Picture: Best Shepherd NA
Name: Hale Halli
Age: 18? That's how old she looks, anyway.
Race: Human, or at least she was at one point.
Personality: For someone who is completely mute, Hale is actually pretty expressive. She goes out of her way to show what she thinks of things, and no matter what the situation is, will always be forthright and brutally honest in the way she does things. She's smart, very much so, but is easily frustrated when her ideas aren't conveyed correctly- Which, for the sake of comedy, hopefully happens a lot. It's easy for her to get pulled up into things, but the nicer people are to her flock, the nicer she is to them. Hale is not particularly loyal, but will not abandon anyone she is travelling with, even if they are going to die. However, she is by nature a bit of a loner so chances are she'll leave anyone she is accompanying once they reach a town or sheltered area of some sort where she is sure they'll be safe.
Biography: Hale is both a gravekeeper and a shepherd. Or, was, rather. When she was around fifteen, during an extra hot summer, her town suffered a terrible drought and most people moved away, leaving her all alone with her sheep and her. The solitude didn't bother her much. In fact, she enjoyed it quite a bit. But Hale was no craftsman, and didn't really know how to keep buildings from falling down and wearing away. Time passed, and eventually, the village was nothing but rubble. Even the gravestone she tended to were worn down and barely recognizable. Hale, herself, does not know how many years passed- She had no way to keep track of time. Spring became Summer, Summer became Fall, and Fall became Winter over and over and over again, too many times for her to count. Her sheep, too, dwindled out until she only had three. Nowadays, the place where her tiny remote village used to be is a flat field of nothing, with only broken gravestones marking it's existence.
Misc: She is completely mute, and thus has to rely on facial expressions and gestures to get her point across.
She has three "Sheep" in her flock. Most folks see them as three normal white sheep until combat starts, in which case they will see them as they are. All characters controlled by people can indeed see her sheep in their true forms. They are Chia, Faunel, and Chop. These crimes against the living can only barely be described as sheep to be honest, but don't tell her that.
No, really, don't.
In addition to her flock, who will attack and take hits for her, Hale is able to cast some... Interesting spells. Her magic is shadow based and is heavily geared towards DPS. The most common use of her magic is conjuring hand like wisps of darkness that claw, tear, and pull at things. Hale does not have any support spells whatsoever. She does have low defense when it comes to melee situations, but is still plenty capable of dishing out damage with her staff.
She can re-summon her sheep when they die, but can only do so after a battle.
Hale knows where the remains of her village are by heart, and can easily lead anyone there if they ask her to. However, people who aren't her are probably better off staying far, far away.

So far, it had been a pretty long day. Travelling seemed less and less safe with each passing week, and today was especially brutal. Wild animals just loved to go after her flock, and she'd lost track of how many things she had to beat back today. Currently, the spoiled of her many victories were in her bag, which hung heavy over her shoulder, burdened by four freshly skinned mountain lion pelts. She'd already sold the meat she gathered from them a bit ago, although it wasn't much. The meat was tough and gamy, so it wasn't very popular. Still, money was money. She'd sold four pelts already, but couldn't get rid of the three in her bag. They'd been cured, at least, but she had yet to tan them. "That takes too long." It... Wasn't like she had anywhere she needed to go, per-say. It was just boring to have to wait around for something like that. As she walked up the steps and into the tavern, she gave the entire room a quick glance. Loud, boisterous as always. Unless you were in a ghost town, or one of those weird redneck church towns, a tavern was always where the most people would be. "And who can blame them?" She thought, taking a note of the odd people currently gathered. "If I was stuck in a place like this, I'd wanna get smashed every day too." Of course, some had to be travelers. But she wasn't a local so she didn't have a way to pick the people who lived here apart from the ones who were just visiting, other than the usual tell tale signs- Lots of bags, weathered clothes, that kind of thing.

