Mercy said they were going thrift shopping, which Julian thought sounded like fun. He had a vague idea of what that even meant - less-expensive clothing and oddities with brightly-colored stickers with different discounts every day. Julian didn’t quite understand how he knew that, since he couldn’t recall being in a thrift store at any point ever, but there were a few things he seemed to have knowledge of that he couldn’t explain. He didn’t remember ever cooking, but knew what an oven was and what it did. He knew how to mop floors and turn on a television without having the memory of ever doing so in the past.

Julian chalked it up to being one of those oddball things and instead focused on keeping up with Big Sister Mercy. Despite being shorter than Julian by a hefty amount, she was faster on her feet. Her fiery red hair made her stand out in a crowd and Julian used that fact to keep track of where she was. Mercy was easy to lose!

He knew a few things about her - she had a boyfriend (who Julian did not know, but hoped he was decent because Mercy is one of the best big sisters ever), she loved unicorns and had a large amount of them. She was the tactician of the Council. She was small but had a lot of heart, and Julian loved her more than he could describe.

They found themselves at the door of Discount Village, a large thrift store near Delilah’s condo. Walking there was a chore, but a necessity - if Julian was going to get better and be more balanced in his new body, he had to practice. Thankfully, Mercy was patient and held his hand as they walked down the street and up to the door. They were able to converse about the sound of the birds and how the trees were starting to turn orange and yellow.

Walking through the threshold of the double glass doors, Julian stopped to comment. “...smells like… o-old couch?” This seemed correct to him, as if thrift stores were supposed to smell like that. He squinted up at a sign hanging from the ceiling, depicting a large purple dot and captioned, PURPLE DISCOUNT TODAY - 40% OFF TICKETED PRICE

While Mercy may have had a more practical mission - gathering clothing for herself and the one who had nothing to his name - Julian’s mission was less industrious. He desperately wanted to find a unicorn for Mercy, one that possessed a purple sticker. Dutifully though, he stayed near Mercy as they began to wander the aisles of metallic racks full of new and used clothing.

Mercy was many things, but at her core she was as her named described her. Though, tempered somewhat by adversity, pain, and the loss of certain parts of her innocence. She would still be able to approach and pet a unicorn though - that innocence she still retained and was like to retain it for at least another year or more, her relationship with her boyfriend moving at a proper - dignified (i.e. glacial) pace. (Much to her chagrin, but she’d never openly admit as much.) All the same, her tempered mercy was more than enough to drive her to see Julian out of her older brother’s musty old hand-me-downs. Thankfully they had fit the older man, but Jonathan had inherited the fullness of the Haynes tall genes, so he had already been quite large near the end of his high school term. Still, she’d rather find Julian clothes that fit HIM, instead of the castoffs of her prep-jock brother. Not just his frame, which was thinner and more lanky than her brother’s, but his inner self, his style.

Her outfit had been carefully prepared for the coming cool. It still allowed her to show off her figure - something she was finding herself more comfortable with, if slowly. She had no need to impress Julian, granted, but there was always the chance they could bump into Nick and if Mercy could invade his thought anymore than she already had - well - all the better. She was a patient and well mannered girl - true - but she was also spoilt and sometimes it showed. Her father’s insistence on sheltering her at Crystal had not helped matters either. Still, she’d focused her attention on the older man who might as well been younger - it felt odd, but she had told herself she would not allow the darkness inside of her to win.

She loved him out of spite - which was hardly a healthy way to start a friendship or even a pseudo-family with someone - because, there was a dark, vile thing inside of her that would have seen him scoured from existence. There was guilt there, deep down at the core of things, but she refused to let it color her treatment of him. Julian was not who he had been. She probably could have argued he was innocent of anything he’d done while a youma - having not had any humanity left to reason beyond the instincts of his baser needs. Could have if she had not met a half-youma and known that some still possessed reason and faculties. But, Julian was not on trial for the crimes of Bazzite. The two were not one and the same.

The same, however, could not be said of Sabine and Mercy. She was sure she had blood on her hands, one way or another. But, it didn’t do to dwell, and Julien’s newly bought innocence did not deserve to be sullied by her guilts. So she talked of birdsongs and changing leaves, enjoying the fresh faced innocence as it was. Once she knew she had been that pure of heart - but no longer.

