Personality: Oerlen would argue that, despite reports to the contrary, he doesn't actually light up any room he's in, but that's only because if he did shine as brightly as the sun, he would be difficult to look at head on.
That wouldn't do. Oer likes to be looked at.
He is full of himself but not selfish, gleaning his greatest joy from bolstering people who are down, even if they're simply putting on a temporary show of cheerfulness to get him to go away. Oer can be a bit blind to the many flavors of deceptive behavior in the world, and is easily duped because of it. Most of the time, however, he remains dupe-free for reasons that are not immediately clear. Maybe it's his size that intimidates swindlers before they swindle. Maybe it's his jovial nature. No matter the cause, fate has left Oerlen a little naive as he sets out into the world, a loud, infinitely approachable chap who does many things he shouldn't.
Positive Trait List: gallant, joyful, selfless
Negative Trait List: cocky, brash, oblivious
History: Twenty-one years ago, Journeywoman Lillis, Salt Water Fisherman of Tillek Hold, ventured to Black Sand with the intention of studying the island's aquatic ecosystem firsthand. She ended up studying a mousy local builder named Ursel as well, and a little over a year later they welcomed a son into the world, a boy as bright and boisterous as his mother.
Oerlen had an interesting, if mostly pedestrian childhood, his life the polar opposite of tragic. He grew up surrounded by his mother's fish stuff and his father's construction stuff, expressing interest in both while lacking investment in either. Ursel mainly helped to build and maintain the living quarters of many of the hold's citizens, though in his spare time he also put together a number of variations on a similar theme: humane traps for wild felines and humane ways to deal with wild pirates. Oer accompanied his father on many catch-and-release outings over the years, and with time grew familiar with quite a few effective methods for defending against both man and beast. He often joined his mother on her boat as well, learning the ins and outs of basic Fishercraft while he mended nets and cast lines.
One warm day at the start of his fourteenth turn, when neither of his parents needed him for anything in particular, Oer found his true calling, or lack thereof, perhaps. Curiosity set him wandering near the vacationers' huts, and before he could find a way to look busy he was cornered by a nervous gentleman and his daughter. They asked for directions to the nearest beach, and what followed was an entertaining traipse down the coast, culminating in a generous tip. It was the largest sum of money that the boy had ever earned, which wasn't saying much considering that he'd never been paid in his life. He kept up this ambiguous work for what remained of the summer, partially because of the money, but mostly because he genuinely enjoyed it. Oer liked sharing local lore. He soaked in the awe of his audience as he sidestepped a hidden crevasse or climbed a sheer-barked tree to shower them with fruit and nuts. He took pleasure in the sound of his own voice.
As the years passed, Oerlen deftly avoided formal Apprenticeship in favor of being a tour guide of sorts, and his parents turned a blind eye until he was almost out of his teens. Questions regarding his future increased the closer he got to his twentieth year, and he was feeling particularly desperate on the morning the Searchrider showed up.
Candidacy is nothing like he thought it would be, and while he's overwhelmed and slightly homesick, Oer is excited to explore a future that doesn't involve fish or stone.
Other: pls halp i will gladly rewrite stuff about black sand tourist trade if need be XD (and anything else, of course)
