It was the second day of Turnover and thankfully the relay had been planned for the afternoon, giving the occupants of the Weyr time to recover from the night before’s merriment at least a little. The celebration still continued, although perhaps somewhat more subdued. Dragons gathered at Earthslide for the last time. This time however was a bit different. This was not the starting point for the race, but the finish line. The relay was to be flown in teams of three. Each member was given a location to between to, where judges waited.

The entrants for the first leg betweened far away from the Weyr. They would be tasked with flying over the plains. The the longest leg of the relay, the ground was flat and allowed the dragon to power forward, however the stretch was too long to be completed as a sprint. Once the reached the base of the mountain range they would hand over to the second member of their team.

This competitor was charged with flying to the highest peak in the Fort Range. It was a tough climb to complete, requiring a great deal of strength to power to the top. There they would hand over the last member of their team.

The last leg of the relay is one of skill. The entrants must fly from the peak back to the Weyr and land on Earthslide to finish. However there is a catch. In this length the dragons must stay close to the ground, weaving between peaks and cliffs. The dragon must be agile and alert to navigate the chasms of the Fort range.

Team Yalinu
Bronze Vorvath, Rider S'jig

S’jig sat, comfortably perched upon the great bronze back of his dragon, as he peered down the plain that they were soon to fly. He was hoping his dragon’s broad wings would make this look easy. He hadn’t quite planned on it being quite this long. Think you’re up to it old boy? Not that he and Vorvath were that old anyhow!

He felt Vorvath rumble deep in his chest and snort with contempt. Surely you jest S’jig. This will be easier than any patrol we’ve ever done. Are you sure you’ll be able to hold on during the flight? The bronze teased back. S’jig grinned and slapped the hide in front of him affectionately. “I can hold through anything you can pull.”

The signal came to get ready. Vorvath moved to his potion in line and crouched, wings raised and poised to take him quickly into the sky. They’d talked about this. Stay low to the ground or go for height and maybe calmer winds. S’jig argued that getting height would take time. They compromised; just enough height to avoid crashing into stuff so Vorvath could focus solely on flying.

The starting signal dropped and the pair were away! Vorvath quickly found a level where he was happy and drove forward with deep powerful strokes of his wings. This is what he was born to do!

Team Yalinu
Bronze Burith, Rider K'mas

Burith was tracking their partner as he made his way across the plains flight and giving a blow by blow comment to his rider. Most of it filled with dry sarcastic humor. In truth he was itching to be away and kept shifting his weight from foot to foot. His rider swayed easily with his movements.

K’mas knew from long experience his dragon was a bundle of nerves. He placed a calming hand on the whithers. “They’ll get here when they get here. They’ve never rushed before to please you have they?” He grinned as the dragon blew an exasperated breath out.

Here come the turtles! He called as Vorvath finally made his way in slowly powering over the plains. The bronze danced in place until the pass had been made. He was eager to show his speed and power in the flight up to the tallest peak. As soon as he could, he took off in a burst of power and flurry of wings. Nothing was going to hold him back! Well except maybe gravity. It could try, but it couldn’t hold him down forever!

K’mas grinned and clung on. They were in for a long climb up. It would be plenty of work and perhaps the cold at the top might cool his dragon’s head!

V’ar double checked his straps were tight and securely fastened. This would probably be a bumpy right. He knew what he was about to get into, what he wasn’t sure was how he’d gotten into it. When he’d heard of the relay race, he’d gone to find a couple of partners. V’ar had talked to several of his friends, but they’d already formed teams or weren’t entering.

Then all of a sudden a pair of bronze riders had descended upon him. They had heard he was looking for a team, and they needed a third member. He and his poor blue Reth had been swept up by the bronzes and so he was in. Now he sat waiting for K’mas and Burith to reach them. When he thought about it, it made sense why they’d pick him for this portion. A bronze might have a hard time with these turns, and blues were well known for their agility. Only a green might have been better.

He took a deep breath in the thin cold air. He could see the dragons flying toward the top. Eventually Reth picked out the bronze they were waiting for and brought his rider’s attention to them. V’ar tightened his grip on the straps. Soon soon. A pass off and they were away!

V’ar leaned close over his blue’s neck. The pair stuck even lower to the ground as they raced down the mountain side toward the finish line. They weaved and bobbed around the obstacles in their path. Reth half folded his wings as they came to a familiar cliff. It made for a gut wrenching drop, but it was fast and controlled. Reth loved these sort of maneuvers; sometimes enough to make his stomach spin. V’ar sternly told his stomach to behave and focused. There! Earthslide was in sight! The blue pair came in for a skidding landing!
