Remarque had waited a short while after picking his room before he ventured to Lesath’s. He was in a room with two beds, but he hadn’t talked to anyone about sharing. Truthfully, he figured someone would wind up in his room at one point or another, and he only half minded. On one hand, it meant that they could take turns keeping watch while the other slept. On the other hand, it meant he had to share a room, and he had gotten very spoiled with being an only child—or by being engaged and sharing his room with a beautiful woman.

And sometimes an (almost) two year old. And a dog.

And...actually, maybe a little space would be nice, on the off chance he wound up by himself.

Either way, he planned to take this opportunity to find Lesath and talk to her. He’d watched what room she claimed as her own and made sure she saw which one he’d gone into. Now, he crept from his room and made his way down the hallway to hers.

He glanced down the hallway and noted the stillness; it didn’t feel like he was being watched, but he was paranoid all the same. He didn’t know if Lesath had wound up with someone in her room ready or if she was in the same boat as him, but he moved to her door and knocked just in case.

Lesath hadn’t realized just how difficult it was to try and sleep with wings attached to your dress. Not even sleep, she wasn’t really tired...but she was...she just was, right now. Stressed. Wound up. She had enjoyed her chat with Logos, but the person she really wanted to speak to was Remarque, and when the knock on her door sounded, she gave a sigh of relief, sure that this time it would be him.

Quickly, the senshi got up and moved silently over to the door, having already removed her boots for the night. At least she could be comfortable in that respect.

When she opened the door and saw that it was, in fact, Remarque, her face split into a wide smile and she reached out, drawing the other Eternal into the room and closing the door firmly, before planting a lingering kiss on his lips.

“Took you long enough. I was starting to think you really didn’t love me anymore.”

When Remarque actually saw Lesath’s smile, he couldn’t help but break into one of his own. He didn’t mind her drawing him into the room and he certainly didn’t mind her kissing him like that.

When her lips parted from his, he still held her close. “You think I could ever stop loving you?” he asked quietly. “I just wanted to make sure the coast was clear. How are you doing?”

He was fine, but then, even if he wasn’t he probably wouldn’t have let her know. He didn’t look like he’d undressed or tried to alter his outfit in the slightest; he looked just like he might if he were out on patrol in Destiny City.

He wasn’t comfortable enough yet to let his guard down that much.

“I’m doing better now that I know you’re still here. I’m not really sure what to think about all of this though...and I have to say...some of our group...god they’re so annoying, Rem. I’m not sure I can take much more being stuck with them...they’re so...noisy.”

But they were enthusiastic, that was for sure...and at least the court had some blood in it, even if it was very new...and well. Well. At least it had some blood in it. That was all she could say and not sound like too much of a jerk.

Lesath pulled Remarque over to the bed and sighed. “Take your shoes off before coming into bed...also, have you tried powering down? Because I can’t seem to make it happen, I wanted to, because the dang buttwings are poking into me and you know how I like sleeping on my back. This is terrible.”

She pouted, but couldn’t help the expression falling after only a moment. It was good to be alone with him again. So much had happened in such a short amount of time...and he was just so reassuring. “What’s the plan, Rem? Do you think we can trust this…’Queen’?”

Remarque snorted when Lesath said some of the group was annoying; sometimes her sheer bluntness just made him laugh. He let her guide him to the bed and took a seat without complaint.

He didn’t take his shoes off but neither did he try to draw his feet off the ground. His body was sore and ached but he did little more than roll his shoulders and try to will it away. He hadn’t sat down in what felt like far too long; he hadn’t even been able to in his own room. He had simply paced until he couldn’t take it anymore and made his way over here.

“I haven’t tried powering down,” he replied; honestly, the thought hadn’t even occurred to him. He didn’t want to sleep, but then again, he didn’t want to be stuck here in the first place.

He reached over to stroke one of the wings attached to her back and then gave it a thoughtful little tug. “Why don’t you just take them off? If you get your dress off, won’t they come too? If you’ve gotta sleep here,” he shrugged.

Might as well be comfortable.

“I don’t know if we can trust her. I say no, but you know I don’t like to trust anyone until they prove themselves. I’ll trust her if she finds us a way home or has something to actually teach us. Her information lesson was interesting, but I don’t care that much for storytime unless it gives me a better understanding of us. I’m going to play it safe for now, though. If you go to sleep, make sure you lock your door. Or call someone in so they can watch your back while you nap? I don’t want you to be caught unawares.”

