Everything was very new, very shiny. It was obvious that the work space hadn't really been used yet. As if someone had only just peeled the protective film off of everything. Sterile. From the computer set up on the corner of the desk, and the single large tank set up against the wall with a lone occupant staring out into the room.

Zeke, sitting at the desk, still appeared to setting everything up. There was a box at his feet with obviously worn notebooks and a few field guides in it, all of which carried an aquatic theme. On the desk itself, beside his coffee mug, a small stack of glossy photos, peeking out of the flaps of a manila folder.

They'd told him that he'd be taking someone under his wing, something about a mentorship program. To him it sounded an awful lot like lab assistant, and that was just fine by him. Now that he was actually in the labs, his time more evenly split between research and the infirmary, there was more work to be done, and he was going to need more help than Harley would have time to give him in between her own duties.

Lex had been told to go to a certain section of the labs, to meet a certain someone. They'd apparently be his mentor, or something? The teen definitely needed one for this island. He'd been told by some kind stranger in the cafeteria that he had returned from Tel Aviv, Israel, at 30 years old. Then, got jumped on a recon mission and nearly died - had to be podded up. Things went down in February of this year, and some of the Hunters had become teenagers again, all their old memories lost.

This all made Lex very confused, a little sad for the Lex of the past, but just mostly happy to be alive and not having some sort of coma dream. He knew very little still, except that he had a home, a weapon, and what division he was in. Lex also knew that this was until he died, so he may as well get used to it.

Approaching the lab space he'd been assigned, Lex knocked on the wall. "Hi, my name's Lex. I'm supposed to meet someone here?"

The voice at the door pulled Zeke's attention up from his organizing, and the look the young trainee would receive was a thoughtful one. Not disappointed, but not excited, either. This want exactly what the Life Hunter had been expecting when they'd spoken to him.

"You're looking for me." He turned in his chair to offer his hand out. "I'm Ezekiel Young."

"Did they tell you what you'd be doing?" Or what they'd be working on. Or anything, really. Zeke was curious how they'd gone about selecting Lex to work with him, or if it's just been random.

“It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Young.” Lex smiled politely, shaking the older man’s hand. “Lex Jamil, fresh from the pod.” Sort of. Lex didn’t like talking about the whole age thing, unless prompted. What was he even like, he wondered. Did he have friends? Was he married? Who even knew. “I’m uh, excited to work with you.”

The teen blinked a few times, tussling the hair in back of his head. “I was just told to assist you and learn the ropes. Something about getting me up to speed and seeing-“ Lex almost let slip the phrase ‘if I remembered anything.’ “Seeing how I fit in here.”

No prior experience, and no former specific fields of study, that made the easier. Zeke's while brightened. "Good. You'll be working on some interesting things, and not so interesting things, but hopefully it'll be a decent enough balance between the two." He gestured to the maidmer in the tank, and was rewarded with a tiny hand waving back at him. Which he ignored. "I study crazy s**t like that. Aquatic Fear based life forms, and normal aquatic organisms that have been effected by Fear."

Slouching down in his chair, he lifted one leg to prop his ankle on the opposite knee. "There's another girl that works with me a lot on this stuff, her name's Harley. I'm sure you'll see her around pretty often. If I'm not around, and you have a question about something, you can ask her, too. She's a Life trainee, tall, lots of wild, red hair." He probably be seeing a lot of Ever, also, but Zeke figured that didn't need to be shared just yet.

His head tilted as he gave the young man a long, thoughtful look. "How old are you, any ways?"

“Four- no, fifteen.” Lex shook his head a little, a small, frustrated frown tugging down on the corners of his lips. “Had a birthday in the pod, I guess.” Because somehow that sounded less crazy than ‘I became half my age.’ “Sixteen in April.” As if that was supposed to make him seem more mature.

The teen gave a little wave back at the maidmer. He didn’t necessarily mind the weird little creatures - mini pets, or whatever - that much. They were cute in the way pugs and snails were. “Sounds interesting enough.” He nodded, approaching the tank. “I haven’t spent much time around the water. We visited Tahoe a bit, and Yosemite. I’ve never been to the ocean before I came here.” Lex stood entranced by the little creature for a bit, then faced his mentor.

“I’m excited to work with you. A bit of structure will be nice.”

Ah ha, that's what he'd thought.

{There's more around than I thought.} To which Zeke could only agree silently. {Can you imagine how the poor things feel? Waking up in a place like this, no memories of how they got here?}

He could not, and he thought as much to his partner as he gave the junior trainee a knowing look. It didn't seem like Lex was in a hurry to talk about it, which was fine, but Zeke did hope the kid didn't feel the need to hide it. The whole island knew about the hunters that'd been claimed by creation and forced back to their teen years.

He did appreciate that excitement, and the smile he flashed the young mane reflected that. "Do you know how to swim?" He'd be so lucky if the kid had any diving experience. Most didn't.

The look Zeke gave confirmed his fears; the older man knew. Of course he did, seeing as no one was supposed to be recruited under the age of 18.

< No one’s going to think you’re crazy anymore, Lexi. You know you can talk about it. >

‘Yeah yeah.’ Lex thought at the gryphon. ‘But that means I have to acknowledge it.’

