Being a small angry 14 year old who had a death wish for everyone who wasn’t her or remotely nearby, Spacewatch was rather hostile for pretty much anyone. Tonight’s targets happened to have been a canoodling couple outside a movie theater to which she screamed obscenities at for gross necking and PDA. This was followed by rock throwing and then her going further, finding an old broken plank of wood and smashing in the glass cases that held the movie posters, (she tore up all of them. Except the emoji movie one. She figured it was horrible on it’s own and destroying it would have been a mercy).

Plank of wood in hand, she was prowling around, looking for new targets or things to break, muttering under her breath how the city had no business being over 70 at night.

Most of the powered folk that Mamertine had met so far at last seemed like they were leaning towards adulthood, so when he approached a Senshi’s energy signature he didn’t expect her to look so young.

A look of curiosity and mild reproach crossed his features and he had to stop to scrutinize her for just a moment.

Certainly, that couldn’t be right.

Children wielding magic and fighting for their lives? They were barely mature enough to see most movies, much less engage in war.

He was almost offended that some force in the universe thought it appropriate to let them judge right and wrong, and expected them to fight for it.

When he was near enough to be within speaking distance, he called, “Isn’t it dangerous for you to be out at this hour? What are you doing?”

Spacewatch felt the energy of someone, but she also didn't care because they were order and gosh they were probably going to lecture her about not vandalizing things and being a proper senshi or young lady and she was no lady.

She was hardly people on most days.

So when the voice was male, (gross), adult, (gross), and telling her what she took as that she was too young to even be out past dark, (super mega gross), Spacewatch stopped what she was doing, lowered her plank of wood, turned and looked the Knight dead in the eyes and in her best Christopher Nolan voice said unflinching:

"Justice."

Mamertine raised his chin just slightly, not quite defiantly, but clearly surprised with her answer. He looked down his nose at her, contemplative, but not condescending. Not yet, at least; he was still trying to figure her out.

“’Justice’,” he began after a few seconds, “Is a complicated field that I’m not entirely convinced you’re qualified to distribute. What sort of ‘justice’ are you dispensing out here, on the streets, with your baseball bat? –What gives you the right to claim you are doing anything in the name of ‘Justice’?”

She was younger than most that he’d met, and but he didn’t think the older ones were any more qualified than she was. The majority of them were ignorant, and as long as they didn’t disrupt him from distributing true justice, he could forgive them. Most of the time.

Spacewatch's entire head rolled, not just her eyes. This guy didn't get it, he clearly was just old and had no idea about what real suffering and a fight for justice looked like obviously.

"Justice means you destroy that which caused harm or is causing harm. It's not hard unless you get all moral high ground about it. Justice is simple. What gives me the right to dispense it?" She looked at him, clearly ready to lay some sick 14 year old burn on him.

"The same reason as Batman. Dead Parents." She bashed another advertisement in while cursing in russian.

She whispered as the glass fell.
"Justice."

Mamertine’s eyes flashed as he looked at the girl. “Justice?” he repeated, almost scathingly now. “That is an incredibly broad and unrefined answer.”

He couldn’t tell if she was taking this seriously or if it was a mockery of something he held in very high esteem.

He lived for justice, after all.

He had spent his whole life fighting for the right to dispense it.

Justice doesn’t mean you destroy that which caused or is causing harm. Justice is distributing repentance for said wrongdoings. Destruction is only the proper recourse when you can find no other compensation or atonement. Dead parents are hardly justification to destroy property,” he noted, gesturing towards the shattered glass. “Everyone’s parents die.”

Perhaps he might have sympathized with her; he had lost his parents at a young age but he had invested himself in his career. Perhaps if he’d had magical powers by which to fight crime he would have lashed out in some way, but so far as he was concerned, she hadn’t selected an appropriate outlet.

His eyes were still on the glass. “…And I really must ask. If you are destroying that which causes harm to others…what harm did that advertisement ever do to you?”

I’M SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG; I thought I wrote back to it and then it just got buried under other work after I realized I hadn’t gotten to it yet!

Spacewatch just glared in a silent judgement over the man who clearly had no idea what her life was like and how that being 14 was suffering.
'Reeeeealy?" She drawled, clearly not impressed with the man's answer and thinking that this guy was just another adult who thought they knew best and were going to patronize her.

"I dunno, watching them get brutally murdered, finding out no one cared, no one was willing to care once they went back to their perfect lives while I got to live in fear for mine? As for what this ad did to me?" She looked at it.

"Capitalism is a soul sucking evil that insidiously leads to corruption in the free market and also this movie theater said I had to be 18 to see the latest horror film which is only rated R because they say ********. <********>! Capitalism and the FCC oh and Hollywood is full of rampant sexism, abuse, and corruption too but I mean yeah sure."

She looked at him.

"I'm the bad one here. Leave me alone and let me dispense my justice because it's people like you that won't that make it so I have to."

Spacewatch spent just as much time on the net as Arthur these days but usually not for the same reasons.

Mamertine knew he would never have children. He didn’t think he could handle the offbrand logic or the mood swings or the complete lack of coherency.

Still, he didn’t leave. He crossed his arms over his chest.

“I am sorry for your loss.” It wasn’t untrue; he knew firsthand what it felt like to watch your parents die. He hadn’t lost his parents at the same time, but he might as well have; his father was murdered and his mother was never the same, afterwards. She withered away, both too fast and too slowly.

“But, please. Stop hitting the advertisement. You won’t get anywhere with destroying that. They have deep pockets, they’ll just replace it. If you want to make a different, you should put that energy towards something that will change the large picture. You should get involved in something that allows you to change or combat the FCC or Hollywood or any other rampant sexism, abuse, or corruption. You’re not so young that you can’t start making a difference, now.”

Just about anything was a more productive outlet than this.

He tilted his head just slightly. “Or, you could put your energy towards avenging your parents. Find some way to honor them, or make sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to anyone else. To make sure what happened to you doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

She paused, looked at him and the expression she wore was neutral. She hit the broken glass one more time, turning her back to him, shoulders shaking ever so slightly.
"You- what do you know about what I've done?" She'd tried fighting back. Tried to make a difference once. It had cost her everything.
"Platitudes and condolences are worthless. They only serve to make you feel better. This-" A fresh swing and more glass came down from a distant poster cases as she threw her plank into it.

"This is all I have left. My magic can't stop them. I tried. I tried and they still, they still-" She turned back to him, face red, wetness in her eyes.
"Comet Crash!"

"You get it? NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE!"

Mamertine didn’t feel better with delivering any sort of condolences; he knew that regardless of anyone’s words, it didn’t bring back what you’d lost. It didn’t fill the void they’d left behind. It didn’t do anything. It had always been the socially acceptable way to acknowledge someone’s hurting.

These days, Mamertine usually pretended like it didn’t exist, but apparently pretending to be more human about it had been a bad idea here.

He hadn’t come out to make a child cry, but she was inconsolable and stubborn and attacking him, and he might as well call it a night there. As the comets fell from the sky he managed to avoid taking any real damage, but it didn’t stop the ringing in his ears or the bright flashes that stung his eyes. He squinted and tried to blink away the blinding light; he held up one arm to shield his face.

“Then be the change that they needed! Don’t just go around throwing temper tantrums, do something about it!”

The look she sent the knight was one she sent to many. Hateful, red eyed from tears, and resolute.
"I plan to." There was a hollowness in her voice, a cold vindictiveness that hinted towards violence. The impromptu bat clattered on pavement as the senshi turned nd began to walk away, he posture radiating malice.

Spacewatch didn't need to be told to do something about her situation. She already planned to.