As she wandered the racks, she did try to keep an eye out for purple labels, not that it really mattered. Her allowance would net them what they needed and then some - discounts or no. She pulled a plaid flannel shirt from the rack and turned to give Julian a smile.d

“If you see anything you like feel free to grab it. We’ll sort it all before we pay to make sure you have a few outfits before we go.”

“Aww….M-mercy,” he tittered, toddling along behind her while they were both knee-deep in the shirts of varying sizes. “...it’s… I… can’t th-thank you enough, for… for the clothes you… already gave me. You… didn’t have to… to do that… I just… thank you, for… for everything, really…”

Nervously he batted his fingers together, unable to articulate his gratitude well enough for his tastes. Out of all of his sisters, Mercy seemed the most uncomfortable in his presence. And really, Julian couldn’t blame her in the slightest. He’d noticed her demeanor on the first day they brought him home and they all shared dinner together. It meant a great deal to him to even spend a little time with her, despite their murky history.

“I just… just like… spending time, with you. And… oh, this shirt is… is fancy. Look, M-mercy. It’s fancy, like you!”

Julian held in his hand a plastic hanger, on which was draped a gauzy sort of button-up black blouse positively meant for a sophisticated type of woman. Its lacy design was too sheer to be worn on its own, but it possessed long sleeves and would have been perfect over a camisole. Julian seemed quite proud of his find. “Delilah, she… gave me ten dollars for… for cleaning the kitchen. She said… I did a good job, so… I would… like to buy you s-something, M-mercy. Because… you’re so… nice to me.”

And I don’t really deserve it.

The young man had difficulty not only coping with the emotions he now had the capacity to feel, but hiding them. Julian’s brows furrowed for a moment and he chewed anxiously on his lower lip before shaking his head. He wasn’t here to be depressed - he was here to do some shopping with Big Sis Mercy. And he didn’t want to disappoint her.

Following along dutifully behind the redhead, Julian made sure to hold anything she’d pulled from the racks. It was the least he could do, in his mind. The bright fluorescent lights made him squint out of discomfort, but he was learning to put that aside. Coping with other stimuli was something he needed to learn to do if he was ever going to become a functioning member of society.

With the coming of colder weather, sweaters and heavier clothing seemed to be in Julian’s best interest. He detested pants but hated the cold even more. Thicker flannel shirts and longer sweaters were items Julian had plucked from the racks, and he didn’t seem to possess much discernment in terms of color. “I’m just… happy to wear anything...!” he chirped. Truly, it was difficult to explain to someone that had been human their entire lives - they had nothing to compare it to.

As they passed the end cap of the shirts and sweaters area, on their way to pants and jackets, Julian happened to stop at a display of solid and holiday-themed leggings. Even now there were both Halloween and some Christmas-themed 2-packs hanging on the small plastic rack draped over the end of the metallic rows.

“M-mercy? Do… can boys wear these, too? They’re so… fuzzy and soft!”

Mercy’s discomfort stemmed - mainly - from Julian’s past as Bazzite. But, there were other, small things too, that worried her. Out of politeness she’d never voice how offputting it was for her that a grown man spoke with the same cadence and flow as a child. She supposed that made her… what was the term? Ableist, yes, right… Tumblr was teaching her so many new and interesting terms… She knew - hoped - that with time and practice he would get better, but that didn’t make it any easier in the now. It also shamed her deeply, and she resolved to get better about it. One of the benefits of dealing with her post traumatic stress on her own for so long was she’d been able to fake happiness, using the saccharine shell she’d developed over the years as a shield to keep the sadness and pain inside. Her therapist called it internalizing - said that it would delay her overall recovery. But it was that or break. She didn’t have time to break.

The blouse was lovely though, and she quiety added it to the pile. “Thank you-” she had said, about to downplay the compliment when Julian said he wanted to buy her something. For a moment - the merest flash of a second it wasn’t Julian standing there, tall and awkward, but Nathaniel, young, with big hopeful eyes because she had taken her to the store with him and he wanted to be a big boy and buy her something and he found the beanbag unicorn (third shelf, fifth from the left, Ser Glitterhoof) and had still had enough left to get himself a candy bar. She blinked back tears, and carefully wiped at her eyes, faking a yawn to try and cover it up.

