed when asking the latter possibility.

Oliver blushed brightly. "N-no I... I didn't lose anything this time..." Although all the new hunters he had met earlier never knew of his track record as a trainee, it was still awkward to have it brought up. With as many pockets as his intermediate coat contained, these days he rarely lost anything that wasn't easily replaced.

Responding in kind, he summoned Jökul and waited long enough to make sure Al was ready before lunging with a fiercely quick swing.

Al honestly - hadn't expected Oliver to hit so hard and when he had it sent him reeling in shock and dulled pain. "Damn Ollie," was all he could really get out on the subject. He was too surprised to strike back just yet, let alone straight and true.

"S-sorry!" Oliver squeaked, hesitating for a second to make sure the other wasn't hurt. He shouldn't be, not with their FEAR shields, and the wards on the training fields to make sure there was no serious damage done... But it always alarmed him to feel that kind of forceful blow radiating up his arm from the axe.

He recovered from his hesitations faster than his partner, and took advantage of the defences left unprotected. Even if his axe could land a hard blow, the swings were necessarily wide, and often easy to predict and dodge. So Oliver had to take every possible opportunity given.

He leapt forward again, putting Al back within range of the axe and slashed downward.

Al barely registered the apology before Oliver was upon him again, slamming his massive weapon into his shield again with a yelp. One fatal flaw however, he'd brought himself closer to do so. Close enough the staff shot up and was cracked across his shield with a loud bang of noise as Al leapt to his feet again. "Don't apologize," he panted loudly. "I'm sure not sorry about that."

Oliver wheezed, Al had knocked the wind right out of him with that blow. It was probably for the best, he might have tried to apologize for apologizing, a clear indicator of his Canadian roots.

He staggered backwards, but only for a second before the skeletal blade of his axe was slicing towards Al once more.

"I'm better off getting beaten by you here than by a horseman out in the desert," Oliver gasped, now keeping a little bit more distance.

"Exactly," Al agreed. It had honestly summed up his feelings of late. He was done being afraid and was ready, finally, to take responsibility for the reason he'd come to Deus in the first place so long ago. To get stronger, to fight the bad s**t, and not die.

He took the next hit with a yelp. "******** man, you hit like a tank."

He grabbed his own weapon and swung right back before Oliver had a chance to get away again.

.Oliver thought he was just getting lucky with his attacks. It was easier to believe in luck than trust a fragile sense of accomplishment, and explain away the hard hits as a temporary blessing that was ultimately out of his control. Sure he had been forced to get stronger while off the island, but when it was offset by his naturally shy and gentle personality, could it ever be enough?

When Al's comment was followed up by a solid thumping, Oliver couldn't help but let out a short laugh. Who was it who was hitting like a tank now? The blow from the staff resonated up his arm, nearly making him drop his weapon.

Oliver quickly shifted to a two-handed grip and brought the axe down again, but this match was forcing him to stay on his toes. The axe was slower, more forceful than many other weapons, but also more clunky as a trade off. He just couldn't move fast enough to get in those massive hits without leaving openings his opponent could take advantage of.

"I hope I can live up to that compliment in the future," he mumbled.

Al very shortly proved again that no, Oliver, ya hit like a tank. Just accept it. He found himself flying backwards again and landed square on his back. He lied there for a moment. Contemplated his life choices that landed him here and proceeded to struggle to try and get back up again. His bones felt like jelly and instead of defending himself, he staggered about like a newborn deer a bit.

"The future is now," he mumbled.

Oliver had to bite back another apology as once again his axe struck harder than expected. Al didn't look to good after that last blow, all wobbly legged even after getting back to his feet. Unfortunately Oliver had learned his lesson the first time, and wasn't going to place himself at the mercy of that staff again over a little hesitation. The freckled young man preferred breathing, thank you very much.

He slashed out with the axe one more time, and perhaps it was the fear of getting clobbered again that put a bit more force into the axe than he had intended. How much more of that could Al take?

Not much, apparently. He held his hands up defensively - but it only do so much before his shield suddenly shattered around him and his staff desummoned in an instant. He'd lost and to the most unlikely of sources. Still, he laughed breathlessly. It was a good fight regardless and Oliver both gave Al a run for his money, and earned himself a bit more respect.

"Good... good fight, damn, you need to spar more often."

Oliver was both flattered and extremely concerned. But Al didn't appear to be hurt, couldn't be hurt with the wards and all...

"Ah, y-you too, that staff, it... it really did a number on me," he stammered, letting his own weapon return to it's totem form, and rubbing his shoulder where the second hard blow had landed. Oliver wasn't sure he would win a second match, but maybe he could afford to feel a little proud of himself for today's performance.