A couple of folks stood out- Two super gorgeous girls, to be exact. They both were in different groups, each with a couple of guys. "Awe. I want long hair like that." Her gaze lingered on the one with blonde hair for a couple of seconds as she walked towards an empty table in the middle of the room. The necklace the blonde woman had on was really pretty, and Hale couldn't help but wonder about it. From this far away, she couldn't really see the details, but something like that had to be expensive. Perhaps she'd be a potential buyer? Hale made a mental note of the idea for now. Taking a seat, she took her bag off of her shoulder and hoisted it up on the table. Perhaps revealing the contents of what she owned wasn't very smart in a crowded tavern, but the shepherd tipped the bag over and lifted the flap, letting some of the stuff spill out onto the table. Most of it was just nick-knacks, but the pelts were fully visible along with an expensive looking set of carved dice as Hale pulled out a map and unrolled it, flattening it into the table. The path she'd taken so far was already plotted out, but here at this town, she'd reached a fork- There were two ways she could go, and she didn't know which one to pick. Both had their pros and cons, but she wondered if maybe there was a different route she could plan, even if it meant making her own trail. As she read, she used one hand to slowly pull the dice back towards her, so as not to get them stolen.

With her eyes on the map, Hale was just tuning out the argument taking place without a second thought. People fought in bars. That was just a thing. She was vaguely aware of someone talking to her, though, and pulling up a chair. But she didn't bother looking up just yet- She was really onto something, here. The moment her stuff was in the air, though, the three men had her full attention. The dice rolled onto the floor and disappeared into a puff of black smoke, appearing neatly in Hale's bag a second later. She seemed serene for a moment as she looked over the situation, looking between the man with the axe, the man with the flask, and the man who was defending himself with his sword. Then, she glared as she stood up, walked around the beaten up table, and reached out, placing her hand on top of the drunken lout's armed hand. "You're already dead." She thought, narrowing her eyes as wispy little tendrils of darkness began to seep out from beneath her hand, coating the man's and climbing all the way up his arm before he could speak.

If she wasn't mute, this was where she would drop some snappy one liner, or spout some worthless platitudes about beating up peoples in bars and ruining peoples days. Instead, the shepherd just raised her free hand and snapped, more than happy to watch her conjured shadows whip up like claws and embed themselves into the man's skin, digging in deep and mangling him beyond repair. In seconds, it was like his entire forearm had been through a blender. Like a shredder, the claws moved up until they got to his neck, and almost looked like a collar as they tore in. The man let go of the axe and clung to his neck, trying to save himself from the grisly end. It didn't work. Blood spurted all over, somehow miraculously missing both Hale and her buddy on the table. Hale watched as the man dropped to the ground and stopped moving, an annoyed expression on her face. All she'd wanted to do was go into town, chill out, plan her route, and get some sleep. And now she was a murderer. This happened way too often.

The patrons around the table were stunned, clearly in bystander mode. Not wanting to face their wrath when they left it, Hale quickly picked up her bag and threw her stuff back into it, but she was missing something... The map. Of course. It was under the pinned guy. "Uggh! God damnit." She reached down and tugged on it, but it was stuck fast. The shock was finally started to wear off of the room, and a particularly large and burly man stepped forward like he was gonna do something. "Screw the map! I'm out!" Hale thought with a look of panic as she booked it to the door and found it blocked by yet another man, who looked very angry. Not wanting to add another dead body to the situation, Hale did the first thing that popped up in her head; She kicked him in the balls. The man dropped to his knees and fell over, cupping both hands over his injured sack as the girl took a running jump and leaped clear over him, making a break for the stables. "Get the flock and get out, get the flock and get out!" Maybe she shouldn't have been so rash. Not that she felt bad about totally murking that guy, now she just didn't have a place to stay for tonight. Actions had consequences, though, so she just sucked it up and kept running.

Having made it out of the tavern, Hale stopped in her tracks as she heard a weird laugh echo throughout the building. What the heck was going on? It certainly didn't sound human, and she would know. Her forehead began to burn, and she wondered if maybe she'd been cursed. "It's always one thing or another..." She thought, scrunching up her nose and she rubbed her forehead, hoping to make it feel just a bit better. There were obvious signs of fighting going on, and by the sounds of it, it wasn't just a normal tavern brawl. Hale wasn't exactly keen on being some big white knight, but whatever foes were inside were not human. That meant that she ought to stay, just on principle. Silently, Hale fished around in her bag for her dice, not wanting to waste time running to the stables when there was an actual fight going down. It didn't take long, her dice always managed to find their own way to her, in the end. Drawing them out, she held all three in her hand, ready to toss them, right as one of the men from before came flying out straight through a wall. And her survived. Hale was almost a little impressed, until a demon- Yes, a demon, lunged and pinned the man into the mud.

