Since he couldn't be out on the grounds, due to the absolutely dismal weather that October actually found perfect, minus the people eating things, he was in the Life Labs. He wasn't actually in the Life division, but October had taken to visiting the more canine looking minipets just for something to do.

And because he just really, really wanted a dog.

At present, he was lying on the floor in front of a very shaggy looking creature through the bars of its cage, October flopped on his side with one arm propping his head up.

He wiggled his fingers through the door experimentally.

"I see you've found the canine section," Jordan said cheerfully. He came around the end of the shelf, hefting a large bag full of minipet candies, which he was carefully doling out to the creatures in the tanks, one at a time, and making marks on a clipboard. "That kind usually just lies there like an abandoned mop. Want to feed it?"

"The best section," said October somberly, as he waggled his fingers at the creature. It just gave him a sort of woebegone look but didn't move forward, instead remaining precisely where it was and looking - well, exactly like an abandoned mop.

October slid his fingers free and slowly - very slowly - pushed himself up until he was sitting cross-legged instead in front of the cage. It seemed to take a very long time to do this very minute task.

He glanced at the bag of treats with mild curiosity.

"Am I allowed to?"

Jordan dug what looked like a piece of hard candy out of the bag and handed it to October. "This is what they eat," he explained. "It's a candy from Halloween heavily infused with Fear, so don't be tempted to taste it. It'll give you intense paranoia for hours and leave your stomach very uncomfortable. Also, the flavors are disgusting. They like it, though."

October turned the piece of candy over in his hand, giving it a curious look. The smallest of smiles tugged at his lips at the warning; October said politely, "I wasn't going to, really."

There was a pause.

"There may have been a tiny moment of temptation," he amended, and pushed the candy through the bars of the cage. The mop of a dog shifted, snuffled, then inched its way slowly towards his outstretched fingers, gave a sniff, then slowly opened its mouth and very gently took the piece of candy and snarfed it down.

October looked very pleased with himself. Then he gave Jordan a suspicious look.

"Wait. Are you speaking from experience?"

"No, just passing along the warnings that I got when I started getting minipet duties," Jordan laughed. "It does look nice. I figured that the Rancid Fish Guts flavor label on the bag was enough of a warning. But I guess enough people have been curious and made the experiment themselves. Dr. H makes you write up a report on the experience afterward, too, I hear."

He continued to feed the various doglike creatures in the tanks on the row, occasionally reaching in to pet the friendlier ones.

The suspicious look remained for a second longer before October gave a decisive nod, as though to accept this explanation for truth. "People never read labels," he pointed out, tone as somber as it always was. "On the PopTarts label, it actually says to microwave them for three seconds, but no one ever does."

He studied the moppish dog again, October reaching out to prod it's shaggy fur experimentally. It seemed not to mind.

Or maybe it just didn't notice.

"Do you come here a lot, to feed them?"

"People should read labels, but they don't. I usually don't eat pop-tarts either. They're too sweet." Jordan dropped a candy gingerly into a tank with a fluffy little creature that appeared to be gruesomely decaying around its face. He did not reach in to pet this one.

"I'm on the duty rotation sometimes, but not as often as Lifers. But I like feeding and walking them. I have a tank in my room with my own mini - well, technically it's more a permanent loan, but it keeps her out of the experiment rooms." He frowned briefly at the last part.

October looked almost crestfallen at the idea that someone did not eat PopTarts. He gave Jordan a meaningful sort of expression and then squinted at the decaying...thing...with open faced curiosity, October's head tilted to the side. He wanted to poke at it, but something told him that it would either fall apart or he would get that decaying stuff on his fingers.

"Most people think they're too smart for labels," said October sagely, as though this was an important piece of wisdom. He held out a hand up to Jordan for another piece of candy. "You're not Life division, then?"

The rest of what Jordan was saying filtered through. October's head snapped towards the other.

"Your own mini?"

Jordan obligingly handed over another piece of candy, and ticked off boxes on his clipboard as the minipets were fed. "No, I'm Sun," he replied. "Combat division, the jocks of the island." There was a half-joking tone to his statement, almost self-deprecating.

"My own mini." He nodded and put the equipment down to dig his phone out and pull up a photo for October to look at, though he didn't hand the phone over. "Once you've been here long enough, if you take particular care of a particular mini you can request to rent a carrier tank and keep it yourself. It's listed under research, but in most cases it's an excuse to keep your favorite mini with you instead of down here, subject to anyone's poking and prodding. Her name's Tinuviel," he added, smiling. "Isn't she adorable?"

October slid the piece of candy into the next cage, though he stayed where he was in front of the woehound, still waggling his fingers through the bars at it. "I'm not Life, either," he said. "I'm Mist." A glance was given up at Jordan's tone, October's face quite blank. "Are you a jock?" he asked curiously, head slightly tilted.

He was still trying to wrap his mind around the concept of a personal minipet. October peered at the screen of Jordan's phone, lips slightly parted in a look of surprise that overtook his usual lackadaisical attitude. "That's...she's so lovely," he whispered, as though speaking loudly would cause it to run away. "I want one."

He glanced around the room. "Wait. How long is long enough?"

"Probably depends on who you ask." Jordan shrugged. "I guess I wouldn't call myself that, though. Have you been assigned to minipet duty yet, or did someone just tell you about the zoo?"

He smiled at the screen before turning the phone off and putting it away again. "She's really soft. You should meet her sometime. Uh, I'm not sure how long. The individual carriers are a relatively recent development, so the option wasn't available when I was a trainee. You'd have to check in with someone associated with minipets testing as to availability and cost for that. I can give you some numbers," he offered.

"I wouldn't call myself a jock, either," October said. "You seem more intelligent than most jocks I know. And someone told me about minipets, I haven't actually been on minipet duty yet, officially, though."

His eyes moved back to the woehound he was still trying to (unsuccessfully) woo. "I want to meet her. And I'd very much like some numbers," October added, turning back to Jordan with a wide-eyed, slightly dreamy look, his mind already working to figure out just how hard it would be to get a minipet of his own.

"They have to stay in their carriers most of the time, right?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 04, 2017 3:15 pm

"Thanks," Jordan said, smiling. "I wouldn't think you'd be a jock, either. You just don't seem the type. I'm sure you'll get the duty rotation eventually. Everyone gets a little of everything from time to time. Like it or not. Here, if you'll give me your phone I"ll put the numbers into the notepad app, people you can text to find out about the carriers."

He nodded. "It's safe for them to be out of the tank or carrier for roughly an hour a day. Even though the island has enough ambient Fear to make it dangerous for normal animals and humans, it doesn't have enough to sustain minipets for long periods of time. You need to watch the time that they're out carefully. Beyond that hour they'll start to melt. It's not pretty." He shuddered a little.

October looked frankly horrified at the idea of being considered a jock. "A jock means effort," he said, which was an equally horrifying thing. "I like to think I'm the anti-jock. Or maybe just a giant cuddle bug, is that such a thing? Is there a stereotype of a person labeled cuddle bug?"

He was seriously contemplating this as October reached into his pocket, stretching to hand Jordan his phone. The prospect of being able to take one of the minipets home was a thrilling one; it was a delight clearly visible on October's face, rarely seen.

It turned, a second later, to horror again.

"They melt?"
