Selkie picked up a huge stack of books and sat down. He was actually waiting for his partner for a research assignment. Well it wasn’t an assignment; it was more of a ‘meet your classmate’ kind of an assignment which unfortunately was his least favorite assignment. What was it with teachers and their need to try to get everyone to socializing. Then again their answer would probably be something along the lines of learning people skills so you didn't turn out to be a serial killer. . However it seemed like his partner wasn’t here yet and he was at the library, it was a perfect time to try to read some of those books he had been trying to find. Of course they were all like high school or college level books so he didn’t understand everything being written. admittedly this did give him pause but he had a system. He would take notes, circle things he didn’t understand on the paper and then go and pull out more books until he understood what the author was writing. Occasionally he would look up to see if his partner had shown up, but then really it was his fault for showing a good hour before the meeting time.

Cleo had been told she must pair up with someone for her latest assignment. This was, of course, entirely unnecessary. If she must be part of a group assignment she would happily complete the entire task herself and allow the others to take the credit. She assumed this had something to do with 'socialising' which, both fortunately and unfortunately, she had recently pledged to attempt more of this. In order to mentally prepare herself for the meeting, she had spent the morning alone in the library, reading one of the few gardening books she hadn't yet finished.
After a while she noticed something in the corner of her eye. A freshling was occasionally reading, making notes and obtaining more books before returning to what they were reading. Frowning lightly, Cleo watched his behaviour. Curious. Observing him for a few minutes, a few details came to the front of her mind of the description of her study partner. A dark hybrid with vibrant hair... it was a rather vague description, but this was their meeting spot. 'He is early.' She observed. Not entirely impolite, considering it was a public space.
Sighing lightly, she quietly got up from her seat after making a mental note of where she was up to in her book; Cleo loathed the idea of marking pages and felt a bookmark was unnecessary, one should simply remember. Choosing to take the book with her, she headed towards the freshling. She may as well get this all over with, after all. Stopping next to the table he was seated at, she stared intensely at him through her recently pinned-back fringe. "Selkie. I am Cleo." Usually it would have started with a question, but Cleo almost always spoke in statements.

“Yeah but why does the effect occur” Selkie muttered underneath his breath. It was one of those books that were documenting more what had occurred than the scientific reasons behind it. With a sigh he pushed it to the side and moved a strand of wayward hair behind his ear, the only thing that marked him as a hybrid. Out of all his siblings he looked the most like one race. However really it wasn’t that big of a deal for him. His mother was a nixie and so it wasn’t like he didn’t fit in with the family. It was a silly thing to be self-conscious about. However it seemed he was going to have a hand in bringing himself out of his thought process when someone stopped at his table. He stared back albeit less intensely before averting his eyes to the side. He was trying to work more on manners. So his next statement was a given. “Hello Cleo. As you just said I’m selkie. Pleasure to meet you” Selkie stated a bit dryly. Why did adults think socializing was such a good idea again? "Shall we get started?"

Cleo continued to stare at the fellow freshling, her eyes seemingly unmoving and barely blinking. His response was succinct and seemingly pleasant, although it seemed clear to her that he was just as uncomfortable as she was in such situations. This relieved her slightly; no doubt a result of psychological empathy she had read about. When he simply asked if they should get started, Cleo nodded lightly, the shadow of a smile appearing on her face. "Yes." She chose a seat across the table from him, allowing them to still maintain eye contact without having to be physically close to each other.
Occasionally looking across to Selkie, Cleo placed the various notebooks, pens and textbooks she had brought with her in a satchel bag. Selecting the writing book appropriate for the class, she opened it to a page covered in neat but very closely-written handwriting. "I have written appropriately formulated questions for this topic." She stated, lifting a no-nonsense pencil and hovering it above a column marked 'answers'. "Tell me of your extended medical history." She ordered seriously, looking up to stare Selkie straight in the eyes. Remembering something she had heard about manners, she quickly added, "Please." To her, few things mattered more to knowing someone than knowing their physical state and possible medical conditions.

