Headlines blurred in front of Camille's eyes as she skimmed the feed that was coming in. Deus didn't, for a whole host of reasons, have an outside connection to the internet but they did have a way to get news in. News about how a hurricane had ripped through the Caribbean and destroyed one of the islands of her home.

No one had said anything about Antigua but it was right there. How could it also be unscathed? Terror for the friends she had grown up with, for the families that had helped raise her, for the island that was more home than anything she could remember in America, drove her tears.

She'd tried to hole up in the oft-unused Mist meeting space to cry in peace where her mother couldn't find her and question her. She had no idea that someone had found her anyway.

He hadn't meant to walk in on something so obviously personal, and he stood frozen in the entry way, one hand on the wall beside him, and the other sort of hovering uselessly at his side. Torn between making himself known, or just turning back around and leaving before she noticed him. It was clear she'd been going for privacy, hiding out here, but...he didn't think he could give her that.

"Um." It came out sort of cracked, and he had to clear his throat for his voice to be clear. "Cami?" Even still, it was quiet, hesitant and completely unsure of his welcome as he took a few steps towards her.

~Dinna be a coward, boil. The ghoul's hurtin'.~

Lips pressing into a thin line, he walked the remaining few feet so he could kneel down in front of the chair she'd curled up in, his hands coming up to rest on the arms. "Cami? Are you okay?" He tipped his head, trying and failing to read tear stained features. "Can I help?"

Not that Henry had any idea what he could possibly offer her, but the sight of her looking so completely shattered made his chest ache.

The sound of her name had her starting, body jerking hard, and for a moment it looked like she would jump up off of her chair and run away. Then her brain caught up with the voice and she realized it wasn't Mimsy, it wasn't Caroline, it definitely was not Lawrence or America. It was Henry.

Shoulders slumped back inwards as she tried to stifle her crying and failed entirely. Without even trying to talk she held out her phone where the headlines were still up. "It's g-g-g-gone!" Now it was her turn for her voice to crack on a wail before she clutched the expensive technology like she would crush it in her delicate grip, sobs cresting anew.

The phone had been moving too much for him to read the article, and she'd snatched it back to her chest before he'd get much of a look at it, but what he could glean from that short glimpse was wreckage in some coastal area, and from there it really wasn't too difficult to piece together what might have happened.

If it wasn't her home before she'd gotten to the island, it was at the very least somewhere very significant, and he didn't have a clue what to say that could possibly be comforting to her.

So he didn't say anything, not at first. Instead he'd lift up on his kneels so he could reach for her, hands going for shoulders that were shaking with the force of her crying. Drawing her into the circle of his arms as he leaned in so he could hug her. "I'm so sorry."

He just kept saying it, over and over again, because what else could he say?

Being held while crying was something that Camille was becoming more and more used to. Being held by a boy while crying, however, was completely new. She didn't have much time to dissect how it felt different though because she was too destroyed by the wreckage that was her home island. Pictures had come in where she could very clearly name what had once been landmarks, busy marketplaces, and even her home.

Caroline had confirmed that her mother wasn't even living on the island anymore (and they had no idea where Vanessa even was) but that didn't mean it was any less devastating to see her childhood home battered by a hurricane.

Sobs eventually slowed to hiccups and she eased back out of Henry's grip, scrubbing at her face with the hem of her shirt. "S-Sorry. I was trying not to burden anyone."

When she didn't immediately try to jerk away from him it was a little bit of a shock, but also a relief, and after a moment the muscles in his arms began to relax a little, one by one, until the tension was gone from him. He could be an anchor for her, something to keep her from being swept away by her grief, and he held onto her for as long as she let him do so, murmuring soft, useless apologies into her hair.

As she calmed, starting to draw from of him, he let her go without protest, but stayed kneeling on the ground in front of her chair, looking up at her with worried eyes and tight lips.

At her comment though he'd give a small shake of his head. "You aren't a burden, not even a little bit." Rising up on his knees again, he used his thumb to brush away a tear she'd missed from her chin.

The poor teenager's face was completely ruined by her crying storm. Her nose was slightly abraded by the tissues strewn at her feet (at least she'd thought ahead!) and her eyes were completely bloodshot from the forces of her sobbing. Her shoulders bounced with a quiet series of hiccups as she took deep breaths, trying to find her equilibrium, another tear chasing the one Henry wiped away.

