Virell had nowhere he’d rather be than curled up with Nick after the whole Mirrorspace shenanigans, and in all the adrenaline and excitement and fun he’d been able to bury things that should not have been buried.
The difficult things, the things that hurt. The things he wished he could have forgotten about forever.
It wasn’t until very late in the evening, when they were lying in bed together and he was trying to sleep but his guilty conscience just wouldn’t let him. Truthfully, he’d been so caught up in the moment that it hadn’t quite registered that he should feel bad about going home with Nick.
But, after what they’d been through…he wouldn’t have wanted to be home alone, anyway.
He heaved a heavy sigh and pulled himself closer to Nick, resting his chin atop the man’s chest. His eyes were half-lidded and he was tired, but he could tell that Nick was still awake because he was still playing with his hair. “Hey,” he said after a moment of quietly pondering. “…How well do you know Carlee?”
They rarely spoke about Arias, and hadn’t ever discussed Carlee, but it didn’t occur to Virell that Nick wouldn’t immediately knew who he was talking about.

Nick hadn’t enjoyed much of being trapped and nearly getting killed…but he had enjoyed protecting Alya. It had made him feel good. Strong. Like he belonged. And now, after a nice night spending…quality time with the other blonde…they were just relaxing…and it felt so nice. So perfect.
He was starting to drift off to sleep, his one hand running its fingers through Virell’s hair when the other male spoke and yawning, Nick shrugged. “I mean, she’s there a lot…” He murmured sleepily, kissing the top of Virell’s head. “She’s…wait…what?”
For a moment, Nick wasn’t quite sure what he had heard, Virell’s words only half making sense to his foggy, sleep deprived mind. Carlee? The only Carlee he knew was…was Arias’s little sister…but how on earth would…
“…What Carlee are you talking about, Rell? I…I’m afraid that I don’t quite follow…”
He felt wide awake now. Wide away and a little like he had been run over by a truck. Or maybe two. …How on earth did Virell know Carlee?

Virell was quiet for a moment, still debating on how much there was to say. Ultimately, he wasn’t any good with keeping secrets, though. “Carlee Hunter,” he answered, lips pursing after he spoke her name. There was a faint twisting in his stomach that he recognized to be nervousness but the idea of keeping secrets was even more uncomfortable than lying. At least, to Nick.
At least, about this.
“She’s a Senshi. She was with me when I first awakened. We’re friends,” he murmured, trailing his finger over Nick’s chest in small, light circles. “…She saw you and I having dinner, once. She got mad at me. But,” he sighed heavily. “…I didn’t know you were dating her brother. She said she forgave me, but. I don’t know. I think I meant to talk to you about this before, but it slipped my mind until now.”
He hadn’t really been emotionally prepared for a conversation like this back then, but now that he was laying with Nick, listening to his heartbeat, in his bed…
He still didn’t want to be having the conversation. But if he kept it a secret for too long and Nick found out—if something got damaged between the two of them? He didn’t know what he’d do.
“…I told her I wasn’t going to see you again, because I didn’t want her to be mad at me, and I didn’t want her to tell him. I mean, I didn’t realize it was your Arias until she yelled at me. But…I don’t think I can stop seeing you. I didn’t even hesitate with tonight, I just couldn’t stop myself. I wanted to be here, with you.”
He’d wanted it so badly that it almost hurt. He didn’t mean to lie to Carlee, or to betray her, but his heart pounded for Nick in a way it hadn’t for anyone else. He didn’t want to lose that.
“She said she wasn’t going to tell him or anything though, so I’m sure he doesn’t know, but…”
These words didn’t feel write. Virell could hear himself talking, but he wasn’t entirely even sure if he knew what he was saying. Being out earlier had drained him and he wondered if he shouldn’t have written himself a script or something so he didn’t mess this up.
“…I was just thinking about it now, is all. I wondered if maybe she’d said anything to you.”

Nick was quiet for a long time, his pulse increasing as nervousness took over him. Carlee...had known for that long? Since they had gone to dinner? When had that even been? When he had hurt Virell’s feelings a few months ago? Had she known for that long…?
...Had Arias known for that long? She knew full wall that Carlee couldn't keep her mouth closed about anything...
His mouth felt dry and he couldn’t figure out which muscles to use in order to try and moisten his suddenly parched lips. He couldn’t say anything until that was accomplished...and that was proving to be more difficult than he could have imagined.
Finally, he let out a small squeak, which caused him to clear his throat and nod slightly. “I...see. No, I uh...she hasn’t said anything...to me...so you’re...a friend of hers, hm? I…”
Damn. Damn, Damn. Double damn. “I...don’t want you to stay away from me either...I…”
Nick closed his eyes, sighing heavily. “...I should really talk to Arias. Carlee...is a great kid but...she doesn't have much of a filter...I’m sure she’s already told everything and then some to her brother…”
There was no way he could bring himself to say ‘my boyfriend’. For some reason...that didn’t feel like the right term to use right now at all.