Once again Selkie wondered about the practicality of this assignment. Just from the first few moments he could tell neither one of them was a people person. Selkie himsel didn't like sharing personal information but he wasn't the type to lie either. However he did give points that Cleo seemed to jump straight into the assignment with prepared questions. Truthfully Selkie typically didn't have preplanned questions on the rare occasion as he got the meet and greet assignments because you never knew what type of person you were going to meet but at the same time he was impressed at the thought. Going prepared was one way as well and he liked that Cleo had just bypassed all the other flimsy questions like favorite color. He wondered what his first question would have been. It was a moot point however because he had given the ball to cleo's court. He would do his best to follow. However his medical history might have been a steep first question. What could he say about it. Well he would be truthful that was a given. " I have mostly been healthy, although I do have a mild allergy to almonds and peppers. The only major event was a spider bite i had a bad reaction to about four years ago. Other than that nothing worthy of note. I guess it's my turn? What is your favorite thing about your race?" Selkie answered.

Cleo listened to his answer intently and made sure to note that it took him a moment to decide how to answer. She neatly wrote down everything he mentioned in the 'answers' column, occasionally underlying important words or phrases. She made a note to later research whether there was a biological similarity between almonds and peppers to result in such specific allergies. She was also curious as to whether the reaction to the spider bite was specific to a particular species, time of year or even location. However, as soon as he had answered he asked her a question, somewhat prohibiting her from probing further. She made a note of this too; he hadn't asked about her medical history in return. Did he not deem it important? Was he working off his own list? All points to be curious about.
When she stopped to actually consider his question, Cleo barely resisted pulling her fringe back down over her eyes. She simply wasn't comfortable with all this eye contact, especially when answering direct questions. "I am an orphan." She stated matter-of-factly, not seeing why some people seemed to avoid such topics. "I am not particularly interested in the Baphomet race, although I have of course studied their culture and history as I have with the others." It was true that she held no affinity to her race, never having been exposed to the culture. Realising her answer was rather unsatisfying though, she tried to think of something that would appear more interesting in a report. "If I must pick one feature, it would be that Baphomet magic is inclined towards nature; I am interested in this field." Content with her response, she turned to another page to write down the question Selkie had asked her. What he chose to ask was almost as interesting as his answers to her questions, after all. Turning back to her prepared questions, she hesitated before asking it. Perhaps this was a time to show some empathy or at least reciprocity and wait before asking her pre-written questions. "I ask the same of you." Of course, this freshling was a hybrid, so perhaps his response would be genuinely intriguing.

Selkie wrote down all the answers and thought about cleo’s answer. It was true that a lot of people where losing touch with their culture. They were either cache children or they ended up adopting whatever fit the best with them. A lot of students were even hybrids. He wondered if there would be one universal culture one day with only traits from their different races being the thing that set them apart. He nodded in the appropriate places and then took a deep breath when she asked her question. “I would normally be in a position to actually answer that as a hybrid since I have only ever known my mother who was nixie. However she was never one to associate being a nixie. I have no connections to race. Other than I dry out faster than others.
In short, I don’t associate myself with either of my two races. I know of my demon heritage living here in asphodel of course, and I study nixie culture if only to write reports for history class. I guess if I had to pick, I like that nixies don’t do arranged marriages. There isn’t a pressure to continue the line on. We do what we want when we want to do it and if at all. “ Selkie answered. “I now ask you about your personal medical history. I did not ask as my first question because I didn’t want to make it seem like I was just copying your questions.”

Cleo watched him as he answered, her eyes visibly narrowing. She found it interesting that he would ask about her race when he himself had no attachment to the nixie or the demons. Why would he bring the topic up if he felt no real interest in it? She made a note of all these curiosities, barely leaving room for his actual answer. She was slightly taken aback when he mentioned arranged marriages. Do many cultures still do that? She mostly knew the history of different races, as opposed to their modern customs, but it seemed absurd that such a thing would still be allowed.
Finally, he asked about her medical history, an actually important question. Cleo wanted to comment that repeating each other's answers was actually the most efficient way of performing such an 'interview' but realised that could appear rude or snobby. Was she actually starting to learn manners? "None." She answered simply. After a few moments of silence she realised this wouldn't provide him with much to write about, so she tried to think of something to add. "I suppose this relates to your previous question; Baphomets are typically durable and physically capable. I have no medical concerns that I am aware of." She paused for a moment, before adding, "I do not agree with seafood." Hopefully that was enough to write about. Returning to her questions, she was glad that once more she could steer the conversation towards the 'practical'. "Please list your daily activities." This question not only gave her insight into what Selkie considered important, but would also shape her later questions and when he was available.

