Who: Shoshana (Beerrito), Sven (Nymphiea) Where: A street fair in downtown Durem When: Late Saturday morning, late August Weather: Comfortably cool but quite sunny - - - - - The flyers had been everywhere. A street fair, right there in downtown Durem, hosting a whole slew of exciting events. Entertainers, street vendors, artists, anything and everything one could imagine would be there. Shoshana was beyond any level of excitement she'd experienced in months.
The Frei had begged her family to go with her, but alas, it was not to be. Phoenix had no choice but to go to work that day, and Zoe had a school project to work on so was staying with her grandparents to do so. This left Shoshana to attend the fair alone. Phoenix had been hesitant to allow her to do so, considering how chaotic it was likely to be, but Shoshana had been making solo trips around town for a while now and he knew how much it meant to her.
So the Hippocampus Raevan found herself alone in the crowds, her usual water bottle sling replaced with a backpack that held extra water and some snacks. She wanted to save her money for more interesting things than food, so she brought her own in case she got hungry.
She was in complete awe as she floated around, oblivious to the looks she got from many of the other fair-goers. Some didn't seem surprised at all, but quite a few had never seen the likes of a Raevan before. Even if she had noticed them staring she wouldn't have cared. There was so much else for her to focus on!
Fins flickering as she approached a tent where various paintings sat on display, she turned to the middle-aged woman sitting patiently in the shade as she waited to sell her work. "You made these, yes?" Shoshana asked in her deep voice, eyes sparkling with interest. The woman merely nodded with a polite smile. "You are very talented! Very talented. They are beautiful," she gushed, before floating from the tent with a quick, "Goodbye!"
There was so much to see, however was she supposed to see it all in one day?

Bass'ken Lake wasn't too far from Durem, but it was enough of a distance to discourage Sven from going there often. The thing was, Bass'ken Lake was in the country, and there wasn't much to do there. He lived in a quiet neighborhood, secluded from the rest of the world's activity; just the way he liked it. However, Sven had underestimated how lonely he could get when choosing the small neighborhood to settle in. Fishing was an option, and one many of his neighbors enjoyed as they were almost on the lake itself, but Sven wasn't a fisher. So, when a flyer found its way into his mailbox it piqued his interest. A street fair had things to do and activities to watch -- perhaps it'd stimulate his muse?
Saturday morning was a quiet one in his neighborhood, but the calm disintegrated once he entered Durem. Finding parking was difficult, but not entirely impossible if he parked a few blocks from the fair. The walk was welcomed, giving him a moment to steel himself for the smells and sounds he knew he'd be assaulted by once he arrived.
He wasn't wrong, either! The second he slipped into the fray the bustling movement almost consumed him entirely. It was exciting, although a bit overwhelming as he pressed through the crowd. He should have asked Ellie to come along. Having someone to focus on would probably have helped ground everything for him.
Sven kept his hands in his pocket, teeth nibbling away at his bottom lip as he passed stalls and tents. His eyes trailed over merchandise and snacks before, suddenly, something caught his attention, causing his head to jerk back and eyes to lock where they had once been.
A Raevan! Sven didn't make it a habit to stare, but for a moment he couldn't help it at first as a wave of nostalgia rushed over him. It had been a few years ago he had sent in his form applying to become a guardian, and the sight of the Raevan left a bittersweet taste in his mouth. He diverted his gaze, reminding himself that no matter what she may be, she was still a person, and generally people found it creepy when one stared. Beerrito EEEEEY! Have sentimental Sven. If you have her pick up something she can't have for whatever reason, I can toss Sven over to help out.

