Name: Haukai
Age: 25
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: mostly bisexual
Weyr: Western Weyr
Rider Rank: Wingrider
Previous Rank/Craft: Journeyman Healer (Trauma)
Physical Description: At a scant 5'2", Haukai is not very curvy in build, more boyish than girly. She's quite physically fit, however, and stronger than she looks. Her dark honey blonde hair is cut short in back, with long shaggy floppy fringe in front that she's constantly pushing out of her face. She has a fairly strong chin and turned up button nose, enormous blue eyes, and fullish lips that can pull back into a warm, silly smile. Her complexion is fair with a smattering of freckles across her nose; she tends to tan rather than burn. For clothing, Haukai prefers simple tunics and trousers to dresses, though she does clean up nicely for Gathers.

Personality: Picture if you will the half-pint female lovechild of the doctors of M*A*S*H* and House MD. That's what you have in Haukai: a freewheeling, hard-drinking, insanely competent trauma healer. She loves the trauma specialty because it's fast-moving; you have to triage and deal with often life-threatening injuries as quickly and calmly as you can, then move on to the next one, and the next, and the next. This has been especially true since Thread returned, with its grim and grisly scoring. In that regard, it scratches the itch she has as an adrenaline junkie; this same itch also gets scratched by fighting Thread with Corymth and her wing.

And therein lies the conundrum: should she pursue trauma healing, or fighting Thread? So far, she is juggling both, and it's doing a bit of a number on her.

Haukai is one of those healers everyone loves to get. Her presence is calm yet filled with warmth and humor, sometimes of a slightly gallows nature. She comforts her patients, yet won't pull any punches; if things look bad, she'll let you know in no uncertain terms. Her friendly nature follows her outside the infirmary -- you won't find a better drinking partner than Haukai, for example. Thing is, the drinking doesn't stop when she leaves her friends. You could say it's something of a coping mechanism; it's an easy hop to Benden to get as much wine as she wants. And you can bet she'll drink it all. She knows it's a problem, she just doesn't care. It's the only way she can sleep at night.

Or relax in general. She doesn't allow herself much in the way of downtime, burning the candle at both ends as she tries to be both a healer and a dragonrider. When she's not on duty, she's either studying the latest medical techniques to come out of Healer Hall, or she's training with Corymth in order to catch up with the riders who Impressed with her. She feels hopelessly behind in both. It takes her dragon practically picking her up and dragging her out of her weyr and down to the beach to get any real relaxation time.

But all of this is kept very very close to Haukai's chest, especially the drinking. To almost everyone else, she's the joking, rollicking healer who rides the dark dark blue dragon. And that's how she wants to keep it.

Positive Trait List calm under pressure, warm and friendly, competent
Negative Trait List adrenaline junkie, drinks as coping mechanism, focuses too much on work

History: Haukai hails from a small cothold beholden to Fort, not far from Harper Hall. Ever since she was little, she wanted to be a harper in the worst way. At age 10 she auditioned for apprenticeship, only to discover she was tone-deaf. Not willing to give up so easily, she decided to try out for signal drummer, and after a difficult Turn of that she was sent home. Haukai was completely discouraged; her dream of being a harper had been thoroughly and brutally quashed. Her parents persevered, though, and randomly suggested she try out at Healer Hall, which is also at Fort. Reluctantly she agreed, even though she didn't feel she had the slightest interest or talent in the Healercraft. To her surprise, Hauki discovered that medicine was actually quite interesting! She became obsessed with trauma and trauma healing, and decided that was going to be her specialty. Excelling in her studies and practicals, she walked the tables as a journeyman healer at age 21.

Her first assignment was at Western Weyr, to augment the healer contingent there. She'd heard it was a rough and tumble place, and it certainly did not disappoint, throwing a wide variety of interesting injuries her way. Then one day a bluerider walked in with a broken arm, and as she was setting the bones he informed her that his dragon was curious as to why she wasn't with the other Candidates getting ready for the hatching a mere three days away. Before she could even comprehend what that meant, she was whisked away and presented to the Candidatemaster, who shook his head and took her under his wing to prep her as best he could on such short notice.

When the day came, Haukai was certain she wasn't going to Impress. She'd stand, she'd fail, she'd return to the infirmary and carry on as a healer. A little dark blue hatchling had different plans, though, and she found herself staring into the rainbow-whirling eyes of Corymth. Yeah, her life was upended again. But she wouldn't have it any other way. As Weyrling training went on, she and Corymth performed well, better than anyone expected in fact, despite Haukai having to catch up on all the things she missed by not attending Candidate training. Luckily she was allowed to continue her duties as a healer, though she now concentrated on her trauma specialty.

The day Thread returned Haukai saw more trauma cases than she had in all her previous Turns as a healer, some of them more grisly than she could have imagined. It seriously put her skills to the test, but she managed to correctly triage and save every single case of Threadscore that she tended to. And there were a lot of them; the infirmary was as unprepared as the rest of the Weyr was. Haukai was more determined than ever that Thread had to be stopped, but she was torn: she had sworn to save lives as a healer, but she was also now sworn to fight Thread as a dragonrider. Could she do both?

The question became moot, at least temporarily, when she got scored badly herself in her left thigh and knee while fighting Thread with her wing. She was out of commission for several months, at least as far as flying went; she stubbornly insisted on working in the infirmary on trauma cases. She has finally gotten back to fighting Thread, though she walks now with a limp and a cane. It doesn't affect her flying with her wing aboard Corymth, though, or with her work as a healer.

Other: Nameday: 3548.06.17

DRAGON
Name: Corymth
Age: 3, shelled 3570.11.11 from unaffiliated Sharath x Licerth at Western
Color: Blue
Size: 23'
Physical Description: Corymth is a small, snaky little dragon, with blue hide so dark it's almost black. He has white markings on face and shoulders, right leg and tail. His wings are long and pointed.
Personality: One would be hard pressed to find a more eager, enthusiastic dragon as blue Corymth. High-energy and friendly, he is almost as much of an adrenaline junkie as his rider. He loves to fly rings around the larger dragons, and he is as nimble in the air as some of the bigger greens. One would also be hard pressed to find a more dedicated dragon; he is fiercely determined when flying Thread or responding to an emergency, playing ambulance for his rider. Corymth is also a little blue welcome wagon to transfers from other Weyrs, greeting them with warmth and enthusiasm (and gifts of food). He loves his family; he's quite fond of his sire Licerth and his clutchmates, and has found a surrogate mum in gold Lyraeth. For fun and relaxation, he enjoys frolicking in the ocean and playing with firelizards, often browbeating Haukai into joining him during her infrequent downtime.