He nodded at the appropriate spots and wrote the answer down on the piece of paper. Somehow he didn’t think this was how the teachers expected a meeting between two people to go, but then everyone had a right to be antisocial if that was what they wished. He did almost smile though when she mentioned sea food. So many people actually didn’t seem to like seafood. Guess it added a touch of normalcy to the whole thing in a way. “Well I do all the normal things, get up, have breakfast with the family and catch a portal to go to school. I try to get here early so that I can hit the library up for books on whatever I am researching that day. If they don’t have what I want to learn I then hit up a laptop to check on the internet but I try to avoid the internet because you get so many fake things.” Selkie answered. “Then of course school happens and I go out ghost hunting for lack of a better word.”

Cleo was hoping for specific times and locations for activities to fill into the little 'schedule table' she'd drawn up for Selkie, but was satisfied with his answer nonetheless. Something that particularly stood out to her was the mentioning of a portal. "You don't... live here?" She asked somewhat hesitantly, perhaps displaying the first hint of uncertainty and insecurity since the conversation began. Of course, Cleo knew many of the students lived at home with their families, she simply hadn't talked with someone about it before. It was one of the few topics she tried to complete ignore about herself; her lack of family and community.
Coughing lightly in embarrassment, she chose to move on, not really wanting to dwell on one of her few insecurities. Noticing he hadn't asked her a question, she chose to try to learn more about Selkie. "Ghost hunting? Sounds absurd." She said bluntly. Realising this would almost certainly be seen as rude, she decided to clarify her statement. "Sounds absurd, but I am certain it is not. I... do not actually know much about that... field. What do you do?" She asked, genuinely interested in someone else for once.

Selkie paused feeling like this could be a potential mind field. He knew that there were orphans at the academy, or people from the cache, basically people who didn’t have a family. He was never the type to rub in what he did have so he answered her question with a basic nod. She seemed to want to change the subject and he agreed leaving his answer at that.
“Its okay to find it absurd. After all I think mostly the absurdity comes from how it’s handled. You have so many charlatans it’s hard to know what exactly is real and those who are genuine get ridiculed. I guess I just want to learn more to see if there is something there. Bring credibility to it. I can’t do much at the moment as I don’t naturally see ghosts. However there is magic spells for when I am a senior. So I study what there is about the field so far, see what myths might have truth to them or what people are preying on others for money reasons. I want to be ready for when I am a senior.
So to sum it up I am learning what I can do from a scientific viewpoint. There are instruments to read temperatures. Voice recorders that record at different frequencies and other like equipment.” Selkie started. He didn’t want to overwhelm Cleo with all the stuff but she seemed generally curious and he wanted to give a good answer.

Cleo appreciated the simple nod Selkie gave; that was probably more consideration than she would have, if the roles had been reversed. She made a mental note of this seemingly small exchange, hoping to learn from it in the future. She still paid full attention to his other answer, of course, intrigued by his viewpoint. At least he knew some things to do with the occult were ridiculous, but was keen to identify and distinguish these. A 'scientific viewpoint' was just about the best response he could have given to Cleo. "Respectable." She said simply and, almost momentously, she smiled at him. It sounds petty, but this was possibly the first time she actually smiled at someone since she began pinning back her bangs.
After a moment, she quickly realised how embarrassing this situation was. Her face was somewhat flustered for a moment before she regained composure, turning her eyes quickly to her notepad. "Thank-you, Selkie, you have taught me more than I would have thought." She complimented; high praise from someone who purely values knowledge and learning. "Do you have any further questions for me?" She asked, not trying to rush him away but also keen to head back to her dorm and recharge her batteries after this relatively long social interaction. She hoped he didn't notice the dozen or so questions she had left to ask him; Cleo was nothing if not thorough.

He wasnt sure what to expect after she had started with it was absurd, but so far he was learning to not jump to conclusions. He was glad that cleo seemed to be accepting of what he wanted to do, it wasnt as if he needed approval, but it was always nice to see some one else understand. So often when the more unknown things about their world were brought up people scoffed and just brushed it aside as folly or silliness for the most part. He was out to change opinions obviously, but at the same time he wasn’t adamant about it. Shoving beliefs done others’ throats never got you far. However when she smiled, he gave a small tiny one of his own back. This morning had been interesting. Interesting as it was though, it was getting closer to their first class of the day, or at least Selkie’s and he wanted to mentally prepare himself for the energy that was dealing with his schoolmates. It almost seemed as if Cleo agreed but then reading people was always a tricky thing. “You’re welcome, and I think I have enough. If the teacher tells us otherwise when she checks our progress, then we know meeting here works. Thanks for coming today” he answered after pondering the question for a while. grandma duckeh aaaagh sorry this took so long. October was evil, however I think this is a pretty good finishing note