Shoshana continued to remain oblivious to anyone staring, including Sven. She had not picked up on his look, as she was still fascinated as she floated between displays in awe, commenting and asking questions and hardly waiting for answers before she moved on. She was too overwhelmed by all of the new things to sit still!
But then one booth caught her attention above all else. Her fins and wings stopped beating so rapidly as she stared across the street at the table before slowly approaching it. The table was set with about a dozen hand-crafted hourglasses, each one entirely unique. The sand inside each one varied in color, and each one had a different design around the glass portion. They were all hand-carved wood. Some were simple, with little flowers or tribal etchings. Others were incredibly intricate. One even had a dragon wrapped around it!
What drew her to the table was the knowledge of what her essence had been. She knew exactly what it had looked like, because her family had taken a number of pictures and videos of the shapeshifting sand inside the bottle. The hourglasses reminded her so much of it, even though the sand inside didn't move.
Upon closer inspection she saw not only were there these, but also a display box that held much tinier hourglasses dangling from chains. They were necklaces! A small gasp escaping her lips, Shoshana went to lift one carefully from the case. As she did so she focused on the sand inside and watched as it briefly swirled before settling back down again. The man running the booth stared, confused as to how the sand had moved, but didn't ask.
The Frei knew she had to have it. Setting the hourglass necklace down she began to rummage through her back for her money to count it out. When she did her face fell. She looked at the price tag hanging from the chain, then back to the wad of cash in her hands. A few days ago she may have been able to afford it, but she had just recently purchased a gift for a friend, leaving he with considerably less on hand. "They are very beautiful, yes," she said softly, staring longingly at the necklace. "But not this time."

He had returned to his own pondering over the stalls, eyes kept downcast whenever someone tried to sell him something. If he caved, he'd have a million trinkets and nowhere to put them. He knew his habits! He drifted through the festival, occasionally tempted by a pretty pen here or a hand carved item there, but he stayed strong. It wasn't until he spotted the table with delicate hourglasses when he almost caved. He loved anything related to the beach or water on an aesthetic level. Seashells, pearls, underwater creatures; all of it was fantastic. He had to remind himself that, no, he didn't need any of those items (he needed to give away quite a few forgotten trinkets before he dived back into buying more!) for him to start to pull away, only to stop when he spotted the Raevan from before handling a necklace. His eyebrow quirked, eyes flicking to look at the necklace she held. For a second, he faltered, eyes widening as he could of sworn the sand moved. Had she done that? She had to, he was sure of it.
He witnessed the scene, feeling a familiar tug on his heart. Sven always was the generous type, even back before he had the funds to properly help others. Carefully, he stepped closer, clearing his throat as to announce his presence and not frighten the Frei.
"Are you short? On cash, I mean." He gently nodded towards the necklaces. "I can cover the rest, if you want? They're lovely, and I'd be happy to support the artist who made them."

The Frei had been about to move on and continue her adventure through the fair when Sven approached her. At the sound of him clearing his throat Shoshana looked over, alarmingly bright eyes wide as ever.
"Short? Yes, a little," she admitted, returning her gaze to the hourglass necklaces. "I bought a gift for my friend, and books before that, and I have not saved enough since to buy one!" She rattled on, a small smile on her face despite her disappointment. Her tone was not upset in the slightest, but informative.
When the rest of what the stranger was saying hit her she looked back at him, realizing he was offering to help her pay. "Oh! No, you should not. They are very lovely, yes, but you do not know me, sir, no." Her words came out almost in a jumble, her hands raising to wave away the prospect. No, she couldn't possibly accept the offer, as kind as it was. But they were so beautiful...

Sven offered a soft laugh, head shaking as he turned his head to view the hourglasses. "I don't mind, really." He answered honestly, raising a hand to gently touch the edge of a necklace. "I don't have many opportunities to do a nice deed these days, and you know what they say about doing a good thing a day." He raised his hands, fingers spreading as he waved them.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable, either! If you're sure that's cool, too! I just wanted to offer." Really, the last thing he wanted was to upset her. He knew some people genuinely didn't like when others paid for things, he just had a habit of wanting to assist when he could.

