Who: Mark (HaiLaSin), Dair (Subobo)
Where: Forested Hiking Trail ( Somewhere between Durem and the beach???)
When: Sometime between August 25th-September 1st 2017, late afternoon/early evening
Weather: Warm, a little humid but cooling down
_______

“Would you prefer cash or check?” Bridgette, a mother of two and the one whose party Mark was just about to leave asked as she shuffled through her native american knock-off handbag.

“Check please. Made out to Sparkling Eyes Children’s Entertainment.” He responded, voice tinted with the exhaustion that he felt after a day of not one, not two, but three parties. One of which had to be located half a mile up some forested hiking path because of course it did. At least the woman paid well, sneaking an extra fifty into his pocket alongside the check for the trouble of lugging the equipment this far out into what should have been a location devoid of children’s parties. Not that it made up for the way the absurd location had essentially screwed up any plans he might have had for the rest of the day but it certainly helped lighten the blow.

The original plan for today had been to finish work and drive over to Gambino Isle in order to drop the briefcase containing his Raevan’s soul and fel essence off in person. Meet the face behind the name, so to speak, but it was going to take him another hour just to get back to the van. A very labor intensive hour that was going to leave him aching and wanting nothing more than to drive straight home, pull of his pants and plop down in front of the television until he fell asleep. So much for combining work and Lab responsibilities today.

Snapping out of his thoughts, the man waved a smiling goodbye to the last group of children, their bright faces serving to further ease that budding headache. It was worth it, he reminded himself, if only to see the bright, happy smiles that set into their features as they drifted in and out of that sleepy state young children are so prone to falling into after a long day. When the last group had disappeared down the path, voices chattering about things that quickly became impossible to understand, Mark settled in on the task of collecting the various bits of equipment onto his cart.

Balloon Machine. Face Painting Kit. Guitar. Magic Show box. It was a lot of stuff, all strapped to a single cart with nothing but a couple of stretch bungee cables holding it in place. Still, he managed to make it work, even somehow managing to fit the briefcase with his Fel Essence and Soul into a nicely sized spot so that the Lab 305 text was facing outwards. He hadn’t felt comfortable leaving it in the van, and his pride in the knowledge that soon he would be a guardian had made it near impossible for him to not put it within sight of the curious parents. Unfortunately, the children had kept him far too busy to be able to answer any questions about the mysterious briefcase but maybe next time.

Grunting, Mark pushed upon the handle of the cart, forcing it towards the parking lot situated farther down the dirt path in a painfully slow process. The path wasn’t exactly the most welcoming to the carts flimsy wheels, each rock or root serving as an additional minute worth of struggle. Every couple of feet was a stop to readjust something, or to move something out of the way, or just to take a breath of air. Fifteen minutes in and he had barely made it out of view of the campsite.

At least the forest was nice. Surrounded on both sides by clusters of shrubs and trees, Mark could understand why an outdoorsy family might want to have a birthday party out here. The air was fresh and clean, and every so often Mark would catch sight of some kind of cute forest critter running about on the path ahead. Of course, they were only on the outskirts of the forest. Further in and who knows what kind of crazy beasties could be lurking about. Gaia wasn’t exactly lacking when it came to mythic creatures. A wind blew through the trees, cooler than any before it, carrying a whistle of magic as if to confirm his thoughts. From inside the briefcase, Mark could kind of make out the voices of the Mabinogi Branch as it sung a song in answer.

Dair had been wandering a it further afield as of late, lured deeper and deeper into the woods by the promise of something unknown to be discovered just up ahead. The small notebook he had purloined from Nell was nearly full with awkward, crude sketches of the things he had seen, and his phone was full of disappointingly empty photos that showed nothing of what he had drawn. But the continued thread of disappointment and confusion caused by that disparity couldn't quite touch the wonder he felt at each new find.

