Gabby trudged through the muddy sparring fields with a frown on. The rain had been bogging her mood down lately, and it didn't help that today happened to be her sister's birthday and she found herself feeling incredibly homesick perhaps for the first time in her life.

She snorted as she came upon the training dummies. Given their terrible state of repair and the dreary gray backdrop, they looked especially depressed. The girl could felt she could related to them, but brushed the thought aside so she could focus on what she came here to do.
A black katana soon materialized in her hand, and she gave it a few good swings before starting to wail on one of the dummies.

Fred showed up to the training field the way he always did, fishing for spars to keep himself occupied. Even in spite of the rain people still came around and it was good to watch them, even when he couldn't coax them into fighting him instead of the dummies.
This time there was a woman and he sidled hopefully over to her, giving the katana a grin, it could be a samurai battle.

She whacked away at the dummy until she was winded, and when she finally took a break she noticed someone just nearby, watching her. It took a second of blinking and catching her breath before a smile crept onto her face as she shuffled over and away from the dummies. A living person was better than those things for practice and/or clearing one's head, anyway.
"If you're looking for a sparring partner you just found 'er," she said maybe a little too dramatically. Sen just heaved a sigh as she got herself in a more suitable fighting stance. Or what she thought was suitable. It might have just looked silly to the other guy. "Bring it on!"
"Also, I like your hat."

Fred gave her a bright grin. "I've got a lot of hats, I'm a big fan. Thank you for reminding me though." And carefully he removed it, setting it safely under the shelter of his umbrella which he weighed down with his coat.
"Thanks for volunteering." he said, summoning his Odachi blade with a flourish. "I warn you though, I'm not very good at this thing yet. I'm not going easy on you, I'm just bad." And this seemed to amuse him, making him laugh aloud.
And as if to illustrate his point, he tried to swing at her only for the very very long blade to harmlessly clang off the ground instead.
"See?"

She watched, incredibly amused but beginning to feel silly in her fighting stance while her partner went and set his stuff aside. While he did that she sort of got lazy and straightened out again.
"I don't know if you'll be able to do that in the field," she said, smile kind of lopsided. And it would have stayed that way if he took any longer, but thankfully he finally started to get ready so she found her stance again. His honesty got a giggle out of her, and even more giggles when he actually missed.
"That's alright," she said, still smiling as she turned and sliced at his shield. "I think you'll get used to it the more you practice."

Fred grinned. "Yeah, probably not. If someone damaged my stuff I'd be really mad, like a berserker effect! Don't want to do that on the training field. Might get in trouble." he laughed. "It's so silly, all of this. But it's a lot of fun. I can't believe I have a HUGE SWORD."
He only seemed spurred on at the sensation of the strike against his shield and this time gave a much more direct counter.
Though not one which was actually direct enough to hit. He lost it and cracked up again.
"I'm so bad at this." he said.

The giggling continued as he went on, and she imagined him going into some kind of berserker effect but somehow still missing like he was doing now. It was kind of adorable, in a way, especially because he found it so funny.
She slashed at him again per Sen's instructions, and grinned when she felt her blade make a fairly solid hit.
"Sen's not huge but I've never had a sword before, so it is pretty cool. As far as being fun..." and she paused, smile finally faltering to a more noticeable degree.
"I dunno about that, but if being here means I help someone somewhere down the line then that's good enough for me."

"I'm having fun honestly." he said. "I don't think I've been so happy in years and I have no idea why. Out there I had so much stuff, so many people who called themselves my friends but here I'm finally free from it all. I'm starting over and I think its what I always wanted."
He found the swing satisfying and nodded to her as it landed. "That one was great! You are a natural at this for sure."
He missed again and lost it completely.
"I'm not!"

His compliment kept her smiling, amused if nothing else that he was still so positive despite having yet to land a hit. She swung and felt her blade dig into his shield again, and jumped back just in time to dodge his next attack.
"You'll get the hang of it, I think?" she offered, still standing at the ready. "You're bound to if you keep practicing. I'll be around if you ever need a sparring partner. And as far as starting over is concerned..."
She paused again, considering his words about starting all over and really wanting that, or at least thinking that he did. She'd joined up for reasons that didn't involve her wants or needs, but rather her family's, so it was hard to say that she felt the same way. "I mean, good for you. Sometimes starting over's something we have to do, so I'm glad you got a chance to do that here."

"I'll keep trying till I do." he said with a big smile. "One day. And I'll absolutely take you up on that. Sparring partners are worth their weight in gold."
He was going to do his life over and do it right this time, and he couldn't look more forward to it.

"They are," she grinned, noting the glowing runes on her katana and smiling as Sen pointed out where to aim her charged attack. She was almost tempted to apologize as she charged Fred and swung her katana down diagonally across his chest. The sudden blowback from her own attack surprised her though, and she suddenly felt a very sharp pain shoot up from her hands to eventually spread to the rest of her body.
"Felt that," she winced and stepped back into what she hoped was some kind of defensive stance.

The katana struck Fred and he reeled from the force of the blow, failing to keep his balance. He was just too startled by the power behind the attack to even brace himself.
When it was over he laughed, breathlessly as his body ached.
"That was amazing!" he exclaimed enthusiastically. "Really good hit! Gonna need to step up my game."
He didn't, and the swing as always was a bit underwhelming.

Gabby giggled lightly at Fred's reaction, not sure whether laughing after getting hit with something like that was the norm for him or if he was just trying to get optimistic.
"Thanks!" she started, doing her best to dodge his oncoming blow. It nicked her, just barely, to which she couldn't help but smile. "You're doing...well, you could be doing better. But that was definitely a start!"
With that she swung at him as well, feeling her blade catch his shield again.
"Just keep trying, right?"

"Practically my ******** motto!" Fred said jubilantly. "Never ever stop trying."
He realised with her follow up swing (and Myxie's help) that his shield was close to breaking and that he should call it quits. He laughed out loud.
"Well." he said. "Apart from right now that is. My shield is bust. Great spar and thank you. I absolutely need to get another one with you soon. Gotta get better at this stuff!"
