Witty Punching Bag

Gabby was meandering the halls after a nice shower that she remembered to take not in the basement, so the water wasn't reminiscent of freezing cold sludge and she wasn't tempted to lose her breakfast from the smell. The little girl whistled a tune as she went very comfortably in her pajama shorts and a tanktop down the hallway, drying her hair along the way. It occurred to her at some point that if she headed down to her room she would probably just wind up leaving it again to go find something to do, so to save a bit of time she changed directions and headed for the lounge.

Lo and behold, upon peeking inside she found someone she'd never met before. With a shrill inner squee (that only Sen heard, to which he groaned) she toddled on inside and plopped down next to the perfect stranger.

"Heyyo! What'cha workin' on?"

Sometimes Sonja thought to herself. Little things... Like how she was sure she had more of a 'mother' to those she looked out for back home than the leader they had all praised her in being.

Especially when she was sewing up the small holes in her coat from the wear and tear of daily life as a hunter. It had bee a common occurrence for her to mend or teach her old gang how to mend their own clothes since money was a little hard to come by when one was homeless.

A fond, distant smile founds its way up on her face as she shifted her cross-legged position on the couch, flexing her thighs a little to relieve the slight ache of sitting for too long. It had been awfully quiet and Sonja had honestly thought someone would have come into the lounge by now. Wasn't like this place was THAT huge, right?

... And as she thought, someone had decided to peek in and join her. It hadn't been too hard to notice someone coming as the whistle was a little bit of a give away but it was still, all-in-all, a welcome surprise to her to have someone plop on down beside her.

"And hear I'd thought I'd scared off any curious folk." Her emerald gaze shifted over for a moment with the hidden corners of her mouth quipped up.

"Nothin' much, just patchin' up my coat. Keep snaggin' this damn thing in training and fights." She steadied the needle to run it through the stitching she had been meticulously working through a particularly nasty rip along the bottom edge of her jacket.

"But the damage ain't too bad on it now." She let her words roll off slowly as she tilted her head at her own work before resuming it once more.

Scared off? Her? Not likely. With a wider grin on now that the other hunter acknowledged her presence, Gabby scooted a bit closer to get a better look at what she was doing. Personal space was clearly not a thing.

"Ooh, well that's neat," she said as she eyed the needle and admired the way she seemed to expertly handle it. "I've patched things up before but it it's never the seamless kinda job. Just, y'know, it looks like patchwork. Which is kinda a look I guess, but patchwork formal clothing isn't really a thing and really doesn't look all that good, so."

The little girl slipped down from the couch to the floor, thinking it would give her a better view of the project. Now that she did have a better look at the coat she had to agree that it looked pretty beat up. "How long have you been here that it got like this?" she asked, gaze moving up to meet the girl's eye. It was likely that Gabby looked very much like a puppy with big, curious eyes.

Whoever this was... They reminded her a lot of the kids back home. It brought a wide smirk to her face before she focused back on the needle and thread, making sure to give the other a little room for her to see.

"Awww, it ain't nothin' special. Just a little quick stitch here and there to make so I'm at least some what presentable on missions." Looks and appearance weren't entirely high on her list of worries but she figured she should at least make an effort to try.

That and it relaxed her a little to know that her previous skills hadn't gotten rusty.

"Hey, patchwork can look pretty good. Had to do that to several of my older clothes before and it ain't anythin' to be ashamed of." She flicked her coat a little to spread out the bunch that had formed from her slowly making her way up the ripped seam.

"Would ya' believe it's only been a couple a weeks?" She raised a brow with a crinkle at the edges of her eyes from the wide smirk hidden beneath her signature surgical mask.

Sonja should have really taken better care of her stuff. Li, in his totem twin-ring form on her left hand snorted softly in her head.

"Not entirely used to havin' to look the part of some fancy hunter. More used to doin' this out of makin' sure I ain't walkin' the street in nothin' but rags, y'know?"

Gabby nodded along as the other hunter explained what she was doin', and then sort of "oooooo'd" in a very impressed and exaggerated manner when she said that she'd only been there a week and her coat was already in need of patching of up.

"That's pretty killer though. Must mean you've been training a lot. Like, a lot. And about the patchwork, I mean I know it can look good. It always looks cute on all my stuff, but on formal clothes it doesn't always work. Which is cool, I don't really go to any formal events or anything so that worry's kinda whatever I guess."

She blabbered on for a while longer about her misadventures with helping friends that went to such events, but did stop to take a breath and give the other hunter a chance to speak.

"Oh, yeah, I kinda know I guess? I woke up a few days ago so maybe not really know, know, but I've never had a proper uniform kind of anything. Except work uniforms or school uniforms, and those my mom insisted on fixing for me because she was a lot better at it than me."

"Ehhh... Fancy parties an' s**t can get borin' sometimes." Sure, she'd go for the food and booze. But more often than not, the company those sorts of parties attract weren't exactly the sort of people she'd be willing to hang around for too long.

The wealthy never seemed to sit well with her and nor her with them. Too much bad-blood from her past had long spoiled it.

"She at least teach ya' anythin' about fixin' them yerself?" She gave a few tugs on the thread before looping the thread several times around her needle and pulled the knot down to secure the stitch.

The comment on fancy parties got a little snort out of her. She'd never actually gone to one before, but some of her friends had and they asked for her help so she helped. Not that she felt the need to explain this to this perfect stranger who was really good with needle and thread. Gabby pulled her focus on watching the work, nodding as bits of conversation naturally happened.

When the question came she shook her head and turned her eyes up so she was looking at the other hunter's face. "Nah, she was convinced that there'd be time to teach me later. Obviously," and she gestured at herself, "she was wrong 'cause I'm here." There may have been a little bit of bitterness in her tone.
