This is one of the oldest houses in Westeros. They are descendants of the First Men and stick to many of the old ways. Their features tend to be soft and fair with light hair and smaller builds. They are fairly independent from the rest of the kingdoms and produce all of their own goods.

The North originally had 35,000 men at the start of the Dornish War. They now have 20,000 men.
Those in the North were the first to join the Crown when it was time to go to war. Most of those who picked up the sword had barely handled a weapon before, unless they were from a noble house. The houses did their best to train the men as they went but they still suffered a considerable losses.

The North could be an independent kingdom without anyone's daily life changing.
The land that comprises the north varies from swamp lands, which border the Riverlands, all the way to year round snow near the Gift. A lot of the land is moderately flat with rolling hills every now and again. It is also the region that has the largest existing, uninhabited forest region. It is due to this variety that the North has remained a completely sustainable region in and of itself.
Their major economy is mostly internally motivated. People grow and raise their own food. They have a tendency to make their own goods. One of their largest exports tends to be large animals such as trained Horses, or Cows and Pigs for slaughter. Another major source of income is the mining and selling of the natural coal and iron deposits found in the lands.
Local lords collect taxes from their regions on a bi-yearly cycle. The rate of taxes vary depending on the land and the minor Lord's demands. Each lord pays 30 percent of what is collected to their High Lord in Winterfell.
𝕽𝖊𝖘𝖔𝖚𝖗𝖈𝖊𝖘 With plenty of land, there's area for animal husbandry and farming. There are a variety of fresh water fish in the lakes all around the region. Along the coast people can make a tidy living in the cold ocean water with all the northern species. Some have even been known to hunt whales which produce not only plenty of meat but sturdy bones and organic oil.
The land tends to be hard and, in most regions more suitable to grains than anything else. Closer to the neck there is an area that can grow select fruit trees such as apples and lemons.
Other natural resources found in the North are veins of iron and deposits of coal.Half of the iron that is mined stays in the North and the other half is sold to the rest of the regions in the Westeros.

Those in the North generally follow the old ways and the old gods.
The religion believes in innumerable and unnamed nature gods, the spirits of each tree, each rock, and each stream. They believe that the Gods can be heard in the sounds of nature, such as the wind, and that they can see through the eyes of the weirwood trees. So long as the trees remain in the land, the Gods have power. They also believe that the Gods hear their prayers and that they answer by sending the wind or through other means. Worshipers of the Old Gods do not have elaborate ceremonies, holy texts, hierarchies of priests, or large structures of worship like followers of the Faith of the Seven. Instead they practice quiet contemplation in godswoods, small areas of forest which have been enclosed within a castle's walls or in an area near by a town.
Worship is is centered on heart trees, which are great Weirwood trees with a face carved into the bark. Weirwoods are considered sacred in the religion, and heart trees are the closest thing to a "shrine" that it possesses. Oaths and promises sworn in front of a heart tree are considered binding. The only ceremony of their religion we have seen is the ceremony of marriage, during which the bride is brought before the weirwood tree in the Godswood to beg the blessing of the Gods for her marriage.
The faith of the Old Gods is personal and less structured than other religions, though some basic social violations are proscribed by it, such as kinslaying, incest, and bastardy. It also upholds the laws of hospitality, far more so than any other religion. Unlike their newer counterparts, The Faith of the Seven, the Old Gods demand very little from their followers. Though extremely offended by the crimes of kinslaying, oathbreaking, incest and violation of the guest right, homosexuality is apparently not considered sinful of blasphemous.

╔══════════════════╗ _𝕮 𝖚 𝖑 𝖙 𝖚 𝖗 𝖊 ╚══════════════════╝
Those in the North tend to lead quiet lives which are often described as solemn by those in other regions. Though it's relatively easy to trade to pass through the neck into the North, it does not happen as much as in other regions of the land which has helped to preserve their culture.

