Archery is the sport, practice or skill of using a bow to propel arrows. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. This weekend class breaks archery down into several categories and purposes:
Target Archery is the most commonly practised form of archery worldwide and is practised within most Australian Archery clubs. Target tournaments are conducted regularly and held both indoors and outdoors. Shooting distances vary from 18 metres (Indoor) and to 90 metres (Outdoor), with target sizes being 40 or 60 centimetres for indoors and 80 or 122 centimetres for outdoors. Field Archery involves shooting at targets of varying (and often unmarked) distance, often in woodland and rough terrain. A field course is made up of either 24 or 48 targets depending on the round being shot. The archer is required to shoot either three or four arrows at each target. Distances range from 10 to 60 metres and target face sizes vary from 20 to 80 centimetres. Archery Tag is played similar to dodgeball with our bows and patented foam-tipped arrows. This exciting, action-packed game offers the ultimate family-friendly experience that engages everyone. Two teams, consisting of 5 players each playing opposite one another, are separated by a "safe zone." Each team also has what we call a "5-Spot Knockout Target." There are two objectives: 1) to hit the opponents, and 2) to knock out the five discs of the opposing team's target. You eliminate a player by hitting him or her with an arrow, or by catching his or her arrow. The 5-Spot Targets work to save a "life" of one of the players. A "hit" player can be called back into the game when a target spot is knocked out or when a teammate catches an arrow. Players must wear limited protective items (face mask, chest guard, hand/wrist guard) as a precaution, although the arrows are merely foam at the end and can, in no way, harm players.
