Gale's office was a tiny thing, but well kept and tidy, even after all of the mess that had happened over the last year. He had fastidiously maintained its careful appearance, including the sign on the door that said "Please knock" and then underneath, in smaller but more bolded and underlined letters, "especially if your name is Mark."
He was finishing paperwork now, filing away a few of the reports he'd been neglecting. Gale slid them into their proper folders, pushed away from his desk, and stood. The reading glasses were folded neatly and left on his desk, and he hadn't brought his coat, so he stepped out of the office and locked the door behind him, keys slipping into his pocket.
The Death offices were a little quiet this time of afternoon, when everyone meandered away to find lunch, which was exactly what Gale was doing as he ambled down the hallway towards the cafeteria.

Cassie was still orienting herself to the Death offices, and had been asked by a hurried hunter to give some papers to 'that blonde Death guy.' Wow, what a description. Cassie took the papers anyway, being the trainee she was, and just started wandering the halls until she found a living soul. So far, no such luck - apparently everyone was out to lunch. Cassie hated the cafeteria food, but it was still something she had to eat, no matter how long she procrastinated. About to give up and just shove the papers under a closed door, Cassie saw a familiar face come out of an office. Had he grown while she was gone? Cassie's smile widened on her face, but she didn't immediately approach Gale. Cassie was lithe and light, barely weighing 120 pounds soaking wet. Her coat was on that day, and she wasn't in her assignment armor. She turned to face the wall before Gale could see her face, pretending to text someone until he passed by. As soon as he was a few feet away from her, she crouched and began to tail the man. Hopefully, despite his years of experience, Gale wouldn't notice her in his quest to the cafeteria.

Gale continued on towards the cafeteria, pulling out his phone along the way to send a text to Stormy, letting her know that he would be home soon before he slid it back into his pocket. The hallways were mostly empty, but every now and then a burst of laughter or a babble of voices would come from one of the rooms he passed.
The cafeteria was just up ahead and didn't take long to reach it. Gale tucked his hands behind his back and suppressed a yawn, long blond hair pulled neatly back into a ponytail at the base of his neck to keep it out of his face while he worked. He had at least gotten a significant amount of work done today, probably because he had not - miraculously - been interrupted.
A few yards away from the cafeteria Gale said, without turning around,
"Going somewhere?"

s**t. Cassie knew Gale was good at what he did, but holy s**t was he good at what he did. Cassie just had to smile, standing at her full, short, height of five feet five inches, and sauntered up to Gale, giving him a light punch in the shoulder. "Long time no see, stranger." She gave the older Death Hunter a full smile. "How've you been?"

Cassie, at five foot five inches, was, in fact, just around Gale's own meager height, although he had gained just the smallest amount so that he was barely an inch above her now. It didn't quite make for the most intimidating impression, but, well. There was always his gun.
"Fine," he said, offering Cassie a small smile as he turned to face her fully now, eyebrows raised, an expression of amusement flickering in his eyes. "it's been awhile."
"What, exactly, were you doing?"

"Trying to be a spy." Cassie sighed, mischievous grin still plastered to her face. Apparently the woman was far out of practice, and the high heels she'd chosen to wear that day most definitely didn't help. "Ah well, guess I'll just need more training." She shrugged, winking at Gale. "This is for you, I think?" Cassie handed him the report in her hands, rolling her eyes. "Some lug just shoved it into my chest and told me to give it to 'that one blonde hunter.' Honestly, whatever happened to details?" Her bouncy curls shook with her head. "Did you want to grab lunch? Or do you have something planned with Stormy?"

"Well, you didn't do half bad," said Gale, which was perfectly true. "I've just been around Mark and Lucky too long otherwise, although Mark has all the spy abilities of an elephant on wheelies, so I suppose that's not entirely a good judgement of abilities."
He reached out a hand and accepted the report, flipping it open to scan a glance down the sheet. "Ah, yes, thank you," said Gale, and closed it again, tucking it under one arm before he gave a small laugh. "Well, I've often wondered that myself in the last few years."
His smile tugged a little further into place at the offer. "No, I haven't gotten anything planned. I'd be glad to have lunch with you - you can catch me up on how things are going."
Gale gestured ahead at the cafeteria, beginning to walk again.
"How have you been?"

Cassie had to stifle a chortle when Gale brought up Mark, nearly doubling over. The man was often smelt before seen. "I often wonder if we could somehow get Life to utilize Mark's lovely perfume of Axe and BO as a weapon." Still, Cassie beamed at Gale's praise - 'not half bad' was good in Gale speak, as far as Cassie was concerned. Pleased that Gale took up her offer for lunch, Cassie made sure to keep stride with Gale until the got to their seats, trays full of slop. "Here work?" She asked, smoothing out the back of her skirt and taking the seat at the mostly empty table before Gale could answer anyway. "I've been...good. Upstairs apparently decided that I should be doing some recon at a fair amount of our external bases for the past year or so, so that's been fun."

Gale wrinkled his nose.
"I'm sure it'd be used as a vile creation one day," he said, with a snort of laughter. "I'm honestly a it surprised it hasn't been used now, I would've thought by this time, all these years later, something would've been done. But I suppose we'll just have to wait and see."
The cafeteria wasn't exactly an ideal place to eat, but his kitchen was sorely lacking, and they were in desperate need of a trip to the grocery store. Gale piled his own tray high with a very varied selection of food before he took a seat across from Cassie.
"What sort of work?" he asked, taking a carton of milk off to make more room, setting it beside his tray as he reached for a fork next. The pasta he'd gotten was stirred carefully before Gale took a bite. "Have you been looking into anything while you were at those bases?"

