SHADOW RUN
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics
You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics
This bonus is consumable.
The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.
Trainees: 0 recovery
Sun Trainees: 1 recovery
Hunters: 1 recovery
Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

Terry could say that he was not looking forward to this training course, but Terry could also say that about every training course in Deus. He considered asking for a companion because this involved fighting and vanquishing Shadowlings and well, not to insult Agata, but Shield Bashing was about as far as he could imagine and that was pretty predictable. But he was assured that there would always be a Sun hunter present to rescue him and he supposed one witness was embarrassing enough, he didn't need another.
Agata huffed, and Terry got the sensation of bubbles in water. And while the weather was still wet and horrible, said sensation was in the back of his head. He would apologize to her but he couldn't change the way he felt nor could he hide it from her. Terry didn't want to go back. He absolutely hated the feeling of being overwhelmed by Shadowlings. And while they were immaterial to an extent, he couldn't properly shake off the clammy claws and the vision of their eyes and that wave of darkness pouring over him. But he wasn't allowed to leave. There was talk about not letting the fear win and pep talks galore, and while intellectually he understood it, the emotional side of him decided facing the Shadowlings was better than having to sit there and deal with inspirational speeches that felt too much like empty platitudes.
He stared at the Sun hunter and begrudgingly agreed to take another run at the course. He refused the offer of being accompanied because he got the impression that the whole point of the matter was that he succeed this on his own. See? Agata grinned, That wasn't so bad, Terry. The vision of her smile with too many teeth should have been far more unnerving than what Terry believed. He was gradually becoming more and more, he didn't want to say desensitized, more like accustomed to the fact that he had her presence inside his head.
She wasn't invasive, but he had yet to fully integrate her into his being.
Here comes the next wave, Terry told her, positioning himself behind the shield and bracing himself for impact. The rain continued to pelt down on him, the muddy ground slippery beneath his soles, but he managed to not get consumed this time. Was he actually doing it? Don't worry, Terry. We can do this together! You and me, JUST you and me! We make the best team~ Agata sang, and again that sensation of being embraced, of a long slender body settling around him like some grotesque scarf, and this time Terry took comfort in it.
He took several steps forward, gave the wave of Shadowlings more than just a love tap when he swung the shield, the jagged edges of the teeth slashing and catching at the creatures. The amount that dissipated was considerable and Terry thought Agata at least deserved a pat on the back for his success.

The life trainee was surprised to find that he wasn't as winded as he was expecting himself to be. Was it possibly because whoever was running the course was holding back to spare him his feelings of failure? No, that didn't seem to be the Sun way. He got the impression that they subscribed to tough love and last minute rescues. But the only other explanation to his less than exhausted state after what was technically already four waves was that he himself was getting better.
Improvement? For a bland beta male like him? He was wary of such development, because it usually meant something awful or terrible was waiting for him around the corner. He wouldn't have been allowed success for long, or he would begin actively seeking ruination.

This was the last wave of the course. It all boiled down to this last surge of Shadowlings. Well no, he could always try again from the beginning and attempt to live through it all over again. Terry didn't want to do that. He really would rather succeed at this point so he could file for permission to use more runic gear.
Can we do this? He asked his weapon bond, desperate for reassurance as he watched the mass of darkness flowing towards him.
Teeth grinned and an intense determination flowed from the shield and into his limbs. Agata was adamant and miraculously Terry survived by the skin of his teeth.Status Wave: 5Attack Dmg: 5 Total Shadowlings taken out: 25 Recoveries left: 0
