Prompt - Creepy Doll
You receive a mysterious package in the mail. It has your name on it, but no return address. Inside is an extremely creepy doll. Realistically it seems well made and well maintained, but there’s something off about it. If you choose to keep it, it seems to always have its eyes on you. Sometimes it seems to have moved from where you left it—and, since you received it, sometimes you hear a strange, echoing laughter. What do you do?
When the package first arrived Lulu was pretty excited, she had ordered some Halloween decorations and assumed they had arrived. The fact that it was missing a return address went unnoticed at first. It was curious that no one had knocked on her door to delivery the package, but perhaps the UPS guy was busy that day and didn't have time to deal with everyone personally. She set the box down on her dining room table and sliced open the tape. What she found inside was not what she expected though.
Sure, it looked like it could be a Halloween decoration. She would be sure to scare anyone that came into her house with this thing, but it wasn't something she had ordered. She set it down for now, facing away from her because those eyes were just creepily big and staring, then finally looked for any sort of label on the box. All she could find was her own address however. Maybe it was some sort of promotion, but it was all starting to feel a little too weird.
Maybe her father had sent it or her grandparents, she sent them all quick little texts just in case. Before long she had heard back from everyone and no one had any clue where it came from. Okay, this was only getting more creepy as the minutes rolled by. One the one hand, it if was a gift from someone she didn't want to just throw it out. And in it's own very creepy way it did make a very eerie Halloween decoration. She set it up in one of the living room chairs for now and just tried to forget it about it.
As they day dragged on and she busied herself about her apartment, she had this uneasy feeling that something was watching her. Normally she left her blinds open during the day to let the sunlight in for her plants, but she had opted to close them, thinking maybe there was some weird stalker set up outside. It didn't seem to solve the problem though, but she happened to pass by the chair in her living room and made eye contact with the doll that had arrived that morning. It seemed to be staring at her, she knew it was irrational. It was just unsettling because it was creepy. Give it some time and she'd get used to it. Hopefully....
Soon enough it was time for bed, but just as she was about to fall asleep she heard the sound of laughter. Did that come from somewhere in her apartment? She didn't normally hear her neighbors and so she bolted out of her bed in a freight. She didn't exactly have any sort of weapon in her bedroom, at least she had her phone though. She creeked her door open and looked out into the main room.
There wasn't anyone there, but as she scanned the room she noticed the doll from before had shifted in it's chair. It was watching her door now, but it had definitely not been like that before she went to bed. Nope, okay. She wasn't going to put up with this. Slowly she made her way over to it and after she took a deep breathe she picked it up, half expecting it to try to run away from her.
It did no such thing and she quickly packed it back into the box she had found it in. A quick trip out to the dumpster and it was gone. Of course, there was still no way she'd be sleeping any time soon. She turned on her tv and decided to settle in with a good movie, something to take her nerves away. Also, a good glass of wine never hurt anyone.