“That is very sweet of you Julian, thank you,” she said with a small nod, glad that her voice held steady and did not reveal the warring emotions in her heart. She gave him another smile, and nodded her head. “But save some for yourself too - it's your money.”

As they passed the rack of leggings she opened her mouth to point out that - no, generally boys did not wear leggings - when she felt the disapproving glare of Ginger upon her, and instead bit the tip of her tongue.

“You can wear anything you want, Julian,” she said, hoping the lie would not come back to bite her square in the rear. “If you want some leggings grab some.”

She was also snagging him warm weather clothing as she could find it - it would not be winter forever.

Julian seemed to beam at Mercy, and despite her insistence that he buy something for himself, he still wanted to get her the blouse and hopefully a unicorn with a purple sticker. He had to make his ten dollars last as long as possible.

"...I'll get... myself, some of these n-nice, soft pants. For... jammies. Delilah said, comfortable jammies are... very important for a good n-night's sleep."

With a definitive nod, Julian pulled one of the 2-pack solid black leggings from the endcap and continued along their route though the store. "S-sometimes, I have... very bad dreams... about, from before. I t-try not to, but s-sometimes it just... happens. And I don't want D-Delilah to... to feel bad. I try to... to do everything I can to... to make things e-easier. You know, by... cleaning, and c-cooking... I already... feel bad e-enough... about her... taking care of me... And a-all of you, too. W-without you, I..."

Julian had to stop in his tracks and lower his head, shoulder shaking with his sniffling. No, he shouldn't be crying, not in public. He didn't want to embarrass Mercy like this. "...I'm s-sorry."

Mercy had nodded and had been about to turn around when Julian's words struck deep. Mercy had been tortured before - well, close enough to it by her standards. Had the cut on her back (the only evidence of its existence being a long, thin, white scar on the small of her back) been any deeper, it would have been very likely she'd of never walked again - or been there to save Julian. It had been a close thing - and the doctors had been AMAZED at her recovery. That had been the night they had summoned their wand... Had truly become a court. The first time they had purified a youma as well - though it had drained her completely and it had been all she could have done to stay alive.

Julian - in contrast - had been easy. He'd come willingly. Had wanted to be freed of the pain of his monstrosity. There had been no bloodshed - a light scuffle with the General she had sworn to kill. One day - she would. She would not tell Julian. She was sure - despite all the pain and the torment, that the man still loved the General he'd served. Some bonds were hard to break. But she would not see him come to harm again.

But his words stung. They brought back memories of sleepless nights. Of tears, and cold sweat. Of rushing to the bathroom and retching and heaving from the panic and the fear. The fire, the blood. The looming youma, her body cradling the pain beneath her as she gave herself up for lost, knees too weak to move from fear. The one person who had tried to help her - help that she had turned down as she sobbed and shook from fear. From weakness.

The innocent, bright eye girl that had been both Sailor Sabine, and Mercy Haynes had died that night in that fiery hell. Even now, fire made her twitch. Smoke make her heart race. Sweat sticking to her skin as she bolted awake in terror from a dream she didn't want to remember on waking, both frozen cold and blazing hot. If she closed her eyes - she could feel the fire on her face, hear the screams. She the dying, the dead. Her stomach churned, the world spun.

And then Julian started to cry.

This poor man - who had been a monster until just recently, with no place to call his own, no family to speak of save the ones he so desperately clung to now because they had saved him. She looked at him, as he started to shake, standing there in the thrift store aisle, trying his best not to cry openly in public.

She moved to him, and wrapped her arms around him, hugging him close to her smaller body as best she could. Surely it could be easily misunderstood - but she didn't care. She gave the poor lost boy a hug like he was the only sold thing in a raging gale.

"It's okay to cry, Julian." She said softly. "I have bad dreams too. They can be really scary sometimes. There are nights I don't sleep after. Nights I wake up in a cold sweat and just curl up in my bed and cry. It's okay to cry."

"Crying means you're human."

Julian sniffled, surprised by Mercy's compassion. It wasn't that he doubted she was a compassionate person by nature - if she wasn't, she, as Sabine, wouldn't have bothered to save a monster such as himself. Julian was surprised that she would hug him like this in public, and comfort him, when he was the one that should have been comforting her.