Her gaze visibly hardened as she tossed the dice at the creature, watching coldly as the dice dissolved into clawing darkness, pushing the demon off of the man before forming together into three pools of shadow around it. The shepherd walked forward and knelt down, placing her hand on the guy's back. He'd definitely gotten his a** kicked. "I'm no healer... But..." She had to have something in her bag. A poultice, maybe? As her flock rose from the shadowy pools, Hale dug into her bag once more, but to no avail. Looking towards the massive hole and how many demons were in there, she frowned and stood up, setting the bag on the ground. Hopefully the guy would get the right idea. And hopefully she didn't get her stuff stolen. But at this point, she was more focused on the battle anyway. Calmly, she waited for her sheep to finish mauling the demon- They always took their sweet time with demons. There was just something about demonflesh that her sheep loved. Two more demons came from the hole in the wall, and Hale just stared at them for a second, tilting her head. They had no idea who they were messing with, here. She was the Shepherd, and all demons would become food for her flock, one day.

There was no hiding the big grin on her face as she took her staff from her back, ready to let loose. If these guys really thought they were worth fighting, then she'd just have to humor them, wouldn't she? With Chia, Faunel, and Chop preoccupied with their meal, she was stuck fighting these two demons alone. Not that it made much of a difference. Demons were, and would always be, nothing but fodder. One lunged forward, and she swung her staff into it's stomach like she was going for a home run. It fell to the ground in pain, and she swiftly brought the ornate head onto it's skull, swinging with all of her might. Which was quite a bit of might, considering the fact that there was a sick sounding crack as the creature fell over dead, lying still. That made her body count two, today. Well, three, counting her flock's meal. The remaining demon looked stunned, and perhaps even a little scared before gulping and mustering a bit of willpower. Hale would've thought he was a bit brave for not running away, if not for the fact that while he was trying to summon his bravado, she was casting her signature spell. Her hand was cloaked in darkness, and she let the ball of shadow spill out and tumble to the ground, watching as the mass made its way over to the feet of the demon. It began to climb up, one clawed tendril at a time, like some kind of awful octopus. Each tore tore and pulled at the monster's flesh, and the demon fell to the ground in pain as the shadowy blender tore at it, thrashing and clawing at itself to try to get the shadows out. This only made the tendrils split up, something going deep into the wounds, while others climbed higher and higher, going for the eyes. The death was just as gory as the man's from the bar, if not more so. While the demon was still going through what must've been the worst pain in it's miserable life, Hale walked back over to the man and stopped in front of him, blocking his view of the shadow afflicted monster. Hopefully, by now, he'd be alright to stand. She had a friendly look on her face as she held her hand out, clearly intent on helping him up. "Something tells me, we've both had a heckuva day today."

With the man up and on his feet, Hale picked up her bag and looked through it. It seemed like he hadn't bothered searching through, and the girl frowned. The guy was still injured, then... He really shouldn't have gone back into the thick of the danger at all in her opinion, considering how easy it had been for him to get beaten up. During times like these, it was best to leave the fighting to the professionals. Looking towards her sheep, she clicked her tongue. Each one looked up and came over, finally done with their gory little feast. They trailed after her as she walked through the hole in the wall and surveyed the scene. The tavern was now full of demons, although by now quite a few were dead, at the hands of various folks. Since she hadn't been there for the start, Hale genuinely had no idea what was going on. A stray demon met her gaze and stepped forward in an attempt to intimidate her, clearly having no idea what it was up against. "Such cute little sheep, girl. A fine meal, certainly. Are you supposed be to little Bo Peep?" While the chosen would see her flock for what they were, most folks, this demon included, wouldn't know until it was far, far too late. Hale shrugged in response, a deadpan expression on her face. The creature took a second to chuckle, and that was all her sheep needed. They ran from behind her and bowled it over within seconds, with two ramming into it's knees while one jumped straight onto it's chest. Hale walked past the tangle of wool and limbs, looking a little grossed out as the sheep went to town, the monster screaming all the while. "Ew."

