Name: Mattavi
Age: 21
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft: Seacrafter
Rank: Candidate
Location: Western Weyr
Physical Description: Mattavi has long dark hair and blue eyes. She has a neutral resting expression and she doesn't often smile. She's about average height for a woman and has pale skin.
Personality: Matti doesn't come off as particularly kind and caring. She is the first to say 'it's their problem, let them deal with it', and finds the 'woe is me' type people who fish for help and compliments annoying. Unfortunately, despite her indifferent attitude, she can't help but notice things. Maybe it's exactly because she doesn't bother with the ones making noise, but it's often the girl who acts like she doesn't care that finds the people who are pretending that they're fine. Once her sympathies are aroused there's nothing she can do but try to help them.
Growing up as the ward of a Lady Holder, Matti can be fairly demanding, insisting everything be done as she sees fit and that the world conform to her ideas. With one extremely indulgent brother, she often gets away with this, as it would rarely take more than a single look, or a pointed finger, to get Lex to do whatever she wanted. It comes as more of a shock to her, then, when others are not so willing to listen to her. Fortunately, she has determination and initiative of her own to get the job done herself if no one else will do it. But it's always with a huff and a sigh of 'someone else really ought to be doing this!'
She's fairly perceptive, picking up on things that others often don't, but this can be a curse as much as a blessing. She can tell when people are thinking something they're too polite to say, and it annoys her just the same. She is not very tolerant of insults and is very hot-headed, getting angry easily and jumping into fights she can't always win.
Positive Trait List Empathetic, Perceptive, Determined
Negative Trait List Hot headed, Demanding, Indifferent
History: Matti's mother was the rebellious younger daughter of a lady holder. She fell in love with a pirate and ran away from her small port hold, never to return. For many turns she lived in a small cothold by the sea, taking up the craft of healing. The man she loved had a son which she raised like her own, eventually having a child by him herself.
Unfortunately, Matti was only a toddler when the woman died. As a healer she was always at greater risk for infectious disease, and when one spread from a ship that had come onto shore, she was one of the first to catch it after going aboard to try to help. Their father had been gone on a long voyage, and hadn't sent word for quite some time. Her brother wanted to raise her himself, but he was still a child, and made all his money out at sea, where he couldn't take care of her or bring her with him. So instead, he contacted her aunt, who by now was Lady Holder of a minor hold. She made it clear that only Mattavi was welcome, and no son of a pirate would ever live in her home.
And so her brother left her with her aunt, but he would write to her all the time, making sure his firelizard brought the messages directly to her so they couldn't be intercepted. He would bring her presents and even sneak into see her sometimes when he was back on shore. Her aunt tried to turn her into a little lady holder, but more and more she longed to be like her brother, until finally when she was 14, she sent word to him and followed her mother's footsteps in running away.
Lex got her a position on his ship, though reluctantly. The captain was a cruel man, but he didn't bother you unless you crossed him. With courtly manners and a good work ethic, Matti was actually pretty good at making herself likable, but his attitude still annoyed her. The only other person on the ship around her age was a young boy working as the lookout. Everyone on the ship said he was stupid, but it only took Matti a minute speaking with him to realize he was deaf. Though somewhat closed off, the two became friends, but sadly both he and her brother were much better at attracting the anger of their captain. It only took him or Lex getting into trouble, for Matti to be as angry as if it were her.
Though she wasn't directly involved in the mutiny herself, Matti supported her brother's decision. She did feel bad about the other sailors, however, many of whom were just trying to do their jobs. When the mutiny was revealed, Matti was not mentioned as one of them. For several turns, the tables were turned with her and her brother, Matti having to go out and earn money while Lex stayed in hiding. While she was out one day, Matti ran into a Search rider who invited her to the Weyr. She said she needed to talk to her brother first, but when the rider spoke to him, he ended up extending an offer to him as well.
After meeting two of the sailors from their old ship, Matti tried to break up the fighting before her brother impressed. She could see the man's point, but ultimately took her brother's side, believing they were in the right. Still, when Lex left to join a pirate vessel, Matti declined to go with him, saying she didn't believe in hurting innocent people and that she would prefer to stay in the Weyr. She has remained a candidate ever since.
