I wouldn't call it entertainment." he growled out, "It was far from entertaining. Terrifying, perhaps." Especially for the captured sister... "Do you know anything about... the Dretch?" the pause was not out of saying their name. Instead, he was thinking of a strategy to not be defeated by Kaalnia, to win their spar. Vosh always played to win.

Votzhem used the brief opening from her strike - and a painful strike it was - to charge at her, building up life energy inside of him, feeling strength flow through his arms and knit bruised and broken skin together. He aimed his own powerful slashes at her... and missed as she dodged out of the way. His breathing was labored as he turned to face her again, getting into a defensive stance once more. "Not a bedtime story..." he managed, "A nightmare..." He praised Aisha that he wasn't a gasping wreck right now and still able to talk. "You've... you've heard about the disappearances, have you not?" Of course she had - she'd been travelling in Earthling lands. He bet she was even blamed for some of them, though any accusations would roll off of her without a trace. She couldn't imagine that he was out of shape, but maybe he was just out of practice fighting her? Well, they could fix that well enough. And the whole... magic thing. Point was, she was here now, and she'd make everything okay for her silly brother. After she processed what he was saying, of course. "Sure." she said, maybe a little more seriously than usual. People disappearing was never a good thing, and she'd actually gone out to try to find an Earthling that had vanished... "No trace left of 'em, right?" She kept her smile on, though the experience had been... Grim... To say the least. That poor family. "You're saying that mythical bug monsters took them? You know, things out of legend that can, what, control minds? Or something?" She swung the butt of her spear at him to bonk him to the ground, "You sure you aren't mixing up your bedtime stories to little Selvei with reality or something?" Her favorite theories about the disappearances had been 'extremists' (What was her Kiki up to these days?), Bandits (Bandits were always bad news, and they did kidnap people), Slavers (From Oba or some other place), or some other secret organization whose identity and motives were unknown, but definitely Earthling or hybrid. Those had made sense, after all. But nightmares straight out of bedtime stories told to little younglings to keep them in line and out of the poison jungle? Really?

She moved out of range, combing her hair back over behind her antennae, her face momentarily not very happy at all. "Well, darn." she muttered. Earthling secret organizations, extremists, whatever - all of those things could be fought. But if something kidnapped an alkidike at the festival and nothing could be done to stop them... If her brother and their collective and extended family couldn't do anything... If the Mystic, in all her power (or whatever) couldn't do anything... She figured Vosh was exaggerating about being under Aisha's boughs, but who knew? It was at the festival, so it at least was pretty darn close. "Mmmm..." And if that could happen, what could anyone do about it. "Okay." she said, her smile returning, "Okay, well, now what, then, brother?"

He took a moment to recover from the fight. He hurt, and he had just - plainly - reminded himself of how useless he had been. He couldn't turn his Sisters minds, and he couldn't help the one that had vanished. It had to be worse for the young prentice he'd seen hold out a hand to her... It had to be awful for the mystic... It was just awful. "There is talk... of patrols, to find wayward sisters and to secure the borders of our lands." Nevermind that they were not bothering with lands beyond that. "There is also hope that among the ancient scrolls will be... something." He wasn't sure if he could hope for that. "I recommended you." he added, "I know..." and now he smiled wanly, "How much you like scrolls."

Kaalnia had to laugh.
"That I do!" she said, "I guess I'll take a look, then, see what I can find." She'd read scrolls from Earthling cultures too, in her desire to figure out what happened beyond death and all. Maybe, with that in her head, she'd figure something out! Yeah! Why not?!
"I'll help you with the patrols, if thats what you want to do. It'll be just like old times, right?" She looked at him affectionately. There was a smile - if serious-faced Voshhy was smiling then hey, there was hope for someone, right?
"Lets get you all cleaned up before your gorgeous wife decides to stab me, haha!" she said to him, helping him up. It was almost a very real threat. "And then I'll go do that whole... researchy thing."

Kaalnia... was reassuring. She'd beaten him good, but she was reassuring. He chuckled halfheartedly. "It will be like old times." he murmured. Yes, those days battling bandits in Zena...
"All right." he said, standing up with her help.
There. Kaalnia was all right, and she was mobilized. There would be hope yet. Maybe.