There was fighting all over the place, but the one spot that caught her interest was the bar- A girl was standing on top of it, one of the two that she'd envied for their long hair. She'd executed one demon, but that left her open for a hit from the other one. Hale frowned. "Nuh-uh, not on my watch." She thought, lowered her staff to the floor. As she did so, a dark black shadow beneath the demon welled up, vaguely in the shape of a hand. Swiftly, she whipped the staff up, and the inky darkness solidified and shot upward lightning fast, sending the demon straight into the ceiling, shattering some pretty important bones on impact. The hand like shadow dissolved, letting the demon fall down to the floor. It gave out a cry of pain, but couldn't move, not with most of it's spine crushed. Not bothering with the finishing blow, Hale turned around and looked elsewhere, bumping straight into a very tall, almost familiar demon. With a swing of it's arm, it knocked her straight into the wall with a thump, hard enough to make her wheeze. Ow. "Well, I can't dodge everything..." She thought, wincing. Holding out her staff, she channeled her power as the extra bulky demon advanced, clearly read to lunge. A circle of light appeared beneath it's feet, shining brightly before disappearing, leaving two wraith like black arms holding it's legs in place. The creature moved to take a step and fell forward, it's head at Hale feet. Glowering, the shepherd stood up and raised her staff, making sure the lower half was pointing down. She shoved the sharp point straight through it's head, executing it, clearly angry. The girl loved to fight. But, oh, did she hate getting hurt.

Character notes in an expanded sheet for convenience

User Image

Name: Hale Har Halli

Nickname: Shepherd

Age: 18, in terms of looks. Currently the oldest character, with her true age at about 3812, give or take a few months.

Gender: Female

Species: At one point, she was human. And she still is. There are just some... Shenanigans at play.

Alignment: Neutral Good

Special Abilities: Hale is exceptionally gifted when it comes to manipulating darkness, able to conjure up hand-like shadows that can shred through people and fling them around like it's nothing. She also has three sheep who follow her around, and whom she can summon on command with her dice. The sheep themselves tend to get caught up eating, especially when it comes to her favorite meal. Thus, the most important thing about them is that they offer crowd control and tanks to Hale's kit. Hale might not see her sheep for what they are.

Defense wise, she's naturally resistant to shadow, lightning and earth magic. Mindless undead also tend to ignore her if there are living targets around, although Hale herself isn't really sure why.

Hale cannot be enthralled or mind controlled in any way, shape, or form. Usually these attempts will be met with a sharp blast of pain.

Weapon/Items: Staff- While it is not needed to cast her magic, she can use it to extend her cast range and fortify her spells, making them stronger in the long run.
Obsidian Dice- A set of three triangular dice, Hale can use them once per day to summon her sheep to her position. The dice are soulbound and can't be lost.
Map- A leather map that's painted finely and appears to be in perfect condition, despite being rather old.
Mysterious Black Book- What could be written inside? Hale keeps it hidden away under lock and key.

Fighting Style: Hale goes all out regardless of who she is fighting. On her own, Hale will kill most things she is fighting with spells that make her enemies seem like they've been through a blender. When she is in a group, she takes on a more supportive role and peels for people who she thinks would die otherwise, smashing enemies into walls and flinging them away from her companions. She doesn't have healing spells or shields, although she can use a swiftly cast hand to destroy projectiles. Her staff can be used for melee fighting, as well.

Weaknesses: While she's quite the adept when it comes to fighting with her staff and shadows to dish out the pain, Hale does not take receiving it well. She is extremely weak against light, fire, and ice magic.

Height: 5'7"

Weight: 135lbs

Personality: Hale is pretty aimless in the long run, to be honest. She ventures without an end goal in a world that changes far too much for her to keep track of the days that go by. She goes with the flow of things and tends not to second guess what happens, easily accepting things that most people would have more than a few questions about. This proves to be pretty handy in quite a few situations, oddly enough- It allows her to think calmly in spots where most of her companions would be freaking the ******** out. Conversely, it also makes it easier for her to get bamboozled and tricked, although due to her terrifying ability to do damage this could wind up badly for the trickster.

History: (Just a little backstory on them and how they came to be. For canons, it can be pretty barebones. For Original Characters, please be in depth.)

Extra: (Anything else you'd like to add. If you are playing a canon character, please put a link to their wiki page here!)