Lex sighed, smile weakening. “I was told I used to work in the labs, before this.” He gestured to his body. “Apparently I was some sort of lobbyist type for higher education, and did a lot of translation work.” He gulped, shaking his head. “I’ve also been told that I used to date the head of the library, some woman named Amy? Anyway. I’m here, I’m 15, and I can swim.”

He regarded the young man with a tilt of his head, a small, amused sort of smile resting on his face. Apparently amused by just how uncomfortable the subject was making Lex. "Used to be, but that's not you anymore, so it doesn't matter. Not what you were, anyways." That person didn't exist anymore, and Zeke had never really known him to begin with. Just another hunter on the island that was a familiar name to him, but nothing else.

"Swimming is good." If need be, they could have worked around it, not being able to swim, but it was better that he could. Made things easier in the long run, but would also give Lex a more hands on role.

Oddly enough, Zeke's words were a comfort. He'd been sad for the old Lex essentially dying, but this version of Lex was still here, still alive and breathing. The old Lex was dead and gone, and no longer mattered. The boy's shoulders went back, and he stood a little straighter. A warmer smile was sent Zeke's way. "Thanks. Still sort of adjusting to all this, y'know? One day I'm just a regular kid from Vegas with plans to go dirt biking, the next I'm part of a secret global protection organization. It's a little much to wrap a head around."

Lex leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "A little chilly in here." He muttered, looking at the minipet. "So am I going to be finding more of these guys?"

Zeke glanced between the teen and the thermostat on the door, then back again. "It'll warm up. This work office hasn't been used for a while." It'd needed a bit of cleaning before Zeke had brought his research over. Another day or two, and everything would be put away and settled in, he was sure.

"Even for the rest of us the whole de-aging thing is a bit much. Can't imagine how you guys are actually handling it. It's impressive to see, really." For the most part, it seemed they'd all pretty much taken it in stride. "You could still dirt bike, if you wanted to. It wouldn't be hard to get one here, or to set up some kind of course." His shoulders came up in a shrug.

And then he was hiking a thumb over his shoulder towards the maidmer in the tank. "This guy came from Atlantis, which isn't the easiest dive. So you probably won't run into more of them right off the bat. But things like him, sure." Or her. He wasn't sure. "It still needs a name, too. Any ideas?"

Lex's pupils dilated for a few moments, just imagining what it would look like to set up a dirt biking course on the island. He could throw in a few jumps, obviously, and maybe even a pyrotechnic - no, that would be too much. Maybe just a few slopes, for now. "We can actually do stuff like that? Here I thought we were going to be, i dunno, bored and made to file paperwork all day when we're not scrubbing toilets or cooking slop in the cafeteria." The teen's posture went perky, all signs of moping gone.

"Uh, how about something silly like Socks or Buttons?" There was also the suggestion of 'Dong Lord', but Lex didn't think Zeke would appreciate that one as much as the teen did. Hell, it wasn't even that funny of a joke unless the Guys were around. "Or you could give it some sort of ironically badass name, like Poseidon or Neptune." The teen shrugged, then grinned something mischievous. "Personally, I'm a fan of Taco." He gave the creature a wicked raised eyebrow, then a wink.

"So...I'll be needing to learn to dive? Okay." Lex had gone off the high dive at the local pool, but that was it. It was easy to see the boy was made just a little nervous by the thought. The depths of the ocean already made Lex uneasy, but now knowing that there were FEAR creatures down there? Anxiety abounded.

< It will be fine. I've got your back. >

Zeke watched in continued amusement as Lex's expression visibly brightened at the mention of building a bike course. "It's a big island, lots of space. I doubt anyone would mind much." Hell, they could probably find other interested hunters to help build it. There had to be a few more out there with an interest in dirt bikes. "Everyone gets free time, assuming they get their duties done in a timely manner." Which wasn't hard, and the junior trainees had it easier than the rest of them. "What you do with it is up to you."

He turned his attention back to the maidmer as Lex started suggesting names for it, and though he'd accepted any of them--the name being the lest of his concerned, really--he'd laugh at the last one. "Taco it is." It was ridiculous, but that was probably the appeal. "Here, make him a label." He tossed the label maker at Lex as he said it. It was one of those digital ones, with the keyboard and the different font and size options. Lex would figure it out.

"And yeah, diving is pretty important for this field of study. It's not hard to learn though. We had a bunch of folks that'd never done it before toss on air tanks and follow us down to Atlantis not that long ago. If they can do it, you can."

"Oh, that's pretty cool." Lex nodded along, then yawned. "Ah, sorry. It's kinda drafty in my house, keeps me up at night and s**t." Lex waved one hand, using the other to stifle another yawn. "But yeah, building a dirt bike course would be bad a**." He paused for a second. "Wait...wouldn't I need to get dirt bikes powered by runic motors? Wouldn't that be expensive as hell?"

He supposed these questions could be saved for another day, when he was more awake. Seriously, a nap sounded like a dream right now.

"If it's alright, Mr. Zeke, I'd like to go catch some sleep on an infirmary cot." He yawned again, shaking his head vigorously. "Reggie says growing boys need their sleep."
