Quote:
Recent rainfall has kept temperatures cool but one of the parks can’t handle all the water draining into it. The water has turned it into a strange swamp and, in addition to the terrible smell, people have claimed to see strange floating lights—or, weirder—a strange, hulking figure that seems right at place in the swamp. Some have described it as being seven feet tall, covered in moss and weeds and mud and who knows what else; while no one has been able to confirm this, if you venture too close you might wind up observing something strange, yourself. The park no longer feels safe and if you wander too close you may feel hateful eyes upon you. You may even wind up chased out by a monstrous swamp monster, but if you try to approach him or interact otherwise, he seems to disappear. It’s probably best just to stay away from the park until the water dries up, just in case.

This was not, ordinarily, the sort of thing Sunny would end up doing with her night; but she'd earned a little cryptid-spotting, or if she was honest with herself, a little dead-body-searching. People turned up dead a lot in Destiny City - a disgusting and impromptu swamp would have made a good place to hide bodies, at least until it was eventually dredged, at which point...the bodies might have been too decomposed? She didn't really know a lot about dead bodies, and she didn't much care to learn. That would have required either looking at a lot of dead things, likely mammals, or getting hands-on with those, which. Ew. Gross? Her interest in science didn't lie in forensics, it laid in quality of life improvements; a dead thing didn't have much of a quality of life to speak of, and that was even before you got to the smells and the textures and the knowledge this was alive once and now it's not, it will never wake up again - well. She made sure dead birds she found were placed somewhere a little safer to decompose, never touched them with her bare hands, and felt that was leaving well enough alone.

If anything, really, her biggest concern was the woman she'd seen determinedly heading into the swamp ahead of her, without even some sort of mask or kerchief to cover her nose? That was irresponsible! (And even worse, coming from a pretty girl! The sheer astonishment of it was off the charts.) So out of what was absolutely a sense of responsibility and genuine worry and absolutely not anything else, Sunny jogged after Mirielle. "Wait up!"

I SAID I WOULD START THIS LIKE FOUR DAYS AGO, whoops

Mirielle knew that it was foolish to go poking around the swamp, but what was she supposed to do, really? Stay away from a unique and fascinating scientific anomaly? That would be just ridiculous. So there she was, in clothes she'd decided arbitrarily she could afford to throw away, starting to wade into the swamp, because if no one was going to try and find a specimen of whatever was causing those strange lights, frankly, she would do it herself.

Even if it felt very distinctly creepy, and she swore there were eyes on her. Malevolent eyes.

Mirielle resolutely ignored them. Science was being done, damn it.

She was surprised to hear someone calling out to her, and it made her straighten and turn to face the...very, very tall, very, very pretty woman who had called out.

"Uh!" She said, "were you -- did you mean -- wait up me?" She pointed at herself, like a giant idiot.

"I mean." Abruptly, Sunny looked entirely sheepish, almost wringing your hands. "There's nobody else around trying to do something like walk into the swamp, so. I'd hope I mean you? Or we'd have ghost problems or something on our hands, and I don't know how to fight a ghost. Not that I'd want to." She bit her lip and looked aside for a second, pondering the merits of ghostfighting in every method of media she'd ever seen it in. Ghostbusters seemed like it'd probably be ineffective, here. "Really, though, why are you going in there? And besides that, you don't have anything to protect your nose from the smell."

Sunny rustled around in her messenger bag for a second or two, frowning, until she seemed to find what she was looking for and pulled her hand out with a bag of cheap surgical masks hooked onto one finger and a bandanna on her pinkie. The surgical masks were all entirely generic (considering they were probably four bucks a pack, that wasn't a good suggestion of quality), but the bandanna was patterned with black-and-white hexagons and was fraying a little at the ends. "Here, take whichever one you want. It's super rancid in there, and if we're going to be going swamp-spelunking we should at least pretend to take health precautions."

In the time it took Mirielle to respond she shifted from foot to foot, a little anxious, afraid she was coming on too strong. (Mostly she was just trying not to Loom. It took considerable effort, sometimes.)