It was his fault this happened in the first place.

"I... I'm s-sorry you have... bad dreams too, M-mercy." The young man hiccuped, wrapping his form around her smaller body warmly. "It's... not f-fair for you... you should... have happy d-dreams. You deserve happy d-dreams. You're... such a n-nice person, Mercy. I love you..."

And he did, very much so. The sniffles subsided, as he didn't want to embarrass Mercy by crying so much in public. She was nice enough to bring him all the way here, and be patient with him as he was much slower than she was, in more ways than one. Julian desperately wished his brain would fire faster, that he could speak more clearly. His body and soul underwent such a drastic transformation that it took time to get used to how to think, how to form sentences, how to speak properly and clearly.

With a huff, the young man seemed right as rain again (or as right as he could possibly be, circumstances allowing). "I'm s-sorry Mercy. C-can we... go to the... toy section? I want to... want to, find you a unicorn!"

His words burned.

There wasn't a better way to describe the pain his innocent words lashed upon her heart. She wanted to tell him how wrong he was to put so much faith in her. How she was not the girl he thought she was. That his love could be so much better placed in the others than her. They would love him unconditionally. She knew Ginger did. Sita didn't have a single hateful bone in her body, and Phact was the elder sister she'd never had - one she did not want to share with Julian - but knew at the end of all things, that nothing could stay the same after what had happened between the five of them.

They had plucked him from terror, pain, and endless torture - to a life that might hold the promise of redemption. But a part of her, that dark - angry part, had desired nothing more than the removal of his existence. She had quelled it that night - for the most part. The guilt had remained and it still did. She bit her lip and squeezed him harder for a moment, her own body shaking as before she slowly relaxed.

She should tell him. She - HAD - to tell him. But not now, not here. Not in this place.

Pulling back, she gave him her best sisterly smile and bowed her head. "Awww, of course we can Julian! Thank you." She smiled. "Then we should grab some lunch - my treat."

Then she turned slowly, making sure to stay close to him as she guided him to the toy section. Doing her best to play the part - the role she needed to play. She did not want to hurt him. But, she couldn't bear to lie to him anymore either.

It killed her inside - to hide from him. But until this was done - it was all she could do.

"Okay! Okay, yes. That... sounds p-perfect. Th-thank you, Mercy."

Happily he toddled his way to the toy section, dutifully following Mercy's lead. She was smarter than he was, faster, more capable. Julian strove to be as capable as Mercy someday, and told himself to work harder to accomplish that task. He would do it to make his sisters proud; he would do it to start his redemption as soon as possible. He had much to repent for, even the things he didn't remember doing. Youma were monstrous and terrible creatures. Julian had no doubt he, as Bazzite, did horrific things to people.

Things he wasn't sure he could repent for everything, but Julian wanted to try.

They made their way into the toy section, filled with several racks full of fluffy stuffed animals and naked Barbie dolls and action figures missing hands that could fire off at the press of a button on their back. Julian took a deep breath and squinted his bright blue eyes to hard-target search that elusive unicorn with a purple sticker. He would find it! Just for Mercy!

The search concluded in about ten minutes, Julian picking through every last bit of each shelf, pulling everything he could out into his arms to keep looking deeper. His arms filled with stuffed toys and plastic vehicles several times over before the prize was found - a rotund, very soft and squishy unicorn with a matted yet sparkling lilac mane and tail. It was stained with dirt on its hindquarters, but possessed metallic puffy hooves and bright, googly eyes. On its hang-tag was a sticker, just like all the other toys in the store.

Purple!

Julian's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and he vibrated with excitement. "Mercy! Mercy, l-look! It's a... unicorn! I'm going to... get it for you. De-delilah said you... you like unicorns, so... I think... this one n-needs a bath b-but I'll... I'll clean it up! Just... just for you!"

Mercy herded the boy and their prizes overflowing in his arms towards the cashier. Today would be the day Julian made his first transaction all on his own. The blouse and unicorn, with discounts and tax, came out to $9.47 - just under his budget. Beaming with pride, he even received a printed plastic bag to carry their acquisitions home - or to wherever Mercy wanted lunch. Instead of worrying about where they would go, Julian was too focused on the fact that he had his own bag to carry!

It was the simple things he appreciated, even something as mundane as a shopping bag.