Shoshana looked deep in thought for a moment. The stranger seemed nice enough, and she did so want one of the hourglass necklaces... She picked up the one she had been eyeing.
"If you're certain, that would be very kind of you, yes!" She said as she looked up at him, fins beating with excitement. She pulled her money back out, laying it out on the table in front of her. "I have this much," she noted. "Almost enough!"
Looking back up at the stranger she added, "My name is Shoshana. What is your name?"

He spotted the fin movement, a tiny flicker of a smile on his lips. The necklace would find a good home, surely! Nodding thoughtfully as she pulled out what she had, Sven tugged his wallet from his back pants pocket and fussed for a few seconds before carefully placing the remaining amount needed on top of her pile.
"That should do!" He noted, sliding his wallet back into his pocket before turning towards the girl, who he now knew as Shoshana.
"Hmm, me? Oh! I'm Sven. Sven Beyer; pleasure to meet you."

The shopkeep thanked the two of them as he stuffed the money away. He didn't care about the interaction between the two, he was just glad to make a sale.
"Yes, a pleasure!" Shoshana said as she placed the necklace around her neck, struggling a bit to get it over her mass of curls. When she'd succeeded she admired the beautiful trinket, her colorful eyes filled with emotion.
She looked up at the man, fins beating and a mysterious look on her face. "Would you like to see a trick? What is your favorite thing in nature?" She didn't have much of way to thank Sven, but the very least she could do was put a smile on his face.

He smiled brightly as Shoshana admired her new trinket, eyes trailing to view her long hair. Pretty; how much time did she put into taking care of it? Not like he could talk, really. His eyes flitted back to hers, noting her fins with a small smile. His favorite thing in nature? He took a moment to consider, arms folding as he glanced towards the sky. Aha!
"Rain storms," He finally answered, nodding at his decision. "Does this relate to your trick?"

Wordlessly Shoshana looked up at Sven with a mysterious smile, before looking back down at the hourglass with a bit of a frown. A rainstorm would be difficult to pull off in such a small space. And she didn't want to stir up the dirt around them with so many people around. So she turned back to the table of hourglasses, pointed to one to direct Sven's gaze, and focused.
Almost immediately the sand at the bottom of the glass began to swirl upward through the narrow middle, gathering at the top in what was unmistakably a dark, sandy raincloud. It rumbled about for a few moments, mimicking the way a cloud rolls in the sky, before single grains of sand began to fall. After a while of this as more sand gathered at the bottom, an invisible gust of wind blew it about in a whirl.
After this small but spectacular display went on for about a minute, every bit of sand abruptly fell and sank to the bottom of the hourglass. Shoshana stepped back, reaching for her water bottle. She seemed to slump a bit as she floated, and her lips were suddenly quite dry. She proceeded to drink greedily from the bottle, draining away more than half of it before she poured some in her hand to splash on her face. She capped the bottle and put it away, licking her lips.
"A rainstorm," she said, sounding slightly out of breath. "For you, a thank you."

The smile quirked his own across his face, curiosity flickering in his eyes as he cocked his head to one side. He obediently looked where she pointed, eyebrow raising as he waited for whatever it was she wished to show him to appear. Surprise rose, melting into awe as his mouth parted and he observed the show. How? It was as abrupt as it was beautiful, and Sven almost found himself blurting a request to see it again. No, that had been a gift, one he was grateful for. One he might describe in a future book.
"Thank you, that was..." He faltered, turning to smile at her, letting the silence speak for him. He knew he should let her go now, but he took the second to appreciate the small gift he had been given, wordlessly capturing the scene in the back of his head. Would it hurt to, for the first time in awhile, spend time with a new friend?
".... You know, I'm heading to a live pottery act, if you want to come with? I think you might enjoy it, and I wouldn't mind the company." Beerrito We can start to taper this off into an 'and then they spent the fair exploring'? I def think we should make a 2nd RP sometime soon! His bottle is all filled and he wants to see if Shoshana would like to met his kiddo sometime!