He had paused his exploring for a moment with a frown, his head cocked to the side as if he were listening intently to something. Faintly enough, even he was questioning if he had heard something, was the whispering of a quiet voice, too quiet to actually make out any words that it was saying. He floated gently to one side, then the other, his frown growing and his eyebrows knitting together as he tried to figure out where it was coming from. With an irritated huff he settled for spinning in a slow circle, and then when that didn't prove to be much more helpful, he just picked a direction and went.

Thankfully luck was on his side and the voice grew steadily louder as he picked his way through the trees. The words seemed to drift on the air like a physical object, carrying with it flashes of colors and figures that were definitely not part of the forest. His frown slowly morphed into a smile as he followed the trail the whispers were making, barely paying any attention to where he was heading. Until he wasn't actually in the forest any longer, that is.

He blinked owlishly a few times as he tried to focus on what was actually in front of him, squinting in the relatively bright sunlight on the path as he tried to see what had lured him out of the cover of the trees.

The man that he had nearly floated into was a good guess.

"Um." His hands reached up to clutch at the strap of his bag nervously, his usual cool demeanor shaken by the not so usual circumstance. "Hello?"

It wasn’t every day that trees came to life. Yeah, sure, you could argue that with the existence of forest spirits, ents, dryads, nymphs, etc. etc. that this was a common occurrence but when it came to Mark’s version of an average day, floating tree people weren’t the norm. Which is why when Dair suddenly emerged from the forest the human nearly soiled himself in his surprise. It certainly didn’t help that the Raevan’s appearance was a bit unsettling. The black voids where his eyes should have been, the eerie color of his skin, the scars, and the bark crawling up his arms. Not to mention when the boy spoke it was in the raspiest voice that Mark’s ears had ever heard.

Once the shock had worn off, however, it quickly became clear that the boy wasn’t in fact some malevolent forest spirit here to whisk him off to the fairy realms but in fact a Raevan. “Oh, heh, hey there buddy. Sorry, you kind of took me by surprise there.” Patting his chest, Mark offering the Frei what he hoped to be a welcoming smile, which then turned into a curious look as it dawned on him where exactly the Frei had just come from. “Were you just hanging out in the forest? Why-”

The wind rustled and the Mabinogi Branch’s song was near impossible to miss now. It was as if the Fel Essence sense a kindred being in its presence and was calling out to Dair in greeting. Within the corner of his eyes a woman, more beautiful than any have ever seen, rode by upon a stallion of the purest white before vanishing as the Branch fell silent once more. As if she had been drawn out to observe the Raevan before vanishing back into the story from whence she came.

“...okay. Well, it’s never done that before. Usually it just sings and fills your head with stuff. And through the briefcase too...” Mark whispered in slight awe. He had an idea who the woman had been. Rhiannon. A prominent figure within the stories of the Mabinogion from which the Branch drew its name. The Wikipedia article he had read spoke of her being the wife and mother of heroes, and a heroine in her own right as well, a mysterious woman from the ‘Underworld’ which many liken to the fairy realms in Welsh legends. “I guess my Fel Essence must like you!”

Stepping away from his cart, Mark offered Dair a bright smile, hand extending in greeting. “Names Mark! I take it you must be a Raevan, right? That ribbon, rune, and the wings give it away.”

[[ Whether Dair sees her is not is up to you. Technically, she exists, but only within the realm of the Branch's story and her existence in the real world could come across as an illusion or even just Mark's eyes playing tricks on him because he's been handling the Branch so much. TIS UP TO YOU. The point is... the Branch is very interested in the Hag Stone boyo and has many stories it wants to share with him. Can you tell I'm still unsure how to properly play the Fel Essence as it's own being? Probably. ]]

Dair watched Mark warily, clearly ready to bolt back into the shelter of the woods if he made any sudden moves. The cart that was full of a variety of things that one generally didn't need to bring into the forest was given a quick look before he returned his attention back to the man in front of him, his head turning slightly so he was staring directly at whatever he was currently looking at. A small thing, but it seemed to put people at ease if they could tell where he was looking. He frowned slightly at his first comment, inclining his head in a small bow.

