[1v1] Shy vs. Snark (Oliver/Nash)

Oliver was restless. Being back on the island after so much time spent away was having exactly the effect he had feared, he was once again working his life away in the labs with only the bare minimum amount exercise required to keep his body strong. He wasn't used to this level of sedentary activity...

After a long jog failed to satisfy his desire for action, he set to work on the training field with his axe in hand, hoping for the first time someone might actually ask him for a fight.

"Hey."

The voice came from a figure standing behind Oliver, someone not quite tall, but not short either, one hand on his hip and the other holding the end of a long, ridiculously large whip that looked like some sort of carnivorous bug instead. It wasn't entirely clear how long Nash had been there, but from the look of it, several minutes.

A grin spread across his face.

"You're that guy from Dare Night. What's your name again?"

In spite of his hopes for the training situation, Oliver jumped as Nash spoke up, startled by his presence. It confirmed some of his worst fears, that he was already starting to lose the vigilance and attention he had developed while away from the island.

"Ah, um, O-Oliver Keeley," he stammered, glancing at the unusual weapon. He had also seen Nash at the team-building exercises, which he now knew to be speed dating, and made the wise decision to not mention that one.

He shifted his weight nervously. "Are you, um... Looking for someone to spar with?"

He was a nervous sort, which wasn't really Nash's thing, but he seemed nice enough as it was. Nash gave Oliver a long once over, gaze flickering across his face, and then gave a nod of his head, dark hair pulled back into a ponytail at the base of his neck.

"Yep, that's right. Feel up to it?"

Oliver fidgeted under the scrutiny, and even his determined expression looked rather frightened, but his nod was quick enough.

"Y-yes! Um... a-are you sure?" he squeaked, realizing that he was far more experienced despite their difference in confidence levels. Oliver took a defensive stance just in case, it never hurt to be careful.

His grin widened.

Nash leapt forward, swinging the whip around towards Oliver, hoping to at least snag some of the claws on his clothing, maybe knock him to the side a little. Acheri made a hissing sound in the back of his head, a rattle of a breath that was almost approval.

"I'm sure," said Nash, as if that wasn't obvious already.

It was a good thing Oliver had been prepared for the abrupt attack.

The strange claws of the whip scraped at Oliver's shield, but it wasn't enough to knock the young man aside. He caught most of the attack with the back of his arm, and the second the segmented whip had cleared a gap he lunged in with a horizontal slice. If he could keep the range close, perhaps the whip wouldn't have enough space to move.

For someone who enjoyed fighting, and enjoyed the thrill of a good one on one - or one on two - or whatever the case was - he was not very good at actually using his damn weapon. Nash was used to fighting with his hands, his feet, any other part of himself that came in handy - but the whip was large and cumbersome and kept getting in the way.

"Damn," Nash said, staggering back as Oliver's axe connected hard. "That thing could cut someone in half!"

He snapped the whip forward as hard as he could, aiming for the other's lower body, wanting to trip him up - and to his delight and surprise, the weapon connected viciously hard, metal clacking together as the segmented pieces shifted on impact.

Jökul was pleased with the praise and rumbled low in Oliver's mind, but the shy young man wasn't so convinced.

"I'm not nearly strong eno-OOPS!" He started to protest, seeing as it took a large number of factors beyond just the size of his axe to slice a person in half, but Nash's weapon was more devastating in close quarters than he had expected. Those segments turned the whip into a fierce blunt weapon as well, and Oliver was sure they would have broken both his legs if it weren't for the FEAR shield.

He had the benefit of experience behind him, or as much as possible for a lab-crawling science nerd in the Life division, and as he fell, his axe came down with him. Oliver used the momentum to his advantage, delivering a strong downward slice, and then scrambled to his feet before the next attack.

The ax was a formidable opponent. Nash didn't manage to avoid the next swing, which came down powerfully hard in the direction of his shoulder, slamming him almost into the ground in the process. Nash stumbled back, then gathered the whip towards himself again, coiling it up before smashing it forward once more.

"I'm pretty sure you could do it even without being strong enough," he said dryly.
