Autumn was well underway. The leaves had all begun their changing. Most trees were now a beautiful shade of red, orange or gold. The colorful foliage had even begun to cascade from the branches like petals and painted the sidewalks in their multitude of hues. The gentle sound of dry, crunchy leaves could be heard underfoot as people walked the littered sidewalks. It created a crisp and somewhat inviting atmosphere to the busy streets of Destiny City.

Normally, Rowan would scoff at such lack of care in such a prestigious district. Leaving leaves laying around wasn’t the best way to impress customers after all, but the atmosphere was mildly nostalgic. There was just something about being bundled up in a leather, waist-length jacket, a yellow scarf to ward off the chill from his neck and a pair of casual dress slacks. All was well tailored to fit his body just right. Even his boots, the tops hidden by his pants, were recently polished and on point. Rowan looked like a young man who had his life together and had money. Both of which, were very good assessments.

The young man has spent the entirety of the early afternoon meandering from shop to shop. Some purchases had been made and all of which would be delivered directly to his residence once the items were tailored to his liking. Of course, that meant Rowan was free of parcels and able to indulge in the coffee he had procured for himself at a local shop. The warm liquid in the cup made for a lovely hand warmer. Both hands were wrapped around the vessel as Rowan window shopped, looking for anything else of interest.

He paused at a jewelry shop. Displayed within it’s seasonally decorated windows were a collection of mens and womens watches. “I could use something a bit dressier.” He remarked quietly to himself as golden eyes roved the collection.

Something more than wind rustled through the colourful autumn drifts at the edge of the sidewalk. The thin tabby cat blended in with the fallen leaves, ginger and copper. He might have been completely camouflaged, if not for the afternoon sun glinting off the dark metal of his front paw bracers, his dangling pendant, the ever-so-subtle star marking on his forehead.

This wasn’t Tomlin’s usual habitat. The leaf litter gave him leeway in his wanderings, a place to lurk in streets that were usually too pristine, too curated for an alley cat to traverse. He always relished a chance to travel to new places, see new things. Or more importantly in this case, new people. The guardian ignored the birds that fluttered in his wake as he stalked by. His bright eyes were fixed solely on the young man now paused at another window.

Tomlin had started his walk with the intention of scavenging some food, hoping for easier pickings in the nicer part of town, but somewhere along the route the shopper had drawn his attention. The guy had a cup of something, so there was a chance he had some food hidden away somewhere in those jacket pockets. A chance, too, that he could be influenced to drop a few crumbs. At least that was the conscious justification for Tomlin’s interest. The rest was just a feeling, and he wasn’t ready to put it into words yet.

There wasn’t anyone else nearby. The cat extracted himself from his temporary hide and crept closer, until he was almost underfoot, tilting his head to fix a copper-eyed stare on Rowan, examining him as he watched the watches.

“Why?” he asked, voice soft. “Time’s the same on a plain clock.”

So engrossed in the window display, Rowan didn't realize the voice had actually originated below him as opposed to the side. With a chuckle he shrugged, "I suppose you're right, I..." He stopped mid-sentence when he looked to his left and found no one there. A quick look to his right showed no one on that side either. Confusion was written on his face as he glanced towards the entrance of the store to make sure he hadn't completely missed a person there. "Strange." He muttered as a hand rose up to rub at the back of his neck.

He shuffled to the side slightly to give the sidewalk another glance when he felt his leg brush up against something. Immediately the young man looked down and found himself staring at a pair of copper eyes attached to an orange body. "Well look at you." He commented to the feline. Shifting his feet so there wasn't a chance of him kicking the tom cat, Rowan bent down and offered the feline a scratch behind the ear.

"I don't suppose you know who I just heard, hm?" He questioned the cat jokingly. He thought he was over being ill from the spider bite. The voice certainly had sounded real enough though. And didn't have that peculiar timbre to it that he'd come to associate with his hallucinations.

"So, do you have an owner, fella?" Rowan felt around for a collar or some sort of identification.

Tomlin settled himself on the pavement, watching with faint amusement as the young man searched around, looking every which way but down. The shiny boots should have worried him, so close, but they barely nudged him, and the human noticed him before he needed to move out of stomping range. He seemed… approachable, Tomlin thought. A cat person. He held his ground, waiting for Rowan to put two and two together. But it seemed he wasn’t going to. Tomlin couldn’t see any sign that the human took him for anything but a normal cat.

It had been some time since anyone had scritched his ears like that. A long time since he’d let anyone. His eyes half-closed as he leaned into the touch, observations and suspicions momentarily taking a back seat to simple feline enjoyment.

He didn’t resist when the petting hand moved to his neck, tugging on the thin leather cord that hung there. The little copper moon charm on the end spun gently when it was lifted away from the white patch of fur at his chest. If the other was looking for an ID tag, Tomlin thought, he was out of luck. Save for the dents and scratches of alley life, the pendant was unmarked. Dog-tags were for dogs. And so were owners.

He cracked one eye open at Rowan’s words, regarding him for a moment before turning his head away, his tail giving a huffy flick.

“No,” he said, “Do you?”