"You're nice to say that but I kinda am." All attempts at trying to make her Caribbean accent more intelligible were complete pointless right now. Cami's throat was raw from crying but she didn't hesitate to lean forward again to rest her head against Henry's shoulder because he didn't at all seem to mind the contact. "I want to be useful and instead I just hide out here and cry."

Henry didn't seem to notice her reddened nose or puffy eyes. Honestly he didn't even really see them. The force of her despair was too powerful, and that was all he had eyes for at the moment.

Fingers tensed on the arms of the chair as he watched that second tear glide down her cheek, and he could feel a lump forming in his throat. The Hurricane was terrible, the damage was terrible, but for him that was all abstract. It hadn't happened to him, or anyone he knew, and he couldn't really place himself in the shoes of those it had. But now? Seeing Cami's pain, he at least had an idea of how it felt. Her reaction hammered it home better than anything else probably would have short of him having been tossed into the storm first hand.

At her insistence he'd shake his head, but he stilled as she leaned forward to rest her head on his shoulder, hands coming up slowly until they were resting on her arms, and then her back, moving in slow, hopefully comforting circles. He wished he were more eloquent, that he could think of anything helpful to say to her, but his tongue felt thick, and his brain was buzzing uselessly.

~Pull it t'gether, boil.~

He tried. "You're allowed to cry when something terrible happens," he said, hoping it was the right thing.

Rather than arguing - which was her normal tactic to go to when someone was trying to give her permission to feel and express turbulent emotions - Camille just closed her eyes and let out a long, quiet sigh. Her lungs had been full with a deep breath so Henry would be able to more than feel the way she swelled, then thinned, with that long exhalation.

It was different and quite nice to be able to quietly recover from a crying jag. Ama was a wonderful shoulder to cry on but she tended to want to talk about things, or go out and fix them immediately. Caroline was a doer, a fixer, and often her daughter loved her for it. Unfortunately there was absolutely nothing she could do about the devastation in Barbuda....right?

Not even bothering to move away this time she spoke in her scratchy, accented voice. "Do you think anyone would let me leave the island to go help?"

Henry braced himself as he felt her take in air, ready to draw his hands back, to apologize for having said the wrong thing, but instead Cami released it all in a long sigh that left her almost boneless against him in a way that had him shifting so he could sit on the edge of the chair with her, rather than kneeling in front of her. It was easier that way, and he could slide one arm over her shoulders.

"I'm not sure." The answer was probably no, but saying so seemed cruel. "I'm sorry." It was entirely unhelpful, and left Henry grasping at something to do or say thought could offer even some small manner of comfort. "But if they let you, and if you wanted the company, I'd go with you?" He could do that, at least. Right?

Unconsciously Cami shifted how she was sitting on the big, overworn armchair so that there was just enough room for the two teenagers to squeeze into it with any modicum of comfort. It was nice to lean into someone that wasn't Caroline for a change, a thought that brought immediate guilt with it.

She did wish that he'd been willing to lie to her, even a little bit, but also appreciated why he hadn't. Henry was a bit of an unknown; to call him a stranger wasn't completely right. They had spent time together in other, much more social, situations but she didn't really know him. Now he was giving her a way to do just that and Cami was content with what she found.

"You don't have to be sorry. It...is what it is." A constraint that was a part of being Deus and a part of being ******** fourteen. The Sun didn't remember not being fourteen but everyone else sure as hell remembered her not being fourteen so she was going to be just a little bitter about her age. Just for a minute. "I really would appreciate the company. I'm appreciating it right now." And her shoulder nudged into his side as she smiled.

For a handful of moments the arm he'd slid across her shoulders was tense, lighter than it ought to be, but bit by bit it began to relax as he realized that his presence, his attempts to comfort her, were actually welcome. He'd never had much luck dealing with girls, for any reason, and his nervous hadn't exactly gotten better since coming to the island.

Worse, probably.

But it seemed as though she actually liked him being there. If that were possible, given the circumstances. He blinked down at her, expression thoughtful for a moment before a very small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Then you can count on me to be there," she'd assure her, happy to be appreciated, to feel needed for a change, rather than just a burden to the rest of the island.

"And here, too. I'm not going anywhere." He'd stay as long as she wanted him there.