Virell’s eyes shot up to Nick, first because he was so quiet and then because of the squeak. The longer the seconds had ticked on, the more nervous he’d gotten, and when Nick spoke he was partially relieved and partially more concerned.
He had always trusted Carlee, but Nick probably knew her a little better. Or, at least, he knew how she interacted with other people. Carlee seemed trustworthy enough, and he had thought she would keep her word until Nick’s words hit him. He rolled them over in his mind for a moment before he looked at the other man.
“…Did I mess up?” Virell asked quietly after a moment. He had an unfamiliar nervous churning twisting in his stomach and he tried to chase the idea that he’d done something wrong out of his head. He swallowed and almost hoped Nick wouldn’t answer if he had screwed something up. “What are you going to say to Arias?” he asked; he didn’t realize he was holding his breath as he waited for the answer.

“No, of course you didn’t mess up.” Nick’s arm tightened around Virell, holding him rather possessively. “This isn’t your fault at all. You didn’t know…I…I didn’t know.”
…If he had known, he would have been better about keeping things secret.
With a heavy sigh, Nick seemed to slump against the pillows, all of the energy and contentment he had been feeling a few minutes prior snuffed out of him. “I don’t know what to say to Arias…but…he’s not going to be happy with me at all if he does know…he…”
Nick swallowed. “I had told him I would stop all of this. Stop seeing other people…I’ve been lying to him for months now…” He was a horrible human being…and he was worse for the simple fact that he didn’t realize how horrible he was until he was caught…
…and getting caught was what bothered him the most. “…******** a mess this was…and if Arias did know…the longer he let things drag on…the worse it would get. “…I’ll talk to him tomorrow, then.”

Nick’s reassurance was enough to make Virell remember to breathe and he melted against the grip but Virell couldn’t help but feel guilty.
Partly because he had waited for so long to tell Nick—though, to be fair, it simply hadn’t been anything that ever really crossed his mind until now.
No, he mostly felt guilty because of the fluttering in his stomach that wanted Nick and Arias to break up. Virell didn’t have as many emotional needs and he knew that if it was a competition of pleasure and fun and excitement, he could win against anyone Nick was seeing. The idea that Nick might wind up sneaking away every now and then to indulge in someone else didn’t really bother Virell—if it had, he wouldn’t have fallen in love with him while he was dating Arias.
Arias was a different sort of competition, though. Nick was with him because he loved him in a different way than Virell was used to, and even now he wasn’t sure he could really compete with it. If he could have, Nick wouldn’t have made it clear that he aspired for a relationship with Arias when Virell was trying to confess his feelings. His real feelings.
That were currently still bottled up because, as evidenced by the fact that a part of him hoped Nick and Arias would end things, his emotions were not exactly a good thing. Wanting more of Nick was selfish, and Virell had already worked hard to convince himself that he was perfectly happy with what they had.
He was quiet for a few seconds longer and then scooted closer. He reached for Nick’s hand and laced fingers with him as he rested his head against the man’s shoulder. “I just want you to be happy,” he said after another thoughtful moment. “If I can do anything, you’ll let me know, right? If you need anything, anything at all, let me know. Please,” he insisted. “…I really care about you. A lot. And I want to make sure you’re okay.”
No matter what happened, with who.

Nick’s arm tightened around Virell and he leaned down, kissing the top of his head once more. “Of course I’ll let you know if I need anything...or if you can do anything. I know that you want me happy...and I want to be happy too...you make me happy, Relly, you do know that, don’t you? Maybe I don’t tell you enough, but I rely on you a lot...you’re one of the brightest spots in my life…”
And he might end up being more than that if Arias decided that he wanted nothing else to do with Nick. “I’ll let you know what happens after I talk to him...but…”
He shrugged. “I’m not sure he’ll want to continue our relationship...and I can’t really blame him...I promised that I wouldn’t…so…I don’t know. I’m not sure what will happen…but I’ll think about that tomorrow, if that’s all right with you? I…we’ve gone through enough s**t tonight…and I just want to focus on how much I love you right now, okay?”

Again, Virell found himself relaxing when Nick spoke and kissed the top of his head. The knot in his stomach slowly unwound, replaced with the faint tickles of butterflies when Nick spoke.
He nodded and relaxed against Nick, just enjoying the closeness of his body and his words.
“I know I make you happy, and I know you love me. And you make me happy, and there isn’t anyone in this world that I would rather be with tonight. So…I know you made a promise to him, but…”
He scooted closer and closed his eyes. “I’m really happy I get to have you tonight. So I’ll focus on how much I love you, too. And no matter what happens tomorrow, I’ll still love you.”
