Somehow she had gotten talked into spending time in town but since it was for her little brother she was fine with that. Subira would do anything for her sibling. Ever since he was born she's done everything she could to help protect him and make him happy as he grows. The young alkidike adored her earthling brother. So there she was, walking with him through town and getting all the odd looks from people around them. "So what did you want to do today?" She asked cheerily. Subira always wore a smile. Few people had ever seen her with a frown or any other expression. Unless it was her family seeing her in the morning when she was still half asleep. Her pure black eyes closed, almost mimicking the "fox eyes" look, as she grinned down at Eurig. "Mom gave me some coin so we can do whatever you want." Their alk mother usually spoiled them in such a way with the extra coin she made from her hunts. Unless Ariya was getting something for Ujana, then the coin was spent on her. Luckily this time wasn't the case. As she waited for her brother to answer her she took note of a small group of Alkidikes that seemed to be about her age, possibly a bit older. They were glaring and if Subira could put money on it then she would bet they were focused on Eurig. Despite that she kept her smile on her face and didn't let on that she had noticed their looks.

Eurig as on top of the world!
He loved trips into the settlement, even if they were just errands, because it was always something new. Sometimes travelers in strange clothes would pass by, or performers would set up a stage in the middle of the market. He saw all kinds of wind dancers that way when he stayed with his papa, but in Jauhar, it seemed like they got all kinds of people!
Sometimes they would come to his momma's tavern too, but since Eurig wasn't old enough to go near it he had to rely on the stories passed down to him. One day he'd be old enough to hear them for himself; to be there and see the world like the rest of his family. Today, though, he was thrilled just to be out and about with his big sister.
At first he didn't notice the strange looks. People always looked at him funny; a little leafling in a jungle dominated by warrior women and moon people. That was part of the reason why he tried to be so nice; people liked that better.
He paused in his walk to look up, grinning when he saw his sister's mischievous expression. "Sweet rolls. We should get a bunch of sweet rolls." Without noticing the less than favorable looks being passed their way, Eurig reached up to take hold of her hand. There was a familiarity in it that made the act look and feel natural to him; showing the world it was something he did as often as he could.

Sweet rolls it was. When Eurig took her hand she adjusted her hand to better fit his, a response that showed she was used to him doing so and didn't mind the contact. Subira smiled at him and nodded her head. "Mm, alright.Don't tell mom or mama though." She brought her other hand up to her lips as she made a shushing sound. After a giggle she dropped her hand back down and walked with him. Since her hearing was a little better than his she caught the sound of a hiss coming from the other alkidikes that were busy watching them. For now it gave her no pause but that did mean she would have to keep an eye on them. Subira didn't want them to mess up her little brother's day. "Which vendor did you want to get them from?" There were two that she knew of though one sold other foods as well. The older of the siblings continued to smile so that Euri wouldn't know anything was amiss.

The act only made his smile brighter. If he could really get as many as he wanted he wouldn't tell them anything! But...maybe he would sneak a few and surprise them. Only after he and Subira had their fill, of course.
Now that they were moving he was able to see the other alkidike, but thankfully he wasn't able to hear the hiss. They didn't appear to be too happy, though, so maybe their hunt didn't go well? He tried not to stare; it wasn't polite, and he wanted to focus on his sweet rolls, anyway.
"Can we go to....I forgot her name, but the old woman with the....with the...." He stood up on his tippy toes, wobbling for a minute as he tried to whisper, "...the chin hairs?"
The closer contact brought about an actual scoff from one of the younger alkidike. While her voice was still too low for Eurig to make out, she said, "This is why the Dretch came back. Why else would they be here if so many of our sisters weren't lowering themselves to play nanny to earthlings?"

As he got on his tip toes she leaned to the side even though she didn't need to. As he mentioned the hairs on the woman's chin she grinned and held back a chuckle. "Of course." Right after her reply she caught the words of one of the other alkidike and felt her antennae give an unpleasant twitch. "I don't mind the earthlings but I don't think our sisters should be so close to them." Said another in the group. Though her tone held disgust as she watched Subira. Not wanting to let her little brother hear the mean words she moved him along to where the lady with the chin hairs usually was. "How many did you want then?" Distraction was a good thing. Of course it wouldn't help for long since she noticed the group of young bugs follow after them. Apparently they were trying to figure out how best to address Subira and Eurig.

