Physical Description: A broad-shouldered, heavyset man, Nikohal has clearly lived a life of relative luxury--at least, in his later years. His black hair is cropped short, and his eyes are a deep green. He is a handsome enough man, with a roguish grin and a booming laugh. His face is often scruffy, for he does not shave as often as he should... but, if it's brought up to him, he'll just claim it adds to his charm!
Personality: With a wink and a grin for everyone he meets, there's no doubt that Nikohal is a charmer. The man is genuinely pleased to meet new people, engaging them in friendly conversation without any sort of hesitation or reserve. He can be a bit of a flirt, it's true, but if the other party isn't interested, he's more than happy to simply stick to talk! He has a good sense of humor, and it isn't hard to send him into roaring fits of laughter. Life is too short to not have a good time, especially now that Thread is back! Despite the belly he sports from being able to enjoy rich food and wine these days, he still moves with confidence. Why, even if someone were to try and jab at him about it, he'd probably just see it as a fine joke. Fat floats in water, don't you know--so it's perfect that he's out on the sea more often than not!
Nikohal isn't the sort to be a very quiet individual, boisterous and full of passion. Unfortunately, this leads to him talking more than he should, especially about things he shouldn't. Private bits of information he's been told in confidence just make such good conversation fillers! Don't tell him your secrets unless you're ready for them to get out! He doesn't ever do so maliciously-- he just talks without thinking, and the words spill out.
Despite how easy-going he is in conversation, once Nikohal has made up his mind on something, it is extremely difficult to get him to change it. Oh, he'll listen to arguments against it in an almost patronizing sort of way, but he's gonna dig his heels in deep and refuse to back down. Once he thinks he's come up with the best solution, he's convinced he's right--even if he knows nothing about the subject in question! This arrogant streak mixed with his stubbornness can make him especially frustrating to deal with, and he knows it. Best to turn the conversation back to lighter things, because he'd much rather that everyone be in a good mood!

History: He grew up in a small Hold close to the sea, one of three boys. His father was a shallow-water fisherman while his mother focused on raising the kids. The boys were expected to follow in their father's footsteps, and that seemed all well and good... until Nikohal saw his first dragon. The dragonrider had been hired to guard a ship, and said ship had come into harbor to trade with the Hold.
That was the first time in his life that Nikohal had thought about becoming a dragonrider.
He was fairly vocal about his thoughts, but his father had no intention of letting him leave to go stand at a Weyr. Useless things, Weyrs and dragons. A man was better making money and working for a living, instead of being enslaved to one of those creatures. Nikohal was undeterred, but found that he liked fishing very much! As he grew older, he and another boy in the Hold began to realize that they weren't attracted to girls... and so, with hormones taking control, romance quickly bloomed between them.
When he was 17 Turns, a dragon came to the Hold in Search, and Nikohal was found to be eligible to Stand. Delighted, he fully intended to leave, but his father pulled him aside. The man apparently knew of his son's "disgusting" tendencies towards other men, and harshly told him that if he were to Stand, he'd undoubtedly Impress a green dragon. Once that happened, he'd be little more than a whore, forced to sleep with the entire damn Weyr whenever they so pleased.
Badly shaken, Nikohal was too frightened to go, and adamantly refused. He continued to learn the art of fishing, and with hard work, became a Journeyman of deep sea fishing. It was an easy way to escape his family, and once he was able to, he set sail and never looked back. He owns his own craft now, The Golden Flitt, possesses a fine crew, and greatly enjoy what he does. To this day, he still looks upon his refusal to go to the Weyr as the right decision.... but, sometimes, he still feels a pang of regret.