He looked around the room; it didn’t look much different than his but he was too tired to poke around and investigate much. “And make sure you lock the door. Just in case.”

If she had to sleep, he wanted her to be safe.

“What are you thinking about all of this?”

“I’m not sleeping unless you’re staying here in the room beside me. If you’re so worried about something happening, just stay with me...I’ll take my dress off if that’s what you really want.” She winked and got back off the bed, moving to the door and locking it, her mood lightening when she heard the solid click of the lock. Well, who said that you couldn’t feel safer with something simple. She certainly did.

“There. The door’s locked, and it looks like you’re locked in here with me. Oh darn.” Moving back towards the bed, Lesath flopped onto it, though this time she placed her head in Remarque’s lap, sighing happily. “Now I feel like I’ll be able to sleep no problem. Honestly, I don’t think we can trust her either...you and I both know that being stuck up in space normally leads to death, giant salamanders and a lot of kisses from strangers, but...all of these new guys...this is just some strange sort of adventure...and Kibirev. She...she is just bringing me down, Rem. I can’t believe she was just shoveling all of those crystals into her mouth...and you…”

Lesath shook her head, snorting softly. “Telling me not to eat it because I’m on a diet. You baboon. I should be more angry...but, I’m glad you didn’t let me. So, thank you.” Her eyes closed and she gave another sigh, snuggling closer. “I hate pretending that we hardly know one one another. It sucks...I get why we’re doing it...but it sucks.”

Remarque clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “You’re just trying to get me in trouble by tempting me. Of course, when I’ve got such a nice image in my head, I really don’t know why you’d remind me of space salamanders.”

He hadn’t forgotten his time in the surrounding, or the giant amphibians attacking him.

It was so long ago, now. Before he’d even joined the Court.

He reached down, combing his gloved fingers through her hair as she lay in his lap. “Don’t worry about Kibirev. I mean, yeah, worry about her, but we don’t know that those crystals are dangerous. She was shoveling down enough of them that if they were poison, she’d probably have killed herself at the table or something.” He leaned down and kissed Lesath on the forehead before resuming his relaxed posture and playing with her hair.

“But just in case, I don’t want you eating any until we know that everyone’s woken up in the morning. Remind me to start packing snacks before we go into Mirrorspace, just in case something like this happens again.”

He didn’t know what ‘this’ was, yet, but he hoped it ended faster than their time on the Surrounding. They’d left Chloe in good hands, and if they weren’t back in the morning, he knew he could rely on his mother to check on their dog for them, too. He might get in trouble with work, but he’d come up with something.

“We won’t have to pretend for long,” he assured, even though he was wondering how long it was going to take for this to sort itself out. “And, besides. We can still do this. Just, when no one’s looking. I’ll make it all up to you when we get home. I know how surviving strange space adventures really gets your heart pounding.”

Lesath couldn’t help but grin again. “Well...are you tempted, my love? Because if you aren’t, I’m not doing my job right at all...and if you are...heck. I’m not going to stop you from anything. You and I are locked in here. All alone. And there’s no way out at all. Except for unlocking the door. Which...I mean, you could do, but you shouldn’t. Because...that would make me sad.”

She laughed lightly at his complaint about the salamanders and then fell quiet, thinking about Kibirev, and about bringing snacks next time. It would be great if Mirrorspace wouldn’t just go around changing all of the time...then perhaps they could put a real supply of emergency food in the common area...though, right now she wasn’t sure they still even had a common area.

“I just want to get them all home safe. Especially my girls, Kibirev, Logos and Lovejoy...they’re the ones that I brought into this..so I feel like they’re my responsibility. I miss our baby...and I want to go home...I...I don’t know, Rem. I’m starting to think that maybe I should retire from this. I’m getting too old...but I don’t want to lose you if something ever happens...you know? I’d rather us die together than only one of us die…” Dang that sounded selfish...but honestly, she didn’t really care. She was hungry, and tired...and she just felt moody right now.

“I don’t know why Mirrorspace is doing all of this...but…” Lesath opened her eyes again and frowned slightly. “...I know this is a stupid question, it really is but...do you think this Altea person would know anything about Ares? Not that I care or anything but...Ares was the only other self proclaimed queen that I know of...so...do you think maybe?”

