Nick had never been a kid who could tolerate being cooped up indoors. Yet that is precisely what had happened since the rain had started, and even her earlier rebellions had been quickly quashed by the threats outside. Duties and chores had become especially unbearable without the promise of freedom and outdoors afterwards.

She thought about skipping her shifts for cleaning and whatnot, heedless of the later consequences, but eventually decided she might as well have SOMETHING to do while being kept inside this prison... And that was the mindset that brought her to her first infirmary shift, sullen and silent as she waited for the poor hunter who was supposed to show her the ropes today.

The hunter in question was either the worst possible person for the young trainee to be following around that day, or maybe the best. It would depend entirely on how the pair reacted to each other, but there was a certain promising potential for a bit of like minded...bonding. If one could call it that.

Zeke, dressed in a pair of scrubs, a stethoscope draped around his neck, knew he would be showing someone around today, but he didn't realize that someone was one of the junior trainees until he made his way up to the front desk to meet with his charge.

Realization settled in as he noticed there was only one person standing there waiting, and he stared down at her for a long moment, perhaps hoping someone a bit older might pop out of a bathroom or come hurrying through the front door. When nothing of the sort happened he sighed softly and turned the full weight of his attention on her. "Nick?"

Nick met the guy's stare, bold and unflinching. If he was going to just stand there and evaluate her, and find himself disappointed even, there was no point in pretending she didn't notice. At least her own assessment was more favourable. Better a guy with tattoos and piercings than a stuffy old doctor man if she was going to suffer the supervision.

"'Sup." She replied, her tone flat and unimpressed. If he was hoping for someone different, that was his problem.

Not at all what he'd been expecting, but the girl had sass, and Zeke had always appreciated a healthy level of sass. It had a smile tugging at the corners of his lips, expression melting into something a bit less disapproving.

"Did you volunteer for this, or are you being forced into it?" He didn't assume either way, but how he approached working with her would depend on why she was standing there. If this was some sort of punishment, something she wasn't likely to take seriously, than he wouldn't other worrying whether or not she walked away from this experience learning anything useful. If she genuinely wanted to be there, then he'd be more than willing to walk her through the various tasked they'd be doing. All the hows and whys and whens of a medical position in Deus.

"Depends on how ******** close you want to look at it," Nick said with a scowl. She didn't want to spend her day inside doing chores, or duties, or whatever hunters called them to feel better about their job. But at least the infirmary might be more interesting, closer to the front lines per se, than washing dishes and sweeping floors.

Unless this dude was trying to hide that smirk because he planned to have her washing bedpans and literally cleaning s**t off things.

Nick gave him a long, suspicious stare, and waited for some hint as to how awful her day was going to be. But the intensity of that stare suggested the junior hunter was not completely disinterested in infirmary duty, she had enough focus to learn something if that was the task she was put to.

Zeke snorted, and the smirk grew just a little more. "Close enough to know I won't be wasting my time by letting you help out with the fun stuff." There was extra emphasis at the end, his brows twitching knowingly, amused. At the very least, he had her attention. What he wanted to know though, was how for that attention extended.

"So let's ask another way." Arms folding, clipboard dangling from one hand, he leaned up against the front desk. "How interested are you in what we do here?"

"More interested in ******** doing something that matters than doing s**t like all those other chores I keep getting assigned to." She scowled. "I keep hearing we're the ******** last line of defence between humans and those crazy fear ********, but I'm just menial labour with a ******** magical axe."

Nick crossed her arms in an equally confrontational manner. "I know ******** about first aid crap. That seems like a ******** gross oversight for someone who's gonna grow up to defend the world."

It seemed to settle Zeke's opinion on her, because after a moment he smiled, seemingly satisfied. "Good enough." He could work with that. It wasn't an eagerness towards medicine itself, but it with an interest in learning, which made Nick worth teaching.