Hale stood up slowly, still aching from the force of the blow. Hitting walls wasn't very fun. This whole thing was just a mess. People were either angry or full on accepting of the elf's plight. But they ignored the most important thing. The shepherd looked up at the girl stuck up on the wall and frowned, turning her gaze back to the rest of the room. Sure, saving some kingdom was cool and all, but maybe they should've set their sight on the things a little closer to home. She gave a little wave and then pointed back to the pinned girl, hoping to catch at least one person's attention, just to get a little bit of help, or maybe get the elf woman to undo whatever that magic had done. Without waiting to see whether or not anyone had actually paid attention, Hale walked around the bar and assessed the situation. She wasn't at all familiar with elf magic, so she had no idea whether or not they could just... Pull her down. Her frown deepened.

While she was caught up trying to figure out how to get the brown haired girl down from her magic prison, Hale's sheep had disappeared- Presumably to go finish off whatever corpses were outside. "They're too fat for their own good." She thought, shaking her head. "No wonder everything we meet wants to eat 'em." After she figured out how to get this person down, she'd have to go and check on her little wooly friends. Who knew what trouble they'd get into while she was gone? For now, it didn't matter. Hale reached out and grabbed the girl's foot. Although she had her doubts, she tugged on it to see whether or not it would give way. "If we can get anything we want, I want some damn help." She thought, looking a little annoyed.

Hale listened to the dwarf speak his piece, and let out a breath of relief. It was nice to know that other people felt the same way she did, even if she still didn't know what exactly was going on. Queens and demons, all of this was such a mess. Plenty of people promised such things, but they were empty without any proof to back said promises up. Her gaze was curious as the elf delved into her magic- Being a mage, it was almost second nature by now to know when someone was tapping into their spells. Moments later, the shepherd watched placidly as the other girl fell to the floor, released from whatever magic had been holding her prison. Was it possible that the elf wasn't well versed in her own magic? It was unlikely, in Hale's opinion, but not impossible. At least the elf apologized. But the excuses she gave didn't really put the shepherd's mind at ease. It just felt too vague. To top it all off, she referred to her queen as "the most powerful being in all the dimensions." Now that bothered her. If she was so powerful, then why did she need their help? Or anyone's, for that matter? It was entirely possible that the elf just viewed her leader with rose tinted glasses, though.

She walked around the bar and scanned the floor, listening intently to the conversation all the while. Since she was here and nobody really seemed to care about the fiasco that happened before all this, she figured she'd take advantage of it and retrieve her map. She rifled around, looking beneath broken tables and bodies until she found the high quality leather pinned beneath the body of one of the slain demons. Wrinkling her nose, Hale pulled it out from beneath him and furrowed her brow at the map's state. It was soaked to the core with demon blood and alcohol. A bunch had probably been spilled all over the place during the fight. Twisting and bundling it up, she wrung it out with all her might. Excess blood dripped from her hands to the floor, making even more of a mess. Her attempt didn't really do much for the map, though- It was less soggy, but still stained with a reddish brown color. And now her hands smelled god awful. "Ew." She wanted to complain more, but found herself paying close attention to Kilo's words. Wanting to bang the elf queen aside, he validated her worries- What kind of thing could capture someone that strong? Assuming that this whole thing was true and that it wasn't just some weird, overly complicated set up, then whatever they were up against was probably way out of their league at the moment.

Hale tossed the map onto the bar and wiped her hands on her cloak before taking a seat on top of the counter next to her map and surveying the room. All these people, brought here for one reason? It was a diverse group, for sure. If they were chosen, why? Did they all have something in common that made them better than other options? There were plenty of knights and grand mages out there who were just ripe and ready for adventure, and probably much better geared for it too. If she could speak, she would say as much. Instead, the best she could do was sit there, frown, and shake her head in response to the elven messenger. She couldn't even introduce herself, unless she showed someone the name that was embroidered in her cloak and they read it out loud for her. At the very least, she hoped that her answer was clear. For now, it was a no from her.

Sitting calmly on top of the bar, she watched some random kid walk through the door of the tavern. Hale figured something was off, since he ignored the massive amount of bodies on the floor and made his way to the bar, somehow managing not to trip over the things he didn't seem to the see. Her suspicions were confirmed when he proceeded to order food from what appeared to be thin air. Ah, people. Noting the green mark upon his forehead, the mage frowned. Did Titania really need help from people this crazy? She had to be really desperate. "This... Just makes less and less sense..." But it moved her. At this point, Titania's party of chosen seemed kind of... Less than capable. A few people stood out when compared to the rest, but it wasn't enough. Two or three people couldn't carry a team. She mulled over it as the guy walked over to a table near the rest of the group, one of the few left intact, and questioned them about what they were talking about. "I change my mind." There was no way she could keep a clear conscience if she let these people take care of this all on their own.