Cassie's tray had about half the food Gale's did on it, mostly because the trainee didn't exactly love the food served. At least it wasn't Top Ramen for the 10th day in a row, like she'd grown used to pre recruitment era. Her juice box was already empty by the time Gale finished his question, and she was lazily playing around with some overcooked, canned peas. "Hm? It was mostly just FEAR level observation. I was in Seoul for a good while, monitoring a few farms outside the city where there had been reports of suddenly dead crops, and our scanners got massive FEAR readings." Cassie let go of the fork, folding her hands in her lap. "Turns out this group of Dokkaebi, sort of like goblins or orcs, had been playing a prank. They were driven off shortly, but then we had to find how they got into the Human world in the first place." Cassie's lips pursed and brow furled. "We never did find that portal." She shoved some cold peas down her throat, surprised to find they didn't taste completely of old gym socks. "Then they sent me to the Arctic, where I did nothing but write out a bunch of numbers." The force of Cassie's eyeroll could have leveled a building. "I'm getting a little sick of playing secretary."

He sort of wished he had more juice boxes, come to think of it. Gale twirled a few more strands of pasta onto his fork before taking a bite; and while it wasn't exactly the most exciting or well cooked of foods, he at least was used to the taste by now.
His brows drew together. "Sounds like you at least didn't have a dull time," Gale remarked, the corners of his lips quirking. "But it's good to know there wasn't any artifact in connection with that, as I'm sure your report mentions; I haven't heard anything about Seoul recently, either."
Not that he'd been sent on any external missions recently. It had been a while.
Gale took another bite of pasta and said, with a touch of dryness, "Numbers are a part of the Death Division as a whole, I'm afraid. Get that bottom line and all. But are you at least enjoying it? Well," he amended, "Perhaps not the secretarial aspect, I mean. But everything else."

Sorry Gale, but Cassie's report had not mentioned the lack of an artifact. She silently cursed herself for forgetting such a crucial details; was she not the one just bitching about a lack of details? God, how stupid. Her shoulders heaved for a brief moment, then Cassie was back to her normal posture. She would just have to amend the report at some point. "Mm, no artifact was a good thing, yea." Another forkful of peas, and she nibbled at the pasta. Not too terrible. Cassie liked Gale, to be sure. He was nice, friendly, had a fun accent, and told things like they were, even if they were harsh truths. Hell, the didn't even need to be hard. Cassie nodded along to what Gale had said about the division as a whole, reluctantly agreeing. "Yeah, I mean it could be worse. I could be in Sun, and probably dead already." She gave a blase shrug, having accepted her inevitable death around the same time Excalibur had put the lock and chain around her arm. "Would you happen to know," She started, lazily dumping her peas into her pasta, "anything about weak spots between our world and the Halloween world? I know we have Camp Lucy, and a few other weak spots, but is there any information on what causes those weak spots?" The fact that her team couldn't find the weak spot concerned Cassie, to say the least. It left a hollow, unfinished feeling in her gut. "Can Horsemen create that sort of thing?"

Gale ate a few more bites of pasta, watching Cassie from over his tray. She was looking a little shifty; likely she'd forgotten to add something to the report, but it wasn't as though that didn't happen on a daily basis, especially in the Death Division (thanks to certain people whose names began with L and M).
He made a face. "I could never be in Sun. Far be it from me to criticize other Division Leaders, but I'm quite sure I could never get along well with Allan. Simon, perhaps, but...well, and they are the front line of everything, I'm much more suited as backup."
Gale smiled a little. "I'm the shooter in the window, or the one from behind," he said, sounding faintly amused. "Which I'm content with. I'd rather those who are more capable be up at the front. And from what I've seen, you're more comfortable in the shadows as well."
Not that he was all that familiar with it, but still. Gale toyed with his fork, absently twirling it through his pasta. After a moment, he said, "Well, there's the Haunted House, of course, which crosses over. Camp Lucy's a more recent discovery. There have been other places every now and then, but most don't last very long."
He disliked not knowing the answer, but he said it anyway. "As for the Horsemen...well, I wouldn't put it past them, but nothing is concrete at the moment."

Nothing ever seemed to be concrete at Deus, unfortunately. Cassie held in her frustrations - no one was at fault for the lack of Horsemen information. As far as she knew, there were no Horsemen golems or any other way to do recon in the Horsemen Tower, meaning that the enemy's secrets were relatively safe. "I see." More cold peas and pasta down her gullet, and Cassie pushed the tray aside, full and relatively satisfied. She could cook better, but that was a moot point in the basement. "That's unfortunate." Cassie had to snicker at Gale's comment about the shadows. "I am the night." She gargled, doing her best Christian Bale impression with a cheeky grin, holding up her weapon's bat shaped totem. "Just too bad I trip over myself more than I hit a target." Cassie rolled her eyes, sighing as Tendaji mounted his cranial assault. "Is it possible that my weapon and I were a mistake?"

He was quiet for a moment, then said honestly, "Well, I suppose that is possible. But I've always been more a believer that you're here for a reason. And granted, sometimes being here is frustrating. I didn't think I was meant to be here, either."
Gale's fork twirled in his pasta, mind going far away momentarily. "I was certain that things wouldn't go well; that because of my age, they would send me back almost immediately."
He came back to himself and offered Cassie a faint smile.
"But you do what you can while you're here; I think, to be perfectly honest, you'll be just fine."