"Come on." Turning, he'd lead the way back down the hall he'd come from, past the break room, and into a locker room. From a cabinet beside the door he'd pause, looking through a stack of clean scrubs. Lips twitched, brows creased, he glanced at Nick again before drawing out a pair of extra smalls and tossing them at her. "Here, get changed and we'll start making some rounds."

He'd head back into the hall after, giving her some privacy.

Sensing the decision had been made favourably, a rogueish grin spread across Nick's face. Maybe this would be worth the indoor time after all.

She followed Zeke with an energetic step, and accepted the scrubs without complaint. They were probably the best fit she was likely to find, but they still made her look like a kid playing dress-up. When she emerged from the room, Nick practically vibrated with the desire to get moving.

"I guess they didn't ******** plan for kids doing this s**t," she said with a grin, well aware of how the scrubs made her look.

He couldn't help but laugh as she walked back out to him. A little loose, a little long, not terrible, but she did look like she was playing dress up. "It'll work. If you stick around we can get a few pairs taken in for you." She would have to prove herself first though.

Hopefully the small gloves would be small enough.

"Come on, we've got a trainee waiting to get stitched up down the hall."

It would be a lot of watching for her, a lot of learning where things were and the proper way to handle things. Cleanliness habits, organization, and how to properly fill out a chart. A lot of work, and not much hands on training, yet.

Over the course of the afternoon they'd handle two cases of broken bones(one arm, one rib), one curious Fear related infection, and three hunters in need of being stitched up. It was busy, but at six o'clock Zeke was ushering the junior trainee into the break room.

Nick's interest was sufficiently held. "********, really? Can I do it? Skin can't be any worse than jeans right?"

Her designation of observer was only a momentary disappointment, the gross and gruesome details were received with enthusiastic swearing and even when repeating the basics over and over Nick peppered Zeke with questions about the craziest things he had seen in the infirmary.

Finally it was time for their break, but the young trainee still seemed to have energy to spare.

"Fuuuuuck the inside of those gloves smells so bad," she exclaimed, making straight for the sink for what had to be the hundredth time that day. "How long are we gonna chill out here?"

She'd have company at the sink as Zeke peeled off his own gloves and headed towards her. "What the ******** are you sniffing your hands for?" They'd been changing gloves ACD washing have all day, but somehow, no matter how long you actually wore them, your hands still sweat. It was just a thing.

When his hands were clean and dried he made straight for the coffeemaker to help himself to a fresh cup, black, then kicked back in one of the chairs surrounding the circular table in the middle of the small room. "Twenty minutes, unless there's a code." He glanced her way to see if he had to explain what 'code' meant.

"I would take advantage of the downtime while you have it. These shifts can get really long, and sometikes it's a mad house in here.". The voice of experience.

"I'm not sniffing my hands! It's the stupid powder s**t they put inside the ******** gloves! I don't have to put my ******** hands to my ******** face to smell it." Nick trailed along behind him until it was clear he was only going for coffee, and then abandoned him for a seat at the table.

"Ugh, that s**t is gross. You know there's better ways of getting your caffeine, right?" She leaned her elbows on the table and stretched out her legs under the table. It was only coincidence that she avoided kicking Zeke's leg.

"So... have you ever operated on a dude?"

"Powder and sweat," he amended easily, seemingly unperturbed by her long string of profanities. Who was he to say what was or wasn't appropriate language for a kid her age? It's not like he hadn't done his fair share when he was younger. Or even more recently.

All the ******** time.

"Then don't drink it." Elbows on the table, he regarded her over the steaming rim of the mug cradled between both his hands. "It's not a requirement for working her. You're free to find your own means of staying awake on twelve to fourteen hour shifts." He doubted they'd have her working anything longer than an eight, with a six being far more likely, but that wasn't the point.

Brows arched at her question, and the lazy smile he'd been wearing brightened a touch into something closer to a s**t eating grin. "I've assisted. Quite a few times."
