After that last mission, Terry figured he ought to practice more with his weapon. Or rather his best offense being a great defense. He could ask Kim but he wanted to work on his skills with someone else so he could surprise his girlfriend on his improvement. And if it turns out he regressed since getting promoted he was much more comfortable losing to an acquaintance. But for now, he would suffice with summoning his shield and hurling himself at a training dummy.
To no one's surprise, the dummy was winning.

Now that the sun was back out the days somehow felt like they were getting longer even though it was winter and technically days were supposed to get shorter. Being in a tropical region, though, and living on a tropical island....winter wasn't exactly a season they experienced. Still, it was kind of confusing and it threw off his body clock a little bit. But he was adjusting, slowly but surely, to working under the sun. Like today, Rhys was out and about on the sparring grounds, looking to maybe spar if he got lucky. If not, the dummies were always available. Zephira, though, was anxious for a spar for some reason or another. She'd been on edge lately and he couldn't quite figure out why; asking was supposed to be an option, but he had a feeling she would ignore him anyway so he didn't bother.
Instead he did what he thought would be most amusing for her, or at least what he thought would get her attention and hopefully calm her down: going out to look for spars. The Shadow Run was also an option, but he didn't much like doing that run on his own. So there he was, meandering until he saw a figuring going up against a dummy. For whatever the dummy seemed to have the upper hand...somehow...so he approached. Upon realizing it was Terry, he smirked. Seemed as good a chance to try and get a spar out of him; he was a familiar face so he had a feeling he wouldn't need to be quite so in-your-face about it.
"Dude...you alright?"

In spite of all of Agata's encouragement, Terry just was just not getting anywhere. It was a stationary object. How was he having such a hard time dealing with it? After what was more proof that depth perception was something Terry has an issue with, the intermediate Life sort of just gave up.
Thankfully the rain had stopped at this point, so when he was face-down on the training field, he at least didn't risk drowning. He was ready to call it quits at this point, up until Rhys arrived.
Slowly, almost robotically, Terry turned his head so he could look at the other man. "Yes," he answered, the monotone bereft of any suggestion of sarcasm or humor. "My pride on the other hand."
He left it at that.

He still had a hard time dealing with the monotone, but he snorted at the pride comment. "C'mon," he said, offering the man a hand up. "Not sure what the ******** you could be doing wrong that you suck against a dummy, but a moving target might change that." For better or worse...for the guy's sake he hoped better. "I'll be that moving target. Been looking for a spar for a while now, lucky I found you."
Or not. He wasn't sure if the guy was a tough fight, though judging by his results with the dummies... Eh. He'd be fine.
"Get up, stretch out and let's get started."

Terry would have protested against the offer. Had he been the vocal sort. This wasn't a mission that he could over-prepare for and thus had no sound arguments to use and justify why he so deserved to stay down. Instead he mentally whined to his weapon that he didn't want to do this, to the point even Agata called him out on being a little brat.
"The dummy has warmed me up for you," he said, accepting the assistance to his feet. Then he added, "Well, more of the ground." And as he gestured to the field with his shield bearing arm, he accidentally clipped Rhys.

The clip was met with a silent swear, but it seemed unintentional enough that he left it alone...
"Cool with me," he said as he quickly got a little bit of a stretch in before summoning Zephira. He stretched a little bit more, nearly hitting Terry in the process. It was hardly on purpose, and in fact Rhys didn't even notice, and instead once he was done with his stretches hopped back a few steps to put some distance between them.
"You ready yet?" he asked as he got into a proper fighting stance. Zephira was egging him to just run in and get started, again going on about FEAR and just wanting more of it for some reason or another.

Terry dusted himself off as best as he could, not that there was reason considering he would most likely end up flat on his back or a** soon. Given the weapon Rhys wielded, Terry couldn't help but reconsider taking him up on his offer. It was too late to refuse now, at least not without looking like a dummy himself.
"I believe you are at an advantage?" Terry stated, getting into a defensive stance instead.

Rhys considered the question and eventually shook his head. "Might depend on how you used your shield?" he offered before dashing to close the distance between them. He overestimated how far Terry was, though, and wound up swinging just two seconds too late, missing the Lifer entirely. Zephira, likely having learned a thing or two from him, let out a slew of profanity-riddled insults at him for the mistake.
"Defend until there's opening kinda thing?" he went on despite missing, though. It was a friendly spar, meant more for learning than just strictly winning or losing.

The intermediate life trainee nodded, bracing himself for impact. But when there came none, his instinct to overthink the situation was overridden by his weapon.
"An opening like this?" Terry asked, taking a swing of his own, the teeth of his shield digging at Rhys' torso. Or the FEAR shield portion of the other man's torso.

Rhys grit his teeth at the sudden impact from the other hunter's weapon. "Exactly like that," he said, but saw an opening as well and swung upwards in hopes of dealing some serious damage given the proximity.
"Or like this," he went on as he felt his blade cut into Terry's shield. Once his attack was done he hopped back to put some distance between them again, sword still at the ready. "That was good though. More like that and you'll do fine out in the field."

Terry didn't have the necessary reaction time to properly respond to Rhys' attack. He felt the blade slice into him rather than just his FEAR shield and he will never get used to that feeling and not expect to see blood. It was all he could do not to pat himself where the other hunter's weapon had connected, believing it would make him look all the more inexperienced on the battle field.
The life hunter wished there were more characters who fight with shields that didn't involve throwing the damn thing because he was no Captain America or Crusader from those videogames. No arm strength to speak of and given Agata's shape, she wasn't aerodynamic enough for that either.
He instead swallowed and nodded, "Duly noted." And without missing a beat leaped forward and treating his weapon like a battering ram.

Rhys did his best to deflect the blow with Zephira, but a shield versus sword in a battering ram situation...the shield obviously had the advantage. He felt Zephira dig into him rather severely as a result, at least until he managed to sidestep out of the way. The ache where she'd pressed into his shield was distracting enough that he swung almost carelessly, just so he could keep Terry away and give himself time to recover.
"Fast learner," he said through a grimace. "That's a good thing, just makes me wonder how in the hell you were losing to a dummy before I got here."

"It was an S-rank dummy?" Terry offered as a way of explanation, even if there were no such things as S-rank dummies (at least none that Life has put forth beyond lab testing that he knew of anyway). He did, however, acknowledge that when it came to distance and reach, he was at a clear disadvantage against a sword.
Which was why he was trying to stick close to Rhys, not even the least bit concerned about the lack of proximity between a lanky twig and big bara beefcake. Besides, they were both in a relationship, nothing homo-erotic about literally throwing yourself at another guy, right?

The brunette snorted at the idea of an S-rank dummy as he tried and failed to connect with his next slash. The closeness that Terry was trying to maintain put him at a slight disadvantage, but it was good practice for future instances out in the field so he didn't mind at all. Instead he took his lumps and tried to keep just a little more distance between them to even the field some.
"My a**," he eventually replied through a smirk, "but you'd know better than me I guess, being you guys are the ones that put those things together."
