Prompt
Walking anywhere at night can be risky in Destiny City, but tonight it’s not being attacked by some punk in a strange outfit. The squeaking above you is a dead giveaway that you’re not going to have a good night. Perhaps you remember the flock of bats that swarmed down on Destiny City last year; if you’re lucky, this is your first time being attacked by one. Thankfully it seems like a lone bat has made its way out of whatever cave they’ve moved from, but this thing is giant. It has a six foot wingspan. Does the bat fly away without harassing you? Do you fight it? If it scratches you, you walk away fine, but if it bites you then you can expect a rough time. Being bitten by these bats leaves two small marks that will itch for a few hours. Then, exhaustion and fatigue sets in and you become extremely sensitive to external stimulus; skin feels like it becomes overheated in sunlight, bright lights are painful to the eyes, and smells and sounds can seem overwhelming. The victim will feel constantly cold and hungry, no matter how much they eat or drink. They may also be prone to agitation and bouts of violence. These afflictions may last only a few hours or a few days and then suddenly disappear.

Caer did his best, generally, to not spend too much time out at night if he wasn't with Salem or powered up - he knew he made a tempting target for draining, a gangly, skinny teacher, and also too much time in the cold or just around people in general seemed to, well, not be good for him. He took a lot of immune boosters, but whatever he did, he spent more time sick than he would have liked.

Such was, it seemed. Some people just weren't good at being...not sick. Apparently.

Generally, though, he tried to be home early, but sometimes there was just so much to do, and the days were getting so much shorter...

He heard a strange rustling above him, and turned, and yelped. At first he was sure it had to be a youma, but it was just...a bat? A huge bat, monstrously oversized, that swooped down on him, and he threw up an arm to defend himself, which seemed to make it angry, because he felt teeth sinking into his skin through his sweater.

He let out a loud,s tartled yelp and powered up, swinging his bow around and whacking the bat on the nose. It made an offended screeching noise and flew off, and Caer was left shaking, trying to ignore the terrible itch on his arm.

He ran the rest of the way home, and he was fine at first, just itchy, so he hadn't bothered to say anything to Salem because it was weird but...he'd probably just run into a stray youma and there was no real harm done.

Except now he was...tired, could barely gather the energy to keep his eyes open.

"Salem," he said, tiredly, "I don't....feel great."

"Hmm." He grunted when his name was first called, though he rolled his eyes when his boyfriend stated he didn't feel good. "When do you ever feel good Caer..." Salem muttered quietly, running his fingers through the man's hair. "Do not answer that question." He ordered.

Though now that he thought about it, Caer did seem to be acting weirder then normal. The smaller man seemed to flinch at every sound or touch. He had gone out of his way to make sure his eyes were covered, as if trying trying to hide from the lights in the room and Caer was constantly
readjusting the blanket that was on top of them.

"What's the matter." He asked, sliding his hand against his boyfriends head to check for a temperature. "Did something happen while you were out?"

Caer opened his mouth to answer, but fell silent when Salem indicated it was rhetorical. Something in him wanted to snap back, to say that it wasn't like it was his fault he was sick all the time, but he shoved the urge down, because picking a fight with Salem was the last thing he wanted to do.

He shivered, pressing closer to Salem to leech more heat from the other man. "I'm...cold, and I feel more tired than I should and...I'm hungry, and also everything is really, really bright, can we...maybe turn some lights off?" That seemed like a fairly reasonable request, really.

"I think I ran into something weird on my walk home...a really, really big bat? I know, it sounds ridiculous."

Salem's fingers moved from Caer's hair, to his neck, rubbing at it gently. "Means you're gonna have to get off me and stop leaching my body heat." He mumbled, already pulling himself out from under Caer to turn off some of the brighter lights in the room till it was lit at a dull glow.

Salem made a small noise as he returned to his boyfriends side. "A bat? What did the bat do?" The taller man pulled the blankets tighter around Caer, and considered getting one of the heavier ones from the bedroom.

Caer groaned unhappily, but sat up, burritoing himself tighter into the blanket while Salem shut off the lights. "Thanks," he said, once the illumination was dimmed, "that's...much better." He opend his eyes partway, much better able to deal with the diffuse glow in the room than whatever had been going on before.