𝕾𝖔𝖈𝖎𝖆𝖑 The Northerners are descended from the first men. They carry with them all the hope and promises of the Pact made with the children of the forest long ago. They live as in balance with nature as they can, raising animals in large fields and using the natural elements to help in their daily lives. Wildlings sometimes raid areas past the Gift which has spurred the local lords to keep a small guard at all times to help protect their ares. That being said, the North is generally a safe place for kids to play out in fields. In fact, children in this area grow up quite independent from their parents as they are encouraged to explore their area and their surroundings.
In the north, people take the matter of honor very seriously. One of the worse crimes, which is punishable by death, is the breaking of oaths. It is a wildly held belief that once a man makes a promise he should stick with it even if it costs him his life. Especially if it's sworn in front of a sacred Weirwood. Of course, not every person will actually go to this extreme but it is something that's sewn deeply into their minds. It is because of this that Bastards are especially reviled as they represent that the marriage oath was broken.
The Northerners also value the sanctity of life. While it is true that sons are generally the first to inherit, daughters have taken power when necessary. Wives also have been known to lead the house when their husbands are away. It is also this value on human life that makes the crime rate such as murder generally low in the region. When a large crime is committed it is believed that the person who passes the sentence of punishment should be the one to carry it out.
𝕬𝖗𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 As winter descends on the north before all other kingdoms, Northern architecture takes this into consideration. Windows tend to be small, taller than they are wide, with shutters to help keep the heat in when winter comes. Standard rooms tend to be small when compared to their southern counterparts and there is a fireplace in each. The fireplaces are not generally grandiose but they are more efficiently built than those found in other regions.
On average the peasants have better buildings than anywhere else in the south save for the Vale. Along the ground people can often find straw thrown about. Unlike southern regions, buildings are built with stone with some wooden areas for animals. Even in the towns the buildings are built primarily out of stone. There are walls around each town to help protect against wildling attacks; only the peasants living outside of the the city aren't subject to that protection. Most keeps are in protected, easily defensible areas. Only Winterfell, the seat of power in the North, is built on open land. That, however, is because they are on the only natural hot springs in the area and have the hot water being pumped through the central structures.

House Adaire is the oldest surviving house in Westeros. They and the entirety of the North are direct decendants of the First Men.
Twelve thousand years ago, the First men crossed into Westeros by way of the land bridge that was connected to the tip of Dorne at the time. As they explored the land they ran into the Children of the Forest. Conflicts quickly led to many deaths of both sides as they fought against one another. The Children, using magic, destroyed the land-bridge and formed the modern peninsula of Dorne which created the shattered islands known as the Stepstones. Afterwards the First men started to destroy their forests and kill all the Children, giants, and anything else they could find.
Soon they ran into an enemy that they couldn't fight against alone. The white Walkers descended and with them came the first true winter. The whites killed everything in their path. It was the first ancestors of the house of Adaire that finally convinced the rest of the First Men to make a pact with the Children and the Giants. It was signed at the Isle of Faces at the center of a vast lake known as Gods Eye. Together they were able to push the Whites back to the land of Forever Winter.
After that, First men's relationship with the Children was improved. They adopted their religion and began to worshiping the Old Gods as they formed the Kingdoms. The fortresses and strongholds of the First Men in Westeros soon began to feature Godswoods, sacred garden groves of weirwoods centered around heart trees.
About eight thousand years ago, both races came under attack from the White Walkers once again. In the War for the Dawn, the First Men and the Children unified to throw back the invasion. With the aid of giants and the Children, Bran the Builder from house Adaire built the Wall and would then build Winterfell and rule as the first King in the North. The First Men subsequently founded the Night's Watch to guard the Wall should the White Walkers ever return. After this war the Children began dwindling in numbers, with the last of them disappearing around the time that the Andals invaded Westeros, two millennia after the War for the Dawn.
Six thousand years ago, the Andals sailed across the Narrow Sea and began a massive migration to Westeros. First landing in the Stormlands, the Andals spread across the continent in waves for the next thousand or so years, until they had overrun and conquered almost all of the continent. Their attempts to conquer the North, however, were defeated at every turn, in part because the narrow lands of the Neck which separate the North from the rest of the continent are an ideal strategic choke point, defended by the ancient castle of Moat Cailin. After many centuries the Andals and First Men made peace, as individual Andal kingdoms carved out of southern Westeros became more concerned with fighting each other than uniting to crush the remaining independent First Men of the North.
The results of the Andal invasion varied from region to region. In many other regions, the Andals established themselves as the new aristocratic class ruling over the First Men, though after thousands of years these ethnic lines have blurred to a large extent except for two regions - the North among them.
