He was only here in Belrea briefly, which was a shame, because it was an interesting place, full of interesting people, and interesting things that went clang.
However, something was happening and, while Nuawahn wasn't clear what that something was, it was probably important and he knew he should probably go back to Sauti for it. And maybe make sure it wasn't going to hurt him, whatever it was. At least, that was what he thought he should do, and it was a thought that had stuck with him like a Talean burr.
Either way, time, usually infinite and undefined, was suddenly limited. That meant that he had to explore Belrea a little faster than he might have wanted to. He could go back – of course he could. There was always a future to travel to, after all – but he wanted to explore more now and see what he found. That way, he could re-visit it again! Wouldn't that be wonderful?
“BOOF.”
Nuawahn turned at the sound, face brightening with delight. Apparently, what he was going to find here in this nice street here, was a cute canine thing. “Hi!” he said to it. It barked at him and wiggled its tail. In threat? In greeting? It was hard to tell. It was squat and looked almost smooshed, all dark, smooth grey fur except for a sunny yellow spot on it's head and tail. It was adorable and Nuawahn wanted to play with it.... With her, he determined quickly as it ran over to him, tail wagging and tongue rolling.
“You are nice!” Nuawahn said, as it approached and sniffed him, “You're a nice, cute thing. I'm nice too!” Cautiously, he reached down began to pet it, “Lets be friends?”
The creature had no idea what was being said, but it liked being petted. It sniffed at Nuawahn for food and, finding that his pocket was brimming with nice-smelling things, it jumped, barking eagerly.
“Yay!” said Nuawahn, sharing some of his food with the canine. “We're friends!” And that, to him, was that. He didn't think to check the duruf for a tag or an accessory, and he didn't bother asking around. It was unadorned and, from that moment on, it began to follow him around. When he went to an inn, it would cuddle with him at night. When he summoned his lights to keep the darkness at bay, it would woof at them and try to bat them with its stubby paws. No one asked him about the animal, or claimed it for their own, or otherwise protested the brightly colored Windling in their midst.
Finally – with no small effort on Nuawahn's part to keep himself focused – they were able to board a dirgible for the mainland and there, the duruf stood with him on the deck, animal and earthling equally awed by the rising height.
He had been holding the animal in his hands to look over the edge and was just turning around when, suddenly, he stopped. “Oh!” Nuawahn exclaimed, just realizing something as his other pet, the moracker Jelta rustled unhappily in his pack, “You don't have a name!”
Well that wasn't right! Everything deserved to have a name. He scrunched his forehead in thought. “Umm...” his serious expression was ruined by the duruf, who licked him slobberingly. He put the animal down, giggling. He needed a little more time to think about it.
Not too much more, though – that night, it came to him, like a flash out of the fog. “Okay.” he said to the expectant creature, “Your name is Eviath. I don't know why. It just is.” he cuddled the Duruf close.
Eviath, a little disappointed to not have food, cuddled back.