"Sorry, I wasn't-" Going to finish that sentence apparently. His eyes finally caught on the silver briefcase that was tucked among the various oddities on the cart, saw the label on the side, and heard the voice he heard earlier swell to life. The words that he could barely make out earlier now rang through the trees, the once shapeless flashes of color he had seen earlier now resolved into definite (though still insubstantial) figures. His eyes caught on a much more solid looking figure of a woman riding a horse, and though she was too far away to make out any specific features, he could have sworn that she looked familiar.

Some of the Branch's effects were likely amplified in Mark's perspectives as Dair's fledgling powers mimicked some of what he had seen in a thankfully positive and cheerful display of his own abilities. By the time he had turned back to face the man his dubious expression was gone and replaced by an excited grin.

"It does that all the time? What Essence is it? Does it..." He trailed off, taking a deep breath and visibly reigning in his excitement before continuing. "Sorry, yes I am, I'm Dair." He returned the handshake, though his attention was still obviously torn between the man and the briefcase holding the Essence.

There was just something innately unsettling about this Frei. It was the elephant in the forest that both were aware of but neither chose to speak about. Or dwell on. Sure, Dair was a bit unusual in appearance and his voice nearly made Mark piss his pants the first time it spilled from grey lips but the boy didn’t send out any other immediate warning bells. The Fel Essence and the manifestation of the story seemed to suggest that the Branch might even like the Raevan. At least as much as an inanimate, talking/singing, ancient magic branch could like a person that is.

The Branch was silent now though. Perhaps it had exhausted itself with that burst of unfamiliar magic, or perhaps now that it had Dair attention it no longer felt the need to extend itself, it was hard to really say. Regardless, the appearance of Rhiannon had put the boy at ease so as random as it had been Mark considered then end outcome to be a positive one. With a smile on his face that was more reminiscent of the children that Mark entertained than something out of Pan’s Labyrinth it became easier to consider Dair the child that he was instead of some horrifying woodland abomination out to siphon Mark’s soul from his body.

The skin on the boys hands wasn’t so much skin he noted as bark. Another tree based Fel Essence perhaps? Or soul. It wasn’t as obvious with Dair as it had been with Shoshana what aspects of him was Fel Essence and what were soul. Either way, it was one of the more interesting hands that Mark had shook that was for sure.

“Sort of?” Voice raising a little higher as he shrugged his shoulders, the man stepped around the cart. A little bit of wiggling, a hand bracing the items adjacent to it, and the briefcase was slid from from its spot on the cart. Obviously, it had wanted to meet the Frei, so who was Mark to deny it such a wish. “It’s called the Mabinogi Branch. Usually, it just sings stories in Celtic at you when left in the open air and gives you little visions of the stories if you hold it’s jar. I’ve never seen it actually make a figure like that though.”

With as much care as he could muster, Mark set the briefcase down upon a flat surface formed by a few boxes stacked on the cart, flipping the latches open to reveal the Branch and Ermine Soul Jar settled in there little slots. The soul briefly pulsed but otherwise ignored the presence of the two observers. The Branch, however, was a different story. The softly sung stories filtered out from the glass into the air, trying to entice either Mark or Dair to pick it up so that it may share more of itself with them. “See, now that’s what it usually does. Just kind of sings.”

By this point in his life Dair had mostly gotten used to the reactions that people tended to have when meeting him for the first time and had started to take some preventative measures to keep the reactions to a minimum. As of late that meant usually wearing sunglasses everywhere, and with the weather finally starting to cool down it also meant a return to preferred style of multiple layers of clothes. He had ditched the sunglasses when he had come to the forest though, and his sleeves were pushed up past his elbows, so there wasn't much hiding his more unusual features from the man.

Not that he had much noticed any reaction that Mark had. His attention was focused pretty much on the essence, watching eagerly as he pulled the briefcase out of the pile of other things on the cart. He floated slowly closer as it was opened, not quite sure what to expect since he had never actually seen any other essences in person. But aside from the strange singing, it appeared to be nothing more than a branch in a jar. He couldn't quite place the kind of tree it would have come from, though a closer look showed a faint golden glow around it's edges. The singing had started again, and he thought that he could have figured out what he was saying if he wasn't so distracted by everything else.

