Was it unwarranted machismo for Terry to be trying to get promoted as soon as possible? Would he be as eager to rise in the ranks had his girlfriend not be a rank higher than he? He wished he could say he was completely okay with being a mere trainee to Kim's intermediate but he wasn't.
He was the one with the shield and she was going around throwing herself into fights (or theoretically her division was the type) so it was only right that she had someone on par to watch her back. Which was why he was here at the training fields looking for someone to spar against.
No one higher than him, his last spar against Chance was a stark reminder that he needed to get better at fighting.

Seren was standing on the edge of the training grounds, looking out over them. She needed to get some sparring practice, but didn't know who to ask. She couldn't keep getting help from Rhys on stuff, even if it had been accidental, both of the times he'd ended up helping her out. She looked up, noticing a dark haired man that she vaguely recognized from that awkward as ******** Dare or Dare night. She studied him, for a long moment, then strode over. She didn't know the man particularly but at least she had some sort of recognition. "Hey! You looking for a sparring partner?" She smiled easily at the guy, and shrugged a bit. "I need to start sparring practices, and I have no idea who to practice with. Newbie here, honestly." She gave a self deprecating look down at herself, then looked back at him, waiting to see what he'd say.

Someone bridged the awkwardness-chasm that Terry often had to deal with whenever he was somewhere without someone he already knew and could be comfortable with, which meant he was thoroughly relieved. Though the stoic expression of his face never changed, he nodded, "Newbie as well," he said, summoning Agata to his hand. "Although is your weapon is an actual weapon? It might take levels of creativity I don't believe I am capable of if you had another shield."

"My name's Seren. And heh." She popped the star shaped pin she wore Diwata as into both of her hands, and summoned her into her sword form. "Do you think this will do well enough as an actual weapon?" She gave him a friendly, teasing grin... not flirty, just friendly. "And by newbie I mean 'I haven't ever sparred before' newbie." She wasn't going to lie, she would be right up front about this. "Ran some Sun training course rounds, but you'll be the first human I've ever fought." She settled back on her feet, and added "But I'm more then ready to give it a go, and I have no desire to chop anyone's head off or shoot some one, or anything as ******** crazy as what occurred the other night." She made a light reference to the dare or dare, because all of that still weighed on her a bit, even if it really wasn't her fault.

"Terry," he introduced back, "Your sword has an interesting design. What sort of Halloween creature did it used to be? If you're alright with my asking," he added. It was quite a lovely looking sword, ornate and huge, and something you would find on a magical girl protag.
Agata rustled in the back of his consciousness. Jealousy was a normal thing for the lamprey monster.
"I've only sparred once. With a projectile weapon. You would be my first melee spar so I am quite open to anything." He got into a defensive stance. "Ready when you are."

His name actually caused her smile to falter for a second, and she closed her eyes, to take a slow breath. Not his fault his name was Terry, after all. "Nice to meet you, Terry. And thanks, I do love her look. As for that..." She paused, feeling out Diwata's views.
"We fiiiiiiiight him, yes? I do not mind. He is helping you become strong, yes. So long as he does not hurt you... Then I eat him, please?"
Seren rolled her eyes at the sword, and then grinned at Terry. "Yes, she was a Bakunawa. Big creature, big sword, it works." She shrugged a little, then at his comment about being ready, she gave a low grin.
She stepped back, got into a grounded stance, and lifted her sword, swinging it, landing a good hard hit.

Terry blinked at the reaction to his name and wondered what that was for. Was it because she thought he looked like he was named something else? He did agree that some guys just looked more like a Dominic despite being named John.
He braced himself as best as he could but the proximity, the angle, the force, it made finding a way to counter the blow difficult because it took all Terry could manage not to have his shield flung right out of his hands.
"Good blow," he wheezed, trying to shake some feeling into his arms.

She grinned at him with a quick "Thanks!", and tried hard to make a second swing, but her recovery from the first was not very good, and it just sort of wooshed over his head in a complete miss. She swore a little, having to take steps backwards to NOT fall on her a**. "Dammit dammit dammit, Sorry Di, at least you didn't eat dirt..." She said to the sword, who was yelling at her in her head.

Terry saw his opportunity and used Agata to nudge at his opponent, using the large sword to off-balance her. It wasn't a blow per se but it was certainly effort on the life trainee's part. Now if he could only figure out better ways to deal with the fact he had a shield for a weapon but was not in Moon. Was he considering changing divisions? Nah, he would have better access to golems if he stayed in Life.
"Um, come at me, sis?" he tried to taunt, the uncertainty making his awkward levels over 9000.

She gave him the weirdest look when he said that, but was impressed by the way his shield blow had pushed her back, and even caused some damage. "OOPH... Well then, bro, let's see what we can dish out." She gave him a wicked grin, though her next swing missed as well. She might not be hitting, but at least she was still able to snark.

The strike was telegraphed and Terry leaned back to dodge, which given his six feet height put ridiculous strain on his ankles. Miracle of miracles he hadn't overbalanced and fallen on his a**. Instead, he rebounded forward, throwing his weight into the tackle with his shield aiming for Seren. He may have hidden his face so that he wouldn't have to see if he did hit her.

"********..." She snarled in surprise, impressed by how hard his tackle had hit. She rolled with it, and managed to use it, at least, to turn her sword and use the POMMEL to do a hard hit into his side, aiming for his lungs. "THAT's more like it!" Whether it was about his hit or hers, no one could say, but she did manage to connect.

"Hnnng!" Terry gasped, his breath escaping him from the impact. He had to put some distance between them, but the only thing he had the oxygen for was a wobbly glancing slash from the shield's teeth at Seren.
He stumbled backwards, clutching his side and trying desperately to regain his breathing.

She gave a slight "EEP" at the feeling of the teeth, something she hadn't noticed and was rather surprised by. She jumped back to her feet, and managed to get a good strong stance, then swung hard with the sword's flat side, crying out "COMING IN HOT!", trying for a strong leg sweep. She managed to hit a lot harder then she'd expected, in fact.

Agata was brought up to block. It had not been enough to fully protect Terry but it was enough to have Seren's striking the shield provide some recoil. "Please don't shout Fire in the Hole next," he winced. "I'm quite certain it will not end well for me. Dampers or not."