The elf woman was kind enough to take pity on the addled boy and explained what was going on while Hale reached into her bag and ran her fingers over her dice. They vibrated with dark energy. Her sheep had clearly finished with whatever they were doing outside, and had gone to rest, but not without warning her about a little tagalong. Seemingly unaware of the threat beside her, she continued to rifle around in her pack. The fur of the pelts inside felt soft, and she wondered if she ought to just dump them somewhere to get rid of the burden... Then again, if she was gonna travel with these guys, she could give them out. It wasn't like she needed them to stay warm or anything. Without even looking up, she leaned a little bit to the right to avoid getting hit by the chair the crazed guy threw towards the bar. Once she'd touched her dice, she'd known about the mindflayer that had come inside with the young man. It was his own trash to clean up though, so she stayed cool and casual while the boy went all out with destroying the creature with some flashy skills. He spoke his piece, ending his introduction with a shout telling people not to call him an angel. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind until he mentioned it, but now, it was the only thing she wanted to call him, just because he'd said it so loud. "If I could talk..." She thought with a frown as she hopped off the bar and walked over to the elf woman.

Placing one hand gently on the woman's shoulder, she gave her a nod of agreement along with a friendly smile and let go. Hoping that the action had conveyed her agreement, Hale walked out of the tavern and sat down on a bench near the building. The bodies that had been outside were gone, definitely the handiwork of her sheep. Leaning back, she let out a long sigh. There was no taking on something that could defeat an "all powerful being" with such ease, at least not right out of the hat. They were in it for the long crawl, but where would they start? If the queen's stronghold was taken, then they couldn't start there- That was probably where the strongest things were. Maybe they could just quest around a bit together, see who clicked and who clashed, like Lena had suggested? There were plenty of options, but night was going to fall in like four hours. If they wanted to travel, they needed to get a start soon.

From her bench, Hale watched a few folks walk out of the bar. First, the blonde woman with the fancy choker. Then, the elf and the lady who was like fire. Not so long after, there was a boom of lightning, and the angel boy came out second to last, followed closely by the man with the dagger who was very clearly upset. "Rest in peace, door frame." Hale thought as she stood up, frowning. Electric laser? So that was what that sound was? This kid was not only crazy, he was also dangerous and seemed to have a hair trigger. She walked over, positioning herself between the angel and the rest of the group who had already come out, listening intently as Kilo spoke his piece. He made a very good point, and she nodded her agreement in his direction before fixing Penn with a glare beyond what the living could do. Raising one hand, she pointed to her left eye and then at him, making it very clear. She was watching. If he had to group with this jerk to make sure he didn't try to hurt anyone else, she would. It wouldn't be fun, but somebody had to do it. And who better than a shepherd, to guard and watch over the flock? It was just a shame she couldn't talk, otherwise she'd go out of her way to call him his most hated nickname at every step of the journey. Oh well.

The guy who'd had a near death experience with lightning seemed like someone worth listening to. But Lena was a nice person, and Hale really didn't want her to get hurt by this psychotic lightning spewing loser. Or anybody who wound up travelling with Lena, really. Truth be told, Hale just wanted to 'vote him off the island,' if you will. But the elf didn't seem like the type to say no to help, even if it was the kind that would potentially electrocute you to death if you said the wrong thing. So, she made her choice- She'd just travel with Lena, since there was no way Penn was going with Kilo. It would just be safer that way. Still keeping herself between the angel boy and Lena, she turned to her and smiled brightly. Figuring that someone like Lena could read, Hale picked up the left edge of her cloak and held it up, showing off the pretty embroidery. Written in silver thread was her name, clear as day. After a couple seconds, she let the edge fall. It didn't really matter whether anyone knew her name or not, to be honest. Not to her anyway. She'd just as soon answer to a 'Hey you!' than a 'Hale, what's up?' Simmering down a bit, the mage put her hand in her bag and pulled out her three black dice, idly rolling them back and forth between her hands while she waited. For what, she didn't know.
