Personality: Sakamoto Rin is an older sister to a younger brother and daughter of a single father. Being the oldest child of a single parent family has shaped her into a responsible latchkey kid. Rin is accustomed to taking care of herself and her brother for the few hours before and after school when her dad is busy with work. Her relatives often praise her for being such a mature, well-behaved kid, which just makes Rin glow with pride. In many ways, Rin is just an absolute angel of a kid.
At times, though, Rin's puppy-like eagerness to receive praise from people she respects is known to get her into trouble. Sometimes, she'll try too hard and come off as a show-off, like when she's trying to show adults how good she is with video games. Other times, she'll try too hard and just make a big mess, like that one time she spilled paint everywhere in art class. Being scolded depresses Rin, but she always bounces back up with just a little bit of a nudge up. She's proven herself to be as emotionally resilient as she is responsible.
However, as a child, she's still very dependent on others. She doesn't know how to survive without adult supervision. Just because she's able to make simple dishes to feed her brother and herself on the days her dad has to work overtime doesn't mean she can actually survive on her meager cooking skills. Although, she's trying really hard to fix that. The same goes for every other basic necessity in Rin's life. She tries very hard to be independent and responsible for the sake of her busy family, but there are still times when she absolutely needs someone to comfort her, tell her that she'll be alright, or just protect her from her own innocence. Take, for instance, Rin's entry into FAO. She knew of the general concept of MMOs, but having never played one, she knew nothing about the etiquette and the rules surrounding mmos that most people simply take for granted. When prompted for a name, Rin entered her own last name. She would have entered her first, but it didn't have enough characters.
When cornered, Rin does her best to act tough, and she doesn't back down on her ideals. At her elementary school, she's known as a bane to bullies. Rin isn't afraid to call teachers for help, or when she can't, to scream and fight at the top of her lungs to attract attention. She carried a safety whistle alongside her house keys in the real world, and she wasn't afraid to use it.
Likes:
.xx► Cats and dogs: Really, any animal is adorable to Rin, especially the furry ones. Somteimes, she likes to make a game out of pretending to be them.
.xx► Songs: Rin can often be caught singing and humming, usually children songs or game soundtracks she's heard often.
.xx► Warmth: Being warm is a source of comfort for Rin, kind of like a teddy bear or comfort blanket. If it's cold out, she'll often spend extra time under the blankets despite being wide awake. Regardless of the temperature, she's a fan of cuddles.
.xx► Fighting games and Rpgs: Rin was introduced to games at an early age by her mother, an avid gamer. She clings to games to this day in memory of her beloved mother. While her seven year old mind and body isn't quite ready to truly excel at these games, she's been scolded every so often for playing fighting games with her friends, constantly winning against them, and then causing them to cry in the end.
.xx► Cooking: In memory of her mother, again, Rin enjoys cooking. Her mother used to be a skilled chef at a high-end restaurant and Rin still remembers the tasty dishes her mother used to make at home. Her brother has already forgotten, though, and Rin has made it a small personal goal to eventually be able to cook food for her brother that's as tasty as she remembers of her mom's.
Dislikes:
.xx► Sweet foods: Rin does like sweetness in her dessert but she's intolerant of overly sweet desserts, like most western style desserts. Sweet meats and other sweet dishes with a meal are also a no-no for Rin's taste buds, even though they're less sweet than the desserts Rin can enjoy, as the concept of sweet in a large meal is a strange concept.
.xx► Haunted Houses: The dark and spooky noises trigger Rin's imagination, spooking her severely. She's known to hide her head in someone else's shirt to try and ignore the scariness, but even then, she ends up whimpering the entire way through. By extension, anything of the horror genre is a sure way to make Rin shriek and cry. She hates jump scares the most.
.xx► Cold: The opposite of warmth, it's no surprise that Rin dislikes the cold. She'll do anything to avoid being cold and is not ashamed to cuddle with strangers.
.xx► Nightmares: Rin utterly hates nightmares, which makes her hate haunted houses and horror even more because such things are often followed by nightmares. Her way of coping with nightmares usually involves cuddling.
Strengths: It's hard for a seven year old to have much of a strength seeing as their body and mind are still very much developing. She certainly has things she's good at but most, like singing, from an in-game perspective and others, like being better at video games than the average seven year old, are offset by her youth. The one gift that can be considered an in-game strength for her, and even then only by virtue of the race she happened to pick, is her talent for acting. Even as a baby, before she was old enough to be introduced to games, Rin enjoyed playing pretend and copying what other people and things do. She still does and she's quite become good at mimicking others. Of course, there are moments when her immaturity will give her away when she's acting. Still, when she really gets into character, she's fantastic at roleplaying on the spot considering her age.
Weaknesses: While showing talent as a budding gamer, Rin's age holds her back. She has yet to fully develop the mental and physical faculties to appropriately deal with many in-game situations. Puzzles that others might find obvious are sometimes an insurmountable challenge for Rin and she just can't react as quickly as other gamers can. Not to mention, her character build choices often hinge on whatever she considers is cool at the spur of the moment and is anything but optimized.
History: Just two years ago, Sakamoto Rin lost her mother to a terrorist bombing of a public train. Rin's mother was a role model to Rin. Rin's dad, a talented actor in his own right, was as well, but he's still alive. Rin learned how to play video games with her mom, and she still remembers all the fun times the two would have bonding in front of a game console and TV screen. Then there were all the fond memories of the dishes Rin's mother made for the family, even after a long day at the restaurant. That was another thing Rin remembered about her mom. Her mom never seemed to tire of cooking, going about it as if it was the most fun thing in the world.
Needless to say, without her mom, the family never felt complete to Rin. At the same time, though, the death of her mom spurred on Rin's growth. Without a mom, Rin became more responsible. She learned how to take care of others, specifically her little brother, and how to cheer herself and others up. She was introduced very early to the idea that she needed to rely on her own strength in order to survive in the world. She learned how to cook. She kept on playing games in memory of her mother, and her interest in games even increased because now, games were one of the things that Rin could relate to her mother with.
Which is why when the VR helmet Rin's dad ordered for his own entertainment came in through the mail, Rin opened it up and tried it on herself without her dad's permission. It was such a tempting, short breach of the usually responsible girl. Rin entered the world of FAO for the first time on a completely fresh account. Bright-eyed and in awe of the immersive experience, Rin fiddled around randomly with the character creation options. Cat ears and tail because she like cats. Oooh, choose a guy avatar because this was her father's helmet after all. Black hair and fur because the family cat is black! Plus, different colored eyes look weird. Cool!
In this way, Rin created her very male FAO character and logged into the game world for the first time. Once she had her fill of the game, she was going to log out and power off the game. Except, she couldn't.
Goals: Rin is a seven year old lost in a game. She's lonely, misses her dad and little brother, and wants to go back home. Being so young, though, she's easily adapting to the strange new world she's in, and likes being where fun, interesting things are happening. She will always want to go back home to her family, but until she can, she'll enjoy her time in the world she's in.