"Can I?" He gestured to the bottle and glanced up at Mark, though his attention was quickly back on the case. The soul bottle was given a quick look, but unfortunately, as it wasn't actually talking to him, it ended up being a bit overlooked.

It was hard to say no to Dair when the boy seemed so very enthralled by the Essence that he was being presented. It might not have been the best idea, allowing a Frei, or any Raevan in general, touch another Fel Essence but Zeke hadn’t been against Mark opening it up for a better listen so it shouldn’t have been a problem to simply let Dair hold the jar, right? Well there was only one way to find out for sure. “Of course, hold on a second. I’ll get it out for you. Just don’t try to take it out of the jar or run off with it okay? I kind of need it in one piece.” Mark laughed, winking playfully at the Raevan.

The jar holding the Branch came out easily enough, visions briefly flashing behind his eyes of kings and courts that he chased from his mind for the time being. The Branch didn’t try to push more on him, its intended target not Mark but the Raevan that it was currently being passed to. Dair’s fingers were rough, but the glass didn’t scratch even as it settled between the boys fingertips.

No sooner had the Essence come in contact with the boy did it begin to sing anew, the strength of its song intensifying as it flooded the boy's brain with visions of the same woman they had seen earlier. While her appearance in the real world had been brief, within the visions she played a central focus, her story being shared in full as the issue of a language barrier was tossed away through use of the visions it instilled within the mind of the one holding it.

It began with her appearance atop that same white horse, riding past a man with wheat colored hair, a lord or king, but for those unfamiliar with the language it was impossible to distinguish which. For several days the man sent his men to pursue her on horses and each day they found themselves unable to catch up to her, as her horse, despite never seemingly changing its pace, remained several yards ahead of them no matter how fast they pursued or for how long. Eventually, when both he and his horse grew weary, the man called out to her and it was only then that she stopped, lips pressed into a somewhat amused smile and eyes twinkling. Again, it was hard to know for certain what was being said, but from the way she moved it seemed as if she was suggesting that all he had needed to do was call for her.

The vision faded, the first part of the story told. The Branch, perhaps so as not to overwhelm the poor boy, had decided to fall silent so that Dair could process what it was he had seen. All the while, Mark had watched on with a somewhat amused upwards tilt of his eyebrow and a hand hovering under the jar in case the Frei might drop it.

Dair offered Mark back a small smile, something a bit less serious looking than most people were able to get out of him. "I'll be careful," he said, at least sounding sincere enough. He hesitated for a split second as the bottle was offered to him before he accepted it and gently cradled it in his hands. He was able to hear the branch before he was given it, but the moment he touched the bottle it seemed as if everything around him faded away.

The images and sounds brought on by the branch's magic were even more intense than they were the first time and his attention was quickly torn form the branch itself. His mouth opened into an astonished 'o' as he watched the story unfold in front of his eyes, and though his attention was clearly elsewhere, his grip on the bottle tightened enough so that it wouldn't slip out of his grasp. It took him a few moments after the visions had ended to remember what he had been doing, and with a sheepish look on his face he offered the jar back to the man. (though, truthfully, he wished he could hold onto it for much longer and listen to what other stories it had to tell)

"Thank you." It took another moment for him to force his attention back to Mark and he gave the man another sheepish smile. "What soul is that?" He nodded back to the open briefcase, where the bottle of brown smoke was finally noticed.

The smile that Mark offered Dair in return was as friendly and sincere as any other that passed the man’s lips, his head nodding in acknowledgement to the oak tree frei’s own sincerity before falling back to observe the Raevan’s reaction to what was to come. The Branch was an interesting bit of magic and the rush he had gotten his first time holding it was hard to forget. The way it sang out to him had left him in awe, and that hadn’t been nearly the reaction that Dair had initially received, so whatever happened now for the boy was bound to be nothing short of sublime.