Awesome! She made the best baked goods in all of Jauhar, and Eurig couldn't wait to try them. He did...see the way Subira's antennae twitched, and while he would hear murmuring, he couldn't make out what the other girls were saying. Eurig wasn't positive what was being said, but he knew if he couldn't hear it, then he wasn't supposed to, so he tried to keep up a happy face.
"Mom says that the only reason some of our sisters mate with them is because there's something wrong with them and no other sister will take them." The words were said with a snicker, one that even with his less-than-alkidike hearing, Eurig caught.
"Subira...do you know them? They're following us." Eurig looked over his shoulder and watched as the teens kept up with them. It was making him nervous. The last time a group like that followed him it had been some shifter kids who weren't that keen on having him around. It was the first time he'd come home with a black eye, and Eurig wasn't looking to repeat it.

Inwardly she was glaring at the girls for their comment. There was nothing wrong with her mother, Ujana made a great partner for her. Subira didn't show it in her expression though since she worried about her brother. Then he asked her if she knew them and she knew that he had heard what they had said. So she looked down at him and shook her head. "No, Eurig, I don't." And even if she had she wouldn't admit to it. Not with how they were acting. "Oh look, the leaf brat noticed us." The girl from earlier said. "Is the wittle crystal freak scared?" It seemed now she wanted to taunt him both to make him afraid and to get at Subira. "Don't listen to them Euri. You're my little brother and I won't let anyone hurt you." Still the young alk wore her smile. She didn't want to let him see her without it.

"Oh." That...wasn't good. A part of him just wanted to believe that maybe they were curious, in a good way, about the pair and wanted to be friends. However, everything about their demeanor and that snicker told him otherwise.
Crystal freak? He'd never heard that one before, but it stung deep. Eurig tightened his hold on Subira's hand, moving to stand closer to her as if to hide from the group.
"Some man he is. I thought earthlings males had more pride than that, but look at him, he's hiding!" One of the alkidike elbowed her friends, then motioned towards him.
And what was wrong with that? Eurig wanted to listen to Subira; to close his ears and believe she could make it all better, but those girls were being awful loud. "C-can....can we go home?"

As he moved closer to her she moved to stand in a way that would shield him from being seen by the other girls. She hated that he was being made to feel bad by someone of her own race. "Didn't you want to get sweet rolls?" There was no way she was going to let the other alkidikes ruin this day for Eurig. "I know what they are saying is mean, but just remember that mother and I don't share their views." Subira gently patted him on the head before running her fingers through his hair. She still smiled at him, showing him that she was strong and that he could be too. The mean bugs were just making her want to prove them all wrong by having the strongest earthling brother and making sure he had the most loving family. The group laughed when the boy said he wanted to go home. "Such a baby. No wonder the earthlings are so weak." Alks typically believed they were the stronger race by default. They were taller. Had more discipline. And their senses were heightened. "We should give that one to the Dretch as an offering."

"It's okay, I'm not hungry anymore." Which wasn't entirely untrue. He still wanted them, but the physical hunger driving him toward the sweets had been vanquished by his unease.
He leaned into her touch, momentarily closing his eyes and blocking out the other girls. Eurig didn't see them as any different from himself; to him, they were just girls, so why did they have to point out the differences? As far as the leafling was concerned there weren't any, and he liked his way of thinking far better than theirs.
That didn't mean his was the loudest voice, however, and just because he wanted the world to be a little nicer that didn't mean it would listen.
"If only! They'd just throw him back."
That one got him. When Eurig opened his eyes again and looked at them he had a stern frown on his face. "Y-you shouldn't joke about that. The Dretch are real and scary. They've hurt people." He hadn't been there when the Dretch attacked, but evidently the scary bug mages had made their presence known everywhere, not just on Chibale.