Remarque snorted. “Oh, please. Apparently it’s bad enough to hold someone’s hand. Imagine anything else. The scandal.” He continued to play with her hair, gently teasing it.

“We’re not going to die, Raven. You’ve had a long day, but try not to think of that. Besides, the last time Mirrorspace really tried to kill me, I only got stronger. We’ll be fine. You, me, your girls, and the rest of the Court. We’ll be fine.”

He sounded confident; it wasn’t just wishful thinking, it was a promise.

“I don’t know, though. About the whole ‘Queen’ thing. So far as I can tell, one day Ares just decided she was queen. This one, though.” He shrugged. “She’s got a castle. And not a cheap one, so far as I can tell. The silverware looked like it was real silver. And the detailing on it? They look hand detailed, not mass produced. There were inconsistencies between my fork and Kiuchi’s. Minimal, but enough to tell that it wasn’t a mold. Someone was probably commissioned to make all of those pieces. The whole place setting was like that,” he shrugged. “The plates were porcelain, if I had to guess. Or at least a material similar to it. The designs all seem hand painted, and I’d warrant it was real gold with the way it caught the light. Queens usually come with money, and I’ve got half a mind to pocket some silverware and see what we can get for it back home.” He flashed her a quick grin. “Gotta start saving for Chloe’s college fund, don’t we?”

Lesath grinned, nodding and then shaking her head. “You’re right, of course. You’re always right. Sometimes.” Her eyes closed from the gentle pressure on her scalp and honestly, she could have fallen asleep right then and there. “Maybe this time it’ll be me who comes out of here a princess…”

He didn’t think this had anything to do with Ares, that was a good thing at the very least. And…while he started talking about how everything on the table was real…she finally burst out laughing. “You…are you really going to do that? Because, honestly we could use some fancy silverware for when your mom comes to visit, I love her, I do…but if she complains one more time about how we don’t have any fancy dishes, I’m going to scream…unless she’s just hinting that she’s going to get us some when we get married…which would make sense, since both of those subjects follow one another.”

Leave it to Remarque to notice something like that. But…it was nice. Little things like that which could bring her back to the fact that this was nothing. This was just another obstacle to face, and they would face it together.

“I’m always so glad you’re with me, Rem. You complete me. No matter what I may say when I’m in one of my bad moods. You’re my everything, and you utterly, and totally complete me.”

“Mm,” Remarque replied thoughtfully; he looked down at Lesath fondly. “You’re already a princess, to me.”

She was sweet, like this. Not that they didn’t usually get along splendidly, but he couldn’t help but feel a little pleased at how affectionate she was being—at how much she trusted him.

He liked feeling valued, like knowing that he was important to her.

She was one of the most important things in his life and he’d have done whatever he could to make her happy.

“And I love you more than words can describe. And,” he brushed his thumb over her cheek.

“I was entirely serious about the silverware thing. I fully intend to see what their kitchen and store room looks like, as soon as I get a little more free time. Let’s see how much I can stash in subspace before it fills up, hmm?”

“Sounds good to me.” All of it sounded good to her, him thinking she was a princess, him loving her more than words could describe…him stealing the silverware so they could have more money…it all sounded wonderful.

“We’ll get through this. It’s really nothing new, so…the important thing is that Chloe’s safe and we’re together…” Her voice had gotten quieter and she could tell that she wouldn’t be awake for much longer. “Don’t leave me tonight, please? I know we’re like, pretending we don’t really know each other…but don’t leave me tonight…”

Lesath gave a yawn and snuggled closer to Remarque, half amused that she could feel comfortable enough while stuck in space again to just go to sleep, as though they were back at home. Well, she was home though. He was her home.

Remarque just laughed. Quietly, because he could tell that Lesath was falling asleep, and the last thing he wanted was to disrupt her—or make her cranky.

He continued to comb his fingers through her hair. When she moved closer, he reached over for a blanket and drew it up around her, tucking her in. “We can pretend like we don’t know each other in the morning. I’ll sneak out before everyone wakes up. You rest, though. I’ve got you.”

He leaned back against the wall and closed his eyes, just slightly.

He’d sleep, too. He couldn’t help it; his body needed to recharge.

But like this, at least, he knew he could keep her safe.