Dair floated there, pupiless ‘eyes’ staring out into the world but not seeing it at all as the Branch took him through its world, and Mark could do nothing more but stand there with an amused, curious look on his face as it happened. His fears over the Raevan potentially dropping the jar were unfounded. In fact, it seemed more likely that the iron grip that those bark like fingers had on the glass might cause it to shatter sooner than fall. His stomach twisted with a new type of anxiety, fingernails pressing into his palm as he resisted the urge to step forward and collect the jar before the story had finished. It would be fine he reasoned to himself. The glass was probably not even glass but some kind of plexiglas and magic combination incapable of being broken anyway. No way would Lab 305 not have some sort of specialized container to store their insanely powerful magic relics.

Right?

Blinking out of his reveries, Mark realized that whatever the Raevan had been seeing had ended and the jar was being handed back to him. Returning the sheepish grin with a bashful one of his own, his fingers eased from their white knuckled clench to accept the returned Fel Essence and proceeded to slip it carefully back into its place. “Damn, here I am already acting like an overprotective parent and they haven’t even been born yet.” Letting out a breathless chuckle, the man hand waved his earlier anxieties in a way that hopefully made it clear that it had nothing to do with Dair and everything to do with Mark’s own nervousness of sharing his ‘child’.

Fel Essence now safely stored within its compartment, the human turned his full attention back to Dair, flashing him a bright grin and a thumbs up. “Not a problem! I’m happy you got a chance to ‘bond’ with it! I’m still not entirely sure what that was earlier though…” Scratching the back of his neck, he stared out thoughtfully into the forest before darting his gaze down to the soul jar. “It’s a stoat. I’d offer to show you a picture but if you’re the forest guy I think you are you probably already know what they look like. Little weasel like critter? Brown with a black dip on its tail? During the winter it turns pure white and they call it an Ermine?”

Dair might have laughed a bit at Mark's worry of him crushing the bottle in his bare hands if he had been aware of it, but for a moment he had completely forgotten that the man was standing right next to him, so absorbed was he in the vision that the Branch was showing him. But as he handed the bottle back it was at spotless as it had been when it had been given to him (barring a tiny bit of unidentifiable forest debris that Dair seemed to constantly shed). He peered closer at the soul bottle, clearly interested in it now that his focus wasn't on the essence.

"Maybe you'll figure it out when they're born?" He shrugged, not really being able to give much else in the way of an explanation. Nell hadn't told him much of the time before he had been born, so he wasn't sure if any of this would come up again once Mark's Raevan was born. The mystery was pushed to the back of his mind for a moment when he was told the soul. A smile crinkled the corners of his eyes as he nodded at the description. He hadn't been up close and personal to many, but he had seen occasional glimpses of the furry critters in his wanderings.

"Do you think I can meet them? When they're born, that is. I think I'm on the Lab's list by now," Nell had mentioned sending his contact information back to the Lab once he had gotten used to using his phone, but he didn't know for sure if he had or not yet.

In contrast to the Fel Essence the brown smoke within the soul jar might have seemed rather plain in comparison. Calmly floating about inside its glass container, there was no hint towards the struggle that had sent Chittery to the hospital and brought about a serious bit of introspection by the soon to be Guardian. No, it was just brown smoke within a jar, unresponsive to the world around it as it sat waiting for the day when it would merge with the Essence to create life anew.

That didn’t mean that Mark wasn’t absolutely tickled pink to discuss and share it, however, not that much in the ways of discussion was had outside of his description. “I sure hope so. It would be a pretty strange thing to just go completely unanswered, right?” Leaning against the cart, Mark decided against taking the soul jar out of its place within the suitcase, merely letting Dair observe it with his eyes. Nothing couldn’t be ascertained through touch that it couldn’t be through sight after all. It was a soul. In a jar. Not much more to it than that.