She remained quiet for just a little longer. It seemed these girls, who didn't know what they were talking about in Subira's opinion, had ruined Eurig's apatite and now had even made him confront them directly. Something she knew he wasn't always comfortable with. So she shook her head at him. "You shouldn't respond to their mean words." Although that completely contradicted what she was about to do. Subira gave her little brother a pat on the head and motioned for him to stay put. Then she turned, still wearing her smile, to face the group of girls that were taunting him. "You know, you should really stay home if you intend to ruin my little brother's day." The young alk moved toward them, making a direct line for the on that had mentioned giving Eurig to the Dretch. "I don't like it when others make him sad." Subira's smile grew wider but there was something off about it. There was no genuine feeling behind it. When she was within range she struck out with her foot. a quick motion that sent her heel right into the jaw of the alkidike and caused her to spit blood. The girl that got hit stumbled and tried to recover after the surprise and the others stared for a moment before glaring at Subira. "You'll pay for that!" It looked like the usually cheery Subira had started something.

"Sorry." Eurig knew he shouldn't give fuel to the fire of their words, but it was hard not to. They were being so mean, and he....he just wanted them to go away! He still stood tall, or as tall as he was comfortable with, without backing down. Even if he was nervous around them Eurig wasn't taught to back away; once he chose to speak he knew he'd have to see it out.
He stayed where he was supposed to, moving his hands infront of himself and intertwining his fingers with one another. Even if he wasn't sure what Subira was up to, something about the way she moved made him think of their mothers, and immediately Eurig wanted to tell the others to leave. Now.
The other alk stepped to the side, ready to flank Subira as she moved in. Eurig knew they were preparing for something, but the looks on their faces said that they weren't sure what. He raised a hand, ready to ask his sister to come back when, bam!, contact was made.
One of the stricken alkidikes friends moved to her side to help steady her while the other prepared an attack of her own. She raised her fist and aimed it for Subira, but all at once she cried out, and clutched her torso. The stone that hit her fell to the ground and tumbled around their feet.
Eurig stayed in his spot, but his left arm was full of similar rocks. Even if he was struggling to hold them all the look on his face was pure determination. No one was going to land a hand on Subira while he was around!

Painted Moose Don't mind Subira... she just really loves her brother. XD She had expected some retaliation but not the cry that came forth. Subira moved quickly to catch the rock that fell after hitting the girl in the chest. So Eurig was throwing rocks now? She'd scold him for that later but for now she would use the weapon he'd unknowingly given her. Closing her fist on the rock she swung her hand back as she also spun that way. It might have looked like she were going in the wrong direction but she wasn't aiming for the girl who had gotten hit with it. Her target was the girl who had gone to help her friend. Subira's outer fist struck the girl upside the head as she had moved toward her in order to attack. It was enough to knock her down and hopefully out of the fight. So that left her with the girl that her brother had decided to throw things at. "Apologize to my brother." Even though she had just struck two of the girls Subira still smiled and kept her usually sweet tone. "What!?" The alk looked absolutely confused. Once again Subira adopted the "fox eye" appearance a she tossed the rock into the air then caught it. "You heard me."

That...was certainly a far more effective way to use his rocks than Eurig had anticipated. He recoiled at the sight, wincing at the pain it must have caused the other girl before she hit the ground. She didn't get back up after that. It was honestly kind of cool and scary at the same time. A part of him was worried about her, about whether or not she was really bad off hurt, but then again she was mean and....well, Subira was really cool!
"We're sorry!" The alk pleaded, shifting her now frightened face between the two of them. She tried to keep her eyes on Eurig, but they kept darting to Subira, as if expecting a surprise attack.
"Y-you gotta say sorry to my sister. You said bad things 'bout her too."

Well that had happened a lot easier than she thought. Subira was a little disappointed that she wouldn't get to use the rock again. Then Eruig decided that she took deserved an apology. That hadn't been on her mind since it was he who had his day ruined. A round brow moved upward and she looked at the alk in front of her; waiting. "S-sorry!" Came the abrupt reply. Clearly she didn't want to end up hurt like the others and the way she was looking at Subira suggested she thought the girl to be crazy. She dropped the rock to the ground and nodded her head then turned to walk back toward her brother. Subira went back to her usual sweet smile and she shook her head at him and his arm full of rocks. "Violence solves nothing, you know." Like she was one to talk with what she'd just done. "Sweet rolls?" The young alk seemed to act like nothing had happened.
