Chilling winds had awoken to start their races across this new foreign land. It was a good thing that the jovial male had already had the common sense to dig out his home den within the Northern Woods. He knew that while the winter may be more cruel in the North, Abalos believed he could find enough food that would try to escape from the mountainous ridge just beyond the tree line. His purple gaze scanned over his den, which had been carved into just a small mound of dirt. The woods provided him enough cover from the air, but would it really be warm enough for the winter?

Never before had the male dared to venture this far from the protection of his own pack. However, he he was of age to find his own way in the world. He couldn't rely on his family forever and he wanted to be free enough to have his own life beyond them. Caution was a foreign concept to Abalos. He was the most daring of the wolves he came from because he truly believed in his own ability to warm any heart that came across him. He had total faith that all wolves deserved to be given a chance at friendship and it was the confidence in his own beliefs that kept his heart light and open.

"Aha!" He cheerfully exclaimed to himself, "Leaves!" That was the missing element to his den. What better way to stay warm from the chill of the fall? He knew he could figure it out for himself sooner or later. With a hum to himself, he would wander out in search of fallen leaves to bring them back to his den. Little did Abalos realize that Fall had freshly settled into the land. His search among the trees would be a long one and he should have paid more attention to his surroundings. He was not alone in this forest.

It was the taste of distant winter on the air that woke him first, making him grumble and bury himself deeper in his den. It was comfortable enough, a small jagged entrance into a wide open space. He had pelts and leaves and other soft things down on one side of his den, large enough for more than just him, but he moved around in his sleep a good deal. That's what he told himself anyway. The other side was mostly just cool, smooth stone. Perfect for escaping the summer heat. And sometimes, when it rained a good deal, there was a small pool of clear water in the back, but it never stayed for long.

As well prepared as he was in his den for spring, summer, and fall, the winter winds high in Dawnspire Ridge always sent him into the Northern Forest for... not shelter, because he was plenty sheltered where he was, but soon all of the prey would leave the exposed Ridge and if they all left, he had to follow. A wolf's gotta eat.

Still, it was early in the fall, and he didn't have to find a place to spend the winter just yet. But he would anyway. At least scout out some places that might be good to spent a few months. Hopefully away from other wolves, but he would have to see when he got there.

Which was why the climbing sun found him working his way slowly through the forest, ears twitching at every sound. It was so much louder in the early fall than it was as soon as winter truly set it. He couldn't help but grumble softly to himself. He hadn't spotted any good temporary dens yet, and he was starting to get hungry. Maybe he should stop to have a snack before con--

Hesper crouched down abruptly, half hidden in the shade of a tree, violet eyes tracking movement in front of him. Another wolf. Did he have a den in the area? Was he the type to challenge passing strangers? He pinned his ears down to his head and watched the other male for a long moment, debating what to do with himself. This was why he waited to in his annual move to the Northern Woods.

If the visiting wolf observed the other carefully enough, it would be seen that Abalos was one of the most positive wolves one could have ever encountered. The warm browns of his pelt matched his friendly expression. It was as though the male had never experienced one bad day.

Abalos would be seen looking among the trees as he moved along with a spring in his step. He was thrilled but focused on the task he had determined for himself. Those purple eyes kept to the ground surveying for fallen leaves. Once he found one, with the upmost care, Abalos would snatch it and return to a little pile he was working on building by a tree just in the unknown watcher's sightline. He did this a few more times before a wind pulled up a scent and dragged it under Abalos' snout. Such a surprise was enough to make his head tilt in curiosity and he turned his head in the the direction from whence it came. It was there that he was certain among the shadows of the trees he saw the flash of a lovely color of eyes.

His tail immediately fired way, wagging with delight at the mere idea of the possibility of meeting a new soul, his smile broadening. Territory was hardly even a thought to Abalos since he was so newly settled into the area. He was never one to be a dominating soul. There was no need for him to be dominant if it meant hindering his chances to make a new friend. However he wasn't a stupid wolf. He understood that the fact that this other was staying in the shadows meant he was far more careful than he. There was a flicker of concern that perhaps he had accidentally found his way into the other's grounds but he immediately turned that concern into a bright possibility that this would give them something fun to talk about. In order to attempt to bring some peace of mind to his newest acquaintance Abalos laid down, tail waving. He let out a friendly bark in greeting to the shadow in hopes that he would convince the other to come out and say hello properly. He was eager after all to get to know some of natives and especially his neighbors but he wanted to do right by them as well.

Hesper twitched an ear back at how happy the stranger seemed to be at finding his scent. He thought it was odd that the stranger was so intent on collecting the few leaves that had fallen when the ground would be blanketed with them in the coming weeks. Still. Perhaps that wolf knew something about the area, and since he didn't seem adverse to Hesper's presence at the moment, maybe it would be good to see if anyone was wintering or living in area, aside from the apparently friendly stranger, so Hesper could avoid it.

Stepping out from the shadows, he pulled himself up to his full height, head tilted down at the stranger. Hesper was slightly happy to see that the other wolf had laid down, it made him feel slightly more at ease about approaching. Of course, slight more at ease was not at ease at all. There was a reason he lived alone.

At the bark, Hesper dropped his head and let out a small sound of greeting of his own. It wasn't particularly friendly, but it wasn't hostile either. He took a few steps closer, tail down and not wagging, rose-colored eyes fixed on the stranger.

A few moments passed before Hesper remembered his manners and that he should probably talk.

"I am Hesperrhodos. My intent is just to pass through your territory. I do not want a fight and will leave if you ask it." Blunt honest truth about why he was there was probably the best way to handle it. Probably.