Dair’s simple request brought forth a new smile to Mark’s lips and yet another of his mirthful chuckles, head bobbing up and down in a jolly display of agreement. “Of course man! After what happened it wouldn’t make sense to not introduce you two. If you give me a moment to find my phone we’ll add your number in. Just in case.” Pulling himself off his cart, Mark quickly went about the task of checking the various pockets of different containers before finally letting out a triumphant noise as his fingers came up with the doughnut shaped device. Nobody ever seemed to question why Mark’s phone case was in the shape of a jelly doughnut. It just was. “Here you are! You know how to put the number in right?”

Dair certainly wouldn't be one to talk about having a rather plain looking soul, and if he were to bring up the picture of if that Nell showed him it would show a similarly brown smoke that was even less vibrant of a brown than the one that was in Mark's bottle. But it was given a considering look nonetheless. The Branch, of course, was given a second look before his attention was pulled back to Mark.

"I do," he said with a small trace of amusement in his voice. It was something of an oddity to find someone who didn't assume he knew all bout technology simply because he looked teenager-ish. The phone was taken rather gingerly before he slowly poked in his number, taking a bit longer than it necessarily should have taken to do so. "My guardian's number is on the list the Lab sends out too, if you need it."

"Let me know if I can help with finding any answers, too," he added, a bit of his eagerness leaving out into a broad smile.

Dair’s amusement brought a soft chuckle to Mark’s own lips, the older of the two half-expecting the tree boy to respond with some semblance of sass at what many would think a rather stupid question. It wasn’t that he thought Dair to be completely unaware of how to use technology, heavens no, children nowadays were practically born with their hands on their smartphones, merely that the phone itself was a different model and might not be as easy to navigate as the Raevan’s personal device. You could be a master of your own phone, computer or smartpad but still have no idea how to handle a newer or older model, at least if his own experiences were something from which to go by.

Time passed by, with Dair typing in his number with the slowness expected of someone with his combined set of circumstances. Mark’s phone case was large and clunky, adding to the fact that Dair’s fingers were essentially covered in a thick bark that undoubtedly made viewing the small screen a bit of a endeavor, but the man remained patient. “I’ll add their contact onto my phone later tonight then,” Mark nodded with an affable smile, only to add, “as well as a text explaining who I am. Might cause a bit of confusion if I didn’t let her know why I have your contact information, right?” A bright, cheerful laugh escaped his mouth, disguising rather undesirable subtext that might have been associated with a man sharing his contact information with a teenager -- even a teenager as unique as Dair -- without their parent being around. It was something that he would need to push away to contemplate later, that was for sure.

Maybe he could send out a mass email with his face on it explaining who he was and why he would be interacting with their kids? Might be a bit less creepy?

Snapping out of his brief internal tangent, Mark nodded his head eagerly at the offer. “That sounds great! Any help I can get in regards to this little mystery would be incredibly welcome. Though, for now, I think we both better start heading out. I’ve got to adjust my letter to that Zayne fellow for when I send in the Essence and Soul to reflect what went on and I’m sure you have more stuff to do out in the forest, right?” It wasn’t that he wanted to end the conversation necessarily, merely that he knew that he’d forget to add the new information if he didn’t get to it immediately. Thankfully, the exchange of information would allow him to contact Dair again soon, so this certainly wouldn’t be the last time the Mabinogi Branch and Hag Stone met.

"I thinks she's used to randomly running into people from the Lab at this point, it wouldn't be too weird." He'd also mention it when he got home, but Nell was thankfully friendly to most, barring any out of the ordinary behavior (and her definition of 'out of the ordinary' was expanding daily thanks to the Lab). He nodded along when Mark mentioned that he had to move on, giving him another large smile in return. It seemed as if he had forgotten what he had been up to until Mark had brought it back up again, and he tilted his head to the side as if listening to something for a moment.

"Yes, I think I do. Hopefully they don't take too long." He floated slowly back towards the edge of the trees, raising a hand in farewell. "It was nice meeting you, good luck." And with that cryptic message he vanished without a sound back into the forest.

The wind blew down the path, making the leaves rustle and sound uunsettlingly like they were whispering to each other.