He snuggled back up against Salem once the opportunity was offered. "It, uh, bit me," Caer unhappily extracted his arm from the blanket burrito, rolling up his sweater sleeve to show Salem the mark. "And that itched for a while but that's stopped and now I just feel like hot garbage."

"You let it bite you?!" Salem hissed. "Caerwyn. We talked about this. We trained for this sort of s**t." He snarled, turning his attention to the bite. How was he suppose to treat something like this? The young man growled slightly. "Did you treat this at all?" He asked, pulling out his phone and beginning a search, wondering if there were any more reports like Caer's. The green haired man snorted, rolling his eyes. "Have you met yourself? You are hot garbage." He muttered to himself

"Oh," Caer said sharply, sitting up and moving away from Salem in his sudden irritation, "I'm so sorry I wasn't prepared for a giant ******** bat on my walk home. Next time I'll make sure to never be in civilian form ever, I guess." He curled tighter in on himself.

"I cleaned it when I got home. I'm not stupid, despite what you clearly think, but it wasn't bleeding or anything by then, so." He grumbled angrily, scooting further from Salem and towards the other end of the couch. "And thanks for that, love you too."

"You should be prepared!" Salem growled. "I'm not always going to be around to keep your god damn a** in line or alive!" He snarled. "Who would you go running to then. Lord knows that bow of yours can't do much. Though its better then that damned sprig you had before."

Salem rolled his eyes and detangled himself from Caer. "Figure it out yourself then, if you want to be a d**k about it." He shot, waving his hand dismissively and turning his attention back to his phone. The green haired man then proceed to act as if nothing had happened. "It doesn't matter what I think. You seem to know what's best for you so I won't bother." Salem shrugged, his thumb flicking over the screen.

"Mhmm." He hummed nonchalantly. "While I'd be inclined to believe it, I highly doubt you do." He shot back.

Caer growled and pushed himself off the couch, clearly prepared to go storming off. "I dunno, maybe it isn't better," he said, though it was fairly obvious he didn't mean that.

He glared long and hard at Salem, forcing himself not to give in and start cuddling up and begging for more attention. It was fine. He was fine.

"If you don't want to help, maybe I'll just go to bed," he said. "I'm tired anyway."

Except...well. He couldn't stomp off and leave that unaddressed.

"Of course I love you," he said, "even if I am mad at you right now."

"You're probably right. At least with the sprig, you had the chance of triggering someones allergies." Salem taunted. "Beware the power of sneezing." He never looked up from his phone, and he didn't bother to hide the lopsided smirk on his face.

"I never said I didn't want to help. You're the one throwing a b***h fit. All I did was ask questions." His thumb kept moving, from the bottom of his screen to the top. "Let me know when you're done being a brat and maybe I'll help you."

Salem snorted quietly, leaning his free hand on the arm of the couch, and dropping his head into it. "I'm sure. Dunno why you're pissy with me though. I didn't do anything."

Caer huffed, nestling deeper into the blankets. "I..." He didn't actually want to go to bed angry, especially since that would mean going to bed without Salem, and Caer was, frankly, a cuddler.

"I just...think I need sleep. I'm probably overreacting. I'll be better in the morning." Still, he toddled back over to the couch and sat down next to Salem. "i'm sorry, I don't...know why I got so mad. I'm just. I feel really awful, Ale."

Salem hummed quietly, shifting his hand from one phone to the other. "Are you don't being a b***h about it?" He asked, draping his free arm over the couch. Salem's gaze flickered from his phone to his boyfriend as he studied him for a moment. It was rare that Caerwyn got mad. Though despite everything, Caer had never been mad with him before. He pressed his palm to Caer's forehead and frowned. He was warm, certainly... But Caer had been under the blankets for the last few hours. Salem couldn't tell if he was warm from the blankets or from a fever... "Lay down and go to sleep." He muttered.

Caer wanted to argue, but arguing wasn't going to get him anywhere and he was....so very tired. He let out a quiet sigh and stretched out, snuggling against Salem's side.

"Maybe move me to bed later," he mumbled, and then he closed his eyes and let himself fall asleep.
