The number of flags around the rim of the Weyr had doubled. Now two orange flag fluttered in the breeze. One was placed at the Star Stones, the other on the opposite side of the Weyr. As the afternoon began to stretch on, the competitors once again gathered at Earthslide, and the Headwoman once again marched down the line to ensure they were all in position. This race would be slightly different. The competitors would have to fly in a loop around the Weyr, then another, and another, until they couldn’t fly anymore. The winner would be the dragon the flew the most complete laps. Satisfied that everyone was appropriately spaced out, the Headwoman once again raised her flag over her head, bringing it swiftly down and sending the dragons once again launching into the air.

//Come on sweetheart don't hang around!// Liarith rumbled a little impatiently, his rider was lingering to speak to a brownrider about- eh, about something what did he care? There was a competition on, and he was planning to be the best at it! There were bronzes bigger than he, quite a lot of them, but he was fit and his relative lack of bulk was perfect for long distance flight. That was what he said anyway, have you ever seen a heavily muscled runner trotting from hold to hold on their funny two legs? No? Well that was exactly his point, and he didn't bother with whether or not it made sense to extend the logic to dragons too.
D'lana shook her head, rolled her eyes, and parted from the other rider with a murmured word. "Alright, I'm coming," she said unnecessarily as she strode over to her dragon and clambered up onto his back. //No showboating now,// she said with a severe slap to his shoulder. //If we are going to win you need to save your energy.//
Liarth snorted and a whirl of brighter green ran through his eyes. //I know, I know, I'm not a hatchling D'lana. Read?//
As the headwoman walked down the rank of dragons D'lana nodded. //Ready.//
And then they were off in a great rush of dragon muscle. Liarth quickly found a comfortable position for himself in the middle of the pack, far enough from the next dragon that the beating of their wings would not interfere with his own flight. Leisurely beats of his wings carried the lean bronze forward, and two keen pairs of eyes sought out the places within the bounds of the course they knew held the best updrafts. They were not the only ones with this idea however and on several occasions Liarth had to swoop downward to avoid another dragon heading for the same juicy waft of warmer air.
//Slow and steady,// D'lana sent as the bronze left a course adjustment a little late.
//It's fine,// he replied with a snort of amusement, //I know what I'm doing, alright?//
//That's what you claim!//
